We’d had a tough few weeks. Infact, everything in my life had gotten crazy ever since I got married. We’ll, if we’re being fair, way before that. From ghost marriages, terrorist aunts, crime syndicates, house jacking and mentally ill family members, it’s a wonder I’m still alive. But here I am again, engaged. To the sexiest man in the world, with the life that should be the fairytale of my dreams. But why did I feel apprehensive? Like I was waiting for the other shoe to drop. Maybe it’s cause everything feels so unfinished, like we’re turning the page before closing the chapter. “Morning.” Levi kissed my forehead as his naked body moves under me.I looked up and there was my husband, well fiancé. Or husband. How did this even work? I should’ve asked but instead I looked up and said. “Morning Mr. Vanderbilt.”He chuckled, the smile lighting up his eyes. “Morning, Mrs. Vanderbilt.”The sound of that made my heart skip a bit. He had never called me that. Infact, I just realized nobody h

The photo was still on my desk when Levi found me.  “Any updates?” I leaned on the desk, the edges of the photo cutting into my palm, and asked, my voice rougher than I meant. His arms were stiff as he entered the study, the creases of his face marked by the day's stress. His shirt sleeves were rolled up, revealing the corded muscle of his forearms, and his tie was loosened. He still had a predator's edge that never dulled, even if it was uncommon to see him appear so unguarded. He closed the door after saying, "They're narrowing it down." “The team suspects it’s someone on the inside.”  I exhaled a bitter laugh. “Of course it is. We need to talk about how disloyal your men are. Why stop at outsiders when betrayal is so readily available in-house?”  Levi’s eyes flicked to the photo in my hand. “ just a few bad eggs, it comes with the trade. What’s that?&rdqu

High above the metropolitan skyline, the restaurant was like something out of a dream. The entire room was filled with floor-to-ceiling windows that let in a sea of sparkling lights below. Somewhere behind me, I could hear the soft hum of a string quartet, their notes drifting through the atmosphere like smoke. Even the room's fragrance was pricey; sandalwood, citrus, and a subtle floral note that I couldn't identify cost more than I'd ever want to know.“Do you always go this far when you’re trying to impress someone?” I asked, breaking the silence.  Levi smirked as he pulled out my chair. “Only when it matters.”  I detested the way his voice sounded, deep and steady, like if it were directly connected to my heartbeat. Knowing that every small concession like this was just another crack in the wall I had spent so much time constructing, I allowed him to push my chair in even though I shouldn't have.

I heard screams from those around me, and someone yelled for assistance, but it was too late. The lawyer's secrets perished with him as his lifeless eyes gazed up at the sky. My hands were still shaking when I got back to the estate. Levi was in the study waiting for me, and when he spotted me, his face darkened.“What happened?” he asked, rising from his chair.  I dropped into the seat across from him, my voice barely above a whisper. “He’s dead.”  “Who?”  “The lawyer,” I said, my throat tightening. “He was going to tell me everything, and now he’s dead.”  Levi’s jaw clenched, his eyes narrowing. “This wasn’t an accident.”  “No,” I said, my voice trembling. “It wasn’t.”  He took a position behind me and rested his hands on the back of my chair.

“Maybe I don’t care about dying.” I finally replied quietly. “Maybe I’m looking for an escape from this.”His eyes darkened, and I knew I’d crossed a line. “Careful, Eliana,” he warned.  “Why? Are you going to add that to the list of things I can’t say?” I spat.  Levi's jaw tensed, and he appeared to be about to speak for a second before simply shaking his head. "Control is not the issue here. It's a matter of survival. In case you haven't heard, these people don't follow the rules.”I responded to that by saying, "Then maybe you should have informed me that your competitors are respawning."I roll my eyes. “Respawning? What is this? A Batman novel? Under a new leader, no less. When were you planning on telling me that, Levi? Or does trust only go one way?”  His silence was answer enough.  I took a step back, m

