Ghosts

Kelly The first thing I noticed when I woke up was the warmth of the blanket covering me. It smelled faintly of Adrian—clean, Oud, and grounding. I sat up, rubbing the dull ache in my temple, trying to remember how I ended up here. The memories came back slowly: Adrian bringing me home, his firm hands steadying me when my legs wobbled from exhaustion and maybe just a little wine. Stretching, I got to my feet and strolled to Adrian’s room to check on him. His room door was slightly ajar, and the bed was neatly made, untouched. He wasn’t there. The kitchen was my next stop. A hangover demanded caffeine and something strong to fight off the sluggishness. But as soon as I walked in, I saw the plate sitting on the counter, carefully covered with a lid. A note peeked out underneath the plate. The messages reads: ‘I made this food for you in case you wake up and feel hungry. Make sure you eat on time’ I smiled, my cheeks warming. Adrian was always so thoughtful, even when I didn’

Jadeline?

Kelly The room felt like it had shrunk. My pulse pounded in my ears as the person standing before me was no other person than Lucian. Of all people, of all places. Laugh escaped through my lips before I could stop it, a sharp, humorless sound that echoed awkwardly in the small space. Lucian, now stood in front of me wearing a refined police uniform. Lucian as a cop? This had to be some stupid joke. "Lucian?" I managed, disbelief coating my voice. "You're a—what? A police officer now?" He smiled faintly, but there was no trace of Lucian—the psycho I used to know. His posture was straight, his face unreadable. "Kelly," he said, his tone even. "It's been a while." Under normal circumstances, I would've made a snarky comment, something about how ridiculous it was that the man who once tried to take advantage of me, was now enforcing the law. But today, I didn’t have the energy for it. "Start talking," I demanded, folding my arms across my chest. My tone was low but sharp enough.

Crazy man

Kate Kelly? I hissed. Seeing her here brought nothing but a sharp, burning anger to my chest. Kelly or was it Kendra now? The self-righteous sister who always managed to poke her nose into things that didn’t concern her had somehow found him. Our father. I had made sure to hide him away from her, I travelled all the way to Oklahoma to hide him just for Kelly to find him without even stressing a finger. Locking eyes with her again, I felt a sneer curl at the corner of my lips. I cursed under my breath and turned on my heel, walking with unwavering confidence into the building. I refused to let her presence rattle me. The lobby smelled like antiseptic, the sound of fluorescent lights above doing nothing to soothe the irritation I felt. I approached the counter, my heels clicking against the tiled floor. “I'm here to see Louis Brooks,” I asked, forcing a sweet smile. “I’m his daughter, and I’d love to see him now.” The nurse behind the counter gave me a skeptical look but n

A changed man

Lucian I used to be someone else. Someone lost. Someone who couldn’t see beyond the moment, let alone understand the consequences of his actions. It’s funny how people can change, how life can slap you awake when you least expect it. I didn’t always have this clarity. I wasn’t always the man I am now. I was just the mentally unstable Anderson’s younger brother, the one who never quite fit in. I lived in his shadow, always trying to find my place, always battling the instability inside me. I didn’t know it then, but that mental turmoil, those feeling of anxiety, anger, and despair were shaping me into a man who would eventually do things I could never take back. Back then, I was a mess. My mind was a maze I couldn’t navigate. And the more I tried to find my way, the more I got lost. I drank to numb the pain. I fought to prove something, anything. It wasn’t until I hit rock bottom that I realized I had to change. I don’t know what snapped inside me, but one day, I woke up and realiz

Talk of the devil

Kelly I was shocked to see Kate. I shouldn’t have been, though. She was family, after all. But after everything that had happened, it still hurt to see her standing there. The air between us had always been suffocating with unspoken words, and now that she was in front of me, I couldn't help but wonder if this was another one of her games. Another one of her manipulations. But then there was Lucian. That was the real shock. How had he gone from being the mess of a person I once knew, to this...healthy, refined police officer? It didn’t make sense. It was funny to think about, in a way. Lucian, the man who once made my skin crawl, was now playing the part of a man in control. How did someone like him, someone who had been so lost, so unstable—transform into someone I could almost look at with a sense of respect? It didn’t sit right with me. I couldn’t change the past in my mind, though. He was still the same person to me, even if his appearance had changed. The fear that he could st

