CHAPTER ONE

MAXINE I woke up to the soft glow of my bedroom's ambient lighting, feeling a mix of excitement and nerves. As I gaze around the room, I'm surrounded by a kaleidoscope of colors . The walls, floor, and ceiling blend seamlessly into a continuous, curved surface, creating an immersive environment The walls, adorned with holographic displays that shift and change as I watch, showcasing vibrant patterns, news feeds, and personalized messages. The floor made of a gleaming, silver-gray material that seems almost liquid in its reflectivity. Subtle, color-shifting tiles create a mesmerizing mosaic, responding to my every step.Above me, the ceiling dissolves into a stunning, high-definition sky simulation, complete with drifting clouds, shining stars, and a warm, golden light that mimics the sun's gentle touch. A holographic display flickers to life before me, responding to my voice and gestures. Soft, melodic chimes announce incoming messages and updates. As I breathe in the room's sterile,

MAXINE I slowly opened my eyes, grogginess lifting like a veil. But instead of the sterile white room, I found myself standing in a dense forest. Sunlight filtered through the canopy above, casting dappled shadows on the forest floor.Confusion gave way to panic as I heard the distant hum of hoverbikes and the shout of Synod Agents. "Target acquired! Maxine Wilson, surrender!"My heart racing, I took off in a sprint, dodging low-hanging branches and leaping over roots. The agents closed in, their boots pounding the earth behind me."Stop, Maxine! You're under arrest!"I darted between trees, desperate to escape. Bullets whizzed past my ears, sending shivers down my spine.Suddenly, a chasm yawned before me – a deep, wide, and dark hole. CHAPTER THREE

MAXINE I stepped out of the sleek, silver elevator and onto the sprawling campus of Eldridge University. The cityscape of New Eden stretched out before me, a tapestry of towering skyscrapers and holographic advertisements. As an NX-ZERO, I'd grown accustomed to the hum of advanced technology that permeated every aspect of life here while not being able to add anything new or have a major impact on whatever life we have built here after the great explosion.Eldridge University's main building, the Aurora Tower, shimmered with a lattice-like facade that seemed to shift and adapt to the changing light. I joined the flow of students streaming into the building, our footsteps echoing off the polished marble floors. My first class of the day was Cognitive Psychology. I slipped into the lecture hall, a circular room with holographic projectors and neural interface ports. The professor's voice greeted me, her words displayed on the augmented reality contact lenses I wore."Good morning, clas

CHAPTER FOUR

NIKLAUS I stood alongside my mother, McKenna, leader of Vortex, in the heart of our underground headquarters. The soft hum of holographic displays and whispers of fellow rebels filled the air as she stood in front of the few hundreds we have been able to rescue and the ones who have been here with us."Friends, we gather at a critical juncture," McKenna began, surveying the room. "New Eden's descent into tyranny accelerates under Arlo's rule."As leader of Phoenix-5, Vortex's governing body, McKenna's words carried weight. Her eyes locked onto mine, and I saw a mix of concern and determination."Synod's agents roam unchecked, hunting down NX-5's, our kind" she continued. "Arlo's propaganda machine fuels fear and hatred. Our sources indicate a new, top-secret facility is under construction.""What's its purpose?" Zara, a skilled hacker, asked.McKenna's expression darkened. "We suspect it's designed to harness NX-5 energy. Arlo wants to exploit these individuals for his own gain."I c

CHAPTER FIVE

HENRYWe just finished a mission where we lost an incel, Ian Satur whom was of great use to Synod we never really knew what happened underground and we could only hope to get promoted to know what it was. This time seemed different though, our supervisor had ordered a call for my team and I and it was odd, we never got two jobs in one night. I stood at attention, flanked by my team of Synod Agents, as our superior, Commander Pierce, briefed us on our next mission."Agents, we've received a report of a 21-year-old female exhibiting NX-5 characteristics," Commander Pierce announced, her eyes scanning the room.I felt a thrill of adrenaline, ready to take on the challenge."That's impossible," I thought to myself. "NX-5s manifest before 18."Commander Pierce continued, "Eyesphere surveillance captured her anomalies. Your mission is to apprehend and contain."She handed me a tablet with the target's file as the captain of my team. My heart sank as I saw the image.Max.My sister.I felt