The message sat on my phone like a slow-burning fuse:  "This is your only warning. Stop digging, or lose everything.”In the gloomy light of Levi's study, where anxiety and the stale smell of whisky permeated the air, the screen glared back at me. His security team was reporting on the aftermath of the cyberattack that had destroyed his accounts earlier that day, and the faint echo of voices could be heard somewhere down the corridor. Millions gone in minutes, siphoned through layers of anonymity so deep even his most trusted experts couldn’t untangle it.  The weight of it pressed against my chest.  Levi’s empire, my empire, they were both bleeding, and whoever was pulling the strings wasn’t just aiming for financial ruin. This was surgical, personal.  His laptop was the only source of light as he slumped over his desk when I pushed open the door to his office. His shirt sleeves we

The bullet shattered the windshield first, a quick, sharp crack that punched through the quiet like lightning splitting the air. Levi barely swerved in time, the sleek black car groaning as it veered off the highway into the shoulder. I was already ducking, heart pounding in my throat, the acrid scent of burned rubber and gasoline filling the air.  “Stay down,” Levi barked, his voice razor-edged with control.  He reached for the steering wheel as if it were the only thing holding him to the present. His dark eyes danced with the chaos outside, and I could see the muscles in his forearm tense as cables.Another round ricocheted off the hood, sparking in the night.  “Who the hell—” I started, my voice breaking.  “Not now,” he cut in.  I felt the car lurch forward, Levi slamming the accelerator hard enough to make my stomach churn. The tires screame

There was a lot of tension in Levi's private office. The walls were covered in long shadows, and the shining glass and polished wood surfaces were given a subdued glow by the low illumination. With a crisp silhouette against the setting light, Levi stood at the enormous window that overlooked the metropolitan skyline. His jaw was set, his shoulders stiff—signs I recognized as barely contained fury. “I’m going to ask this once,” Levi said, his voice quiet, dangerously calm. “And I suggest you don’t lie to me.” One of Levi's closest aides, Alan Prescott, squirmed uneasily in front of him. The beads of perspiration on his forehead caught the dim light, making his fitted suit appear ill-fitting.Alan answered, his eyes betraying him, but his voice calm, "I don't know what you're talking about, Levi."Levi slowly turned, his eyes sharp. "You have no idea what I'm discussing? That's intriguing because I mentioned your name to one of our most recent assailants right before he passed out.

The hours that followed stretched on like a nightmare from which I was unable to awaken. There was a thin layer of mutual trust between Levi and myself, a delicate understanding that could break at any time. This damn syndicate, my mother’s secrets, and the web of lies surrounding everything were suffocating me. I needed air, space, but the walls were closing in.We'd just finished going through the intel from Alan—his confession about feeding information to the syndicate was a cold slap to the face. He'd named names, places, schedules everything that had put us in danger, and more. But there was one thing Alan didn’t know, something that gnawed at the back of my mind.Levi’s betrayal was a double-edged sword. Yes, he'd been hurt, he'd been vulnerable, but he’d also shut down parts of himself that I'd relied on to make him someone I could trust. I knew it wasn’t fair to be angry about it—he was just as much a victim as I was but we were both in deep now. Our bond was forged in the fir

As if the walls themselves were closing in, the penthouse's oppressive, suffocating air served as a continual reminder of the seriousness of the situation we were in. Little solace was provided by the flashing city lights outside, which stood in stark contrast to the gloom roiling inside my head. My phone was still clutched in my hand, the cold, unforgiving screen reflecting the weight of Livia’s words. She hadn’t just threatened me; she’d cast her shadow over everything—my mother’s legacy, the syndicate, and, if I wasn’t careful, everything I had left.I was beyond scared. Fear didn’t even scratch the surface. I was sinking into something far worse, a quiet despair, where I knew knew I was running out of time.Levi, standing at the door, broke my train of thought. His presence was almost too much to bear, but it was also the only thing that kept me grounded.“Livia again?” His voice was rough, raw, but controlled. Always controlled.I glanced at him, my eyes narrowing. “Yeah, and she