Moving to DC

KellyI hesitated briefly before answering. I pressed the green button and held the phone to my ear.“Hey,” I said, my voice carrying a lightness I didn’t quite feel.“Kelly” Adrian replied, his tone warm but calm. “How are you holding up?”“Better, I guess,” I answered truthfully. “You?”“Busy as always,” he said with a soft chuckle. “And how is Harper?“She's fine, she already went to school” I replied, my tone soft.I wasn’t expecting much from the call until Adrian casually dropped the bombshell.“So, the D.C. hospital branch we’ve been working on is finally ready,” he said. “It means I’ll be moving to D.C. soon.”For a moment, I thought I misheard him. Moving? To D.C.? I nearly screamed with joy but caught myself just in time. I bit my lip to suppress the overwhelming happiness. Adrian’s presence in my life had been steady, almost like an anchor, and the thought of him being close to me was more than I could have hoped for.“That’s...great news,” I said, trying to sound normal, b

Kelly is my wife.

AdrianI was halfway through wrapping up the call with Kelly when my assistant knocked on the door, her voice tense. “Dr. Adrian, there’s…a situation outside.”I sighed, pinching the bridge of my nose. “Can it wait? I’m—” I said, pulling my phone away from my mouth.“It’s a celebrity,” she blurted out, her tone a mix of panic and frustration. “He’s throwing a tantrum”I raised an eyebrow. “A celebrity?” I repeated, surprised. “And this is my problem because…?”She looked visibly uncomfortable.“He’s demanding to see you. He won’t leave.”What the hell gives him the right.Hanging up the phone, I stormed out of my office, anger building with every step. I wasn’t in the mood to babysit someone’s ego, celebrity or not. I pushed open the doors to the lobby, ready to put whoever it was in their place, only to stop dead in my tracks.Anderson.Of all people, it had to be him.My blood boiled instantly. He stood there, with his usual arrogance, acting as though he owned the place. My fists

She belongs to me

Anderson Kelly is his wife? Since when? The thought rattled around in my brain, refusing to settle. It couldn’t be true. Adrian had to be lying. I gripped the steering wheel tighter as I drove, my breath short. The words replayed in my head like a broken record, each repetition hitting harder than the last. Kelly… married to Adrian? How did something so huge pass me by? There was no way. No damn way. Kelly and I might not be together anymore, but I knew her better than anyone. Or at least, I thought I did. The idea that she could marry Adrian and keep it hidden didn’t make sense. Unless... I shook my head, rejecting the thought. Adrian was lying trying to scare me off. That’s all it was. He wanted me to back off, to second-guess my place in Kelly’s life. It had to be some planned bluff. But even as I clung to that explanation, doubt lingered on my mind. If there was any truth to what Adrian said, why wasn’t their marriage public? Why would Kelly, someone so fiercely independe

Ex-boyfriend is back

KatePicking up Aiden from school today had to be the worst thing I’d done in weeks. I hated to admit how similar Kelly and Aiden had almost the same annoying character. That boy was the definition of stubborn. I’d told him, no, I actually begged him to take a taxi or bus home just for today, but of course, he refused. Instead, he threatened to tell Anderson if I didn’t come get him. What kind of twelve-year-old blackmailed adults?Maybe keeping Aiden was a mistake. It was all Evelyn's stupid suggestions. As I pulled up outside his school, he slid into the back seat, sulking. Would a day pass without him sulking? Probably not. He was growing into a fine young man, but with all that brooding, he still acted like a five-year-old.I adjusted the rearview mirror and glanced at him. His dark hair and sharp jawline were unmistakably his father’s, but the colour in his eyes, is the same as his mother always sends a wave of irritation through me.I tightened my grip on the steering wheel. As

Are you insane?

KateThe driver of the car stormed toward me, his face evident with anger. He motioned for me to roll down my window, but I sat still, ignoring him.“Hey! Get out of the car!” he yelled, slapping the hood.My jaw tightened. Who did this guy think he was? His car wasn't that hit, and it wasn’t like I rammed into him on purpose. I stared ahead, pretending he wasn’t there. But when he slammed his palm against my car again, it was as though he dared me to respond. That’s it.I opened the door with more force than necessary and stepped out, my heels clicking against the pavement. My eyes immediately darted to the front of my car. The damage was minimal, just a cracked front light. Nothing near where he’d hit it earlier.“Are you insane?” I snapped, turning to face him. He was tall, with broad shoulders and an attitude that matched his size. “Do you think hitting someone’s car helps?”He crossed his arms, his eyes deepening. “Your car hit mine, lady. Maybe if you’d been paying attention in