CHAPTER SIX

MCKENNA The door slides open as a fellow Phoenix-5 member walked in with case file folders in his hand. He carefully places them on the desk as he opens it with a holographic display of a young female springing out from the file illuminating the room in blue. I stared at the classified report on my desk, trying to figure out what her situation was."NX-5 Sighting: Unknown Female, Late Teens, Exhibiting Advanced Abilities," Reginald said as he went to take a seat turning to the remaining 4 of us. NX-5s, individuals with extraordinary powers, were born with their abilities. They manifested before age 18, never after. This report defied everything we knew."Are you certain she just exhibited powers?" Gabriella, another member asked."Nope, judging from the photo, she doesn't even know what is happening to her, she looks scared, and all over the place. I am certain she is just showing," Reginald replied, adjusting his seat."McKenna do you have any idea why? I mean this is impossible,"

CHAPTER SEVEN

MAXINE We arrived at Shane's safe house, a sleek, high-tech haven. Exhaustion, fear, terror and some other feelings I couldn't figure out claimed me. As I step into the safe house, I'm immediately enveloped in a sense of security and tranquility. The exterior of the building is nondescript, but once inside, I'm surrounded by cutting-edge technology and innovative design. The first thing I notice is the advanced biometric scanner that verifies his identity and grants us access to the facility. The scanner uses a combination of facial recognition, fingerprint analysis, and retinal scanning to ensure that only authorized personnel can enter. Once we cleared, the doors slide open, revealing a spacious, minimalist interior. The walls are adorned with holographic displays that provide real-time updates on the surrounding environment, including surveillance feeds, weather reports, and threat assessments. The air is crisp and clean, thanks to the advanced air filtration system, which c

CHAPTER EIGHT

MAXINE I felt a surge of fear as I was dragged away from Shane, the Synod Agents' grip on my arms like a vice. I struggled against them, but they were too strong. As I was led deeper into the Synod underground facility, I caught glimpses of the horrors that lay within. The air was thick with the scent of disinfectant and something else... something acrid and burning. We passed by rooms filled with rows of beds, each one occupied by an NX-5 like me. Some were strapped down, their bodies contorted in agony as they underwent painful tests. Others lay motionless, their eyes vacant and unresponsive. I heard the muffled screams and cries for help coming from behind closed doors. My heart racing, I struggled against the agents holding me, but they were too strong. We eventually arrived at a door with a small window. The agent holding me gestured for me to look inside. I hesitated, but my curiosity got the better of me. I peered through the window, and my blood ran cold. Inside the room

CHAPTER NINE

ARLO I sat behind my desk, sipping my coffee as I reviewed the day's schedule. It was a lovely day indeed, a rare day when everything went according to my plan. My secretary, Juliet, knocked on the door, interrupting my thoughts of pure triumph. "Sir, Henry Wilson and Shane Parrish have arrived," she said. I nodded, setting my coffee down. "Send them in." A moment later, the two agents walked into my office, their expressions guarded with Henry's of strength and ambition and Shane of skeptics. "Ah, gentlemen," I said, standing up to greet them, offering a handshake and taking Parrish unaware. "Thank you for bringing Max in. I know it can't have been easy. She has been a person of personal value to both of you who grew up with her, one as a sister and the other as a friend." Henry and Shane exchanged a glance, their faces unreadable. "I want to assure you that what we're doing here is for the greater good," I continued. "And I think you two have the potential to be a part of some

CHAPTER TEN

HENRY I finally went home after I haven't seen my parents since the entire ordeal with Max and I. I knew a lot was going to happen as soon as I step into the house and I wasn't wrong. I walked through the front door, exhausted from the past three days. I hadn't been home since I'd brought my sister to Synod, and I knew my parents were going to be furious. As soon as I stepped into the living room, my mom launched herself at me, her face red with anger. "How could you do this to us, Henry?" she screamed. "You've destroyed our family!" I didn't want to engage so I stepped away from them "I don't want to argue, at least not today" I said trying to make my way up the stairs Mom wasn't having any of that as she did not stop "I knew you had always been ambitious, but going after your own sister was the last straw! You are not the son we raised" She continued as dad chimed in "Maxine is your little sister, it is your duty to protect her, but you led the people who took her into custod
