Chapter 31 Hearing his name always makes her nauseous

Lucas paced down the hospital hallway, flicking a cigarette to life. The brief hit of nicotine helped, but it was just a distraction. After a few drags, he stubbed it out, taking a deep breath. Ella hated the smell of smoke, and somehow, even now, he still cared. She’d told him once, early on in their marriage, that the smell bothered her. Since then, he’d done his best to quit, even during the most high-pressure times at work. But he’d picked up the habit again after she “left.” Those nights of sleeplessness, combined with long, grueling work hours, had driven him back to it, as if the smoke could somehow ease the emptiness she left behind. Now, as he headed back to the ward, a strange feeling crept over him. He was almost at the door when he heard voices inside. “Are you hungry?” came a familiar voice. “I brought you some oatmeal porridge. Drink it, and then I’ll take you home.” Lucas's eyes narrowed. That’s Leo Quinn. How did Leo find her? Besides himself, only Kai a

Chapter 32 Lucas must have want to poison her!

As Ella walked down the hallway, she paused suddenly, something sparking in her memory. She spun around to face Leo. "Oh, hey, Leo, I just remembered something weird." Leo looked up, surprised by her sudden halt. "What's up?" "Do you know Lucas? I just heard him call you 'Mr. Quinn.' But… didn't you say you were an only child?" Leo's eyes narrowed slightly. He always knew Ella was sharp, but he hadn't expected her to catch such a small detail, especially with everything going on. For a second, Leo considered dodging the question, but he realized it was probably time to be honest with her. After all, if Lucas had figured out who he was, then it was only a matter of time before Ella found out, too. "Ella," he began, his voice low and sincere. "I've actually wanted to tell you this for a while… but I never quite knew how." She cocked her head to the side, her curious gaze glued to him. "Tell me what?" He exhaled slowly. "I only found out about it six years ago." Ella's eyebrow

Chapter 33 Maplewood

Ella thought about the breakfast delivery for a moment, her mind racing with possibilities. "Could it be from the neighborhood association? Like, some kind of 'morning kindness' program?" Lila's Mom, let out a hearty laugh, shaking her head. "Oh, please, Lila! No, it was from your coworker." "Coworker?" Ella frowned, her suspicion growing. She had only been back in the country for less than two weeks, and her closest colleague was her boss, Matt. But Matt had no idea that she was sick, so how could he have sent her breakfast? Could it be someone pretending to be her colleague and trying to poison her? It wasn't that Ella was being paranoid, but she had actually experienced something similar when she was in Westvale. Because she had exposed too many high-level secrets, she was seen as a thorn in the eyes of those in power and was secretly poisoned several times. Fortunately, she was vigilant and lucky enough to survive, or she wouldn't know how many times she would have died.

Chapter 34 Paternity test

As the door opened, Jenna pulled down her mask and extended her hand with a friendly grin, “Hello, I'm Jenna.” Kate eyes widened, her pupils dilating in sheer surprise. She blinked twice, and just as the reality hit, she squealed. “Oh my gosh! It’s really you! Jenna Stone, I’m your—” “Shh!” Jenna quickly raised a finger to her lips, giving Kate a conspiratorial wink. “I know, I know, you’re a fan. I’ll totally give you an autograph later, maybe even a selfie. But right now, can we focus on the house?” Kate, still visibly starstruck, nodded enthusiastically, her cheeks turning the faintest shade of pink. Jenna's grin widened. "Great! Now, lead the way, Kate. My friend and I can’t wait to check this place out.” As Kate guided them inside, Jenna gave a playful nudge to her Ella. “Told you I got this covered,” she whispered, winking. Ella, however, was too busy staring around the luxurious hallway to notice. The apartment Kate showed them was a chic duplex on the third floor. The b

Chapter 35 This child is truly Lucas offspring

Aaron Yes, it was the young male doctor standing in front of Kai, who raised his eyebrows slightly and showed a hint of surprise in his eyes. He now truly believed that this little thing in front of him was Lucas's offspring. Just looking at the cool and arrogant attitude, it was almost identical to Lucas's. "So… you want this or not?" Kai asked, holding out a sample bag, his voice chilly. "If you don’t, I’ll toss it." The Aaron chuckled, genuinely surprised at Kai's sharp tone. He couldn’t help but think, This kid's a mini version of Lucas. The attitude, the unbothered confidence—it was uncanny. But as he watched Kai, he noticed something else. There was a faint resemblance, a little spark of familiarity that made him think back to Lucas's younger days. "Wow, kid," he muttered, "you really are a chip off the old block." Kau didn’t appreciate the doctor’s gaze lingering on him, especially since it felt off, too intense. It wasn’t about the exam; he was almost sure now—this d

Chapter 36 Paternity test gone wrong

A minute later, the door creaked open. Zane stepped in, his face full of curiosity. "Mr. Lucas, did you call for me?" Lucas glanced up from his desk, his eyes sharp and unreadable. He gestured for Zane to come closer. Without hesitation, Zane moved forward, but the moment his eyes landed on Lucas's’s hand, he froze. “Mr. Lucas, your hand... it’s bleeding.” Lucas flicked his wrist dismissively, as though it was nothing. "It’s fine," he said, his voice low and controlled. "But put that aside for now. I need you to investigate something." Zane, used to Lucas's’s usual aloofness, immediately straightened up, his mind racing. If Lucas was asking him to drop everything, it must be important. His voice dropped an octave. “What do you want me to look into?” Lucas leaned back in his chair, his gaze distant. “I want you to investigate the fire at the Blake Pharmaceuticals factory six years ago.” Zane blinked, his heart skipping a beat. “You mean the fire that destroyed the whole lab? Chapter 37 The children were in trouble

Ella picked up her two children from the kindergarten. Before leaving for Westvale, she had bought a second-hand scooter. After the two children got on the scooter, she casually asked, "What did you learn in kindergarten today, Kai and Kaia?"Kaia, the more talkative one, immediately jumped in, barely taking a breath. "We learned a lot today!" She could practically hear her excitement spilling over the helmet as she continued. "Teacher Tina taught us addition within 20. Actually, I already knew it, but my brother still wanted me to listen carefully!"Ella stole a glance at her son, Kai, whose face was as calm as ever, the faintest hint of a smile tugging at his lips. He was always so composed, so intelligent beyond his years. She couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride swell in her chest."Hmm, your brother is right," she said, focusing on the road ahead. "Did you listen carefully, Kaia?""Of course! Kaia always listens to her brother!" The little girl puffed out her chest with pride

Chapter 38 Isn't Lucas about to Marry Amy?

"Did Kai forget to mention it?" Ella muttered to herself, staring at her phone in disbelief. It was hard to believe that such an important detail had been overlooked, but somehow, she could almost understand how it happened. For someone as sharp as Kai, though, this felt... off. Something didn’t sit right. "Ella, are you there?" Leo’s voice on the other end of the phone snapped her out of her thoughts. "Ah, Leo, what did you just say? I didn’t hear you clearly because of the signal," Ella quickly replied, trying to refocus. "It’s fine," Leo said, a smile in his voice. "I’ll repeat it. I suspected Lucas would have Aaron help with this investigation. Even though Apex Hospital is a private institution, Aaron’s colleague, Lane, is my senior. I helped him a bit when he was overseas." ELLA’s heart skipped a beat. "So, what’s going on? What did they find?" "Aaron used the pretense of a routine physical examination to perform paternity tests for the two children," Leo continued, his

Chapter 39 Lucas was pulling her closer

The more Matt thought about it, the more he regretted everything. If only he hadn’t asked Lucas to let Ella take that flight the day he returned to Fairfield, none of this mess would have happened. No awkward encounters, no lingering drama. But then again, if Ella hadn’t been on Lucas plane, she might still be stranded in Westvale, and who knows what could’ve happened to her. Life’s full of twists, isn’t it? And so, after a sleepless night, Ella made her choice. “Matt, I’ll take the job at Lucas's company.” Her voice was steady, though a bit drained. Matt looked at her, almost hurt. He assumed she was doing it out of pity or to spare him from feeling responsible. His heart ached at the thought, but he just patted her shoulder awkwardly. “If that guy Lucas gives you any trouble, just let me know. I’ve got a few lawyer buddies up my sleeve.” He gave her a wink, trying to sound casual. Ella couldn't help sighing in her heart after hearing this. If Lucas really wanted t

Chapter 40 She was concerned

When Amy walked into the office, she was already bubbling with anger. Seeing Matt standing there, calm and collected, only made things worse. “People say that Mr. Matt here has a thing for protecting his subordinates, and it’s nice to finally see it in action. I just wonder what Mrs. Matt would say about her husband defending a woman so fiercely.” Her words were as sharp as a blade. Matt merely chuckled, crossing his arms as he leaned back against his desk. “Miss Amy, you’re getting all worked up over nothing. For the record, my wife and I split nearly ten years ago. Even if she knew about this, she wouldn’t bat an eyelash.” Amy’s eyes narrowed as she processed this. “So, you’re divorced?” She paused, eyeing him. “Come to think of it, Lila is also divorced…with kids. I suppose it makes sense. You two seem…compatible.” Her words dripped with sarcasm, but there was a bite to them, as if she was almost daring him to defend Lila. “Miss Amy,” Matt said, his voice low but firm,
