Chapter 40

A few days later . . . Hector had gone to the liquor store that afternoon and bought a three-hundred-and fifty-dollar bottle of Balvenie – scotch. His plan had been to relax for the evening, drinking a top shelf liquor while watching some old black and white movies. His plan had proved to be a mistake. Watching old movies in his motel room like Casablanca and Citizen Kane made him think of Caitlin. They had always watched old movies together. The damn scotch itself made him think of Caitlin, too. He had just remembered Balvenie was the scotch Caitlin had gifted him on his birthday. The memory of finding the woman he loved in bed with his first pride and joy, his first born, made Hector squeeze his eyes shut as hard as he could. To no avail. The image was still there – Alexander on top of her. Them being naked as their bodies grazed against each other. Hector cried out as he hurled the almost empty glass of scotch at the wall.

Chapter 41

Hector took a quick sip of his scotch. “It all started when a friend of my late wife’s had arranged a little dinner date between me and one of her many daughters.” Agatha’s brows creased. “Okay.” “She . . . young Caitlin was – is I mean in her early thirties. I was sixty-nine at the time.” Agatha said nothing and her face gave nothing away. “Despite the nearly forty-year age difference, we had really hit it off. So, we had started platonically seeing each other on the regular. After a few months, we had really become an item. We had been seeing each other for a year when I had proposed.” Agatha’s brows rose but she still said nothing. “Caitlin had planned a summer trip to Florida and while there she was going to renovate a house she had procured. She had been surprised by my proposal but had asked me for time to think about it while she was in Florida – Key West to be exact.” “Okay. Did she

Six and a half weeks later . . . It was Christmas time in the Big Apple. Garland, lights, Christmas trees, wreaths, and snow decorated the city streets, businesses, and homes. Love also filled the air. Every time Caitlin turned around Derek and Chelsea was kissing under every piece of mistletoe they could find. Cameron and Catherine were always being discovered whispering sweet nothings to each other in private corners at Christmas parties. And Alexander and Caitlin were two star-crossed lovers who didn’t give a damn what anyone thought of them being together. Word had gotten out weeks ago in the society pages and among the social scene that Caitlin had left Hector for his very own son. They knew it was going to get out eventually, but they were not prepared for the press being so aggressive. Her father had to keep the gates closed at the estate and bump up security because photographers and reporters kept trying to sneak onto the estate

Chapter 43

It was almost six p.m. as Caitlin walked the dock in a royal blue turtleneck dress with blue feather’s hanging from the end of the sleeves. The hem came above her knees. She was barely five months pregnant so she still had a little bit of a figure. She had even worn the light gold colored heels Alexander had included in the box. They were about three inches high. Her hair was hot curled in large stiff curls. Alexander had told her he liked it like that several times during the past eight weeks. The family limo driver was walking with her. It was still early but the sun had set so fast. He didn’t want to leave her unaccompanied in the dark. They got to dock G and Caitlin was pleasantly surprised. Alexander was standing on his – and A.J.’s forty-five square foot yacht. “How in the world did you get the yacht here from Florida?” Caitlin asked. “The old-fashioned way. I hired a professional captain and crew to sail it here,” he s

Chapter 44

A few days later . . . It was Christmas Eve, but you wouldn’t know it in the Beaumont household. Julian and Cassandra hadn’t felt like celebrating tonight with their friends and family who were hosting parties and informal get-togethers. Of course, the staff had decorated the townhouse, but it wasn’t the same without their father’s larger than life presence. Julian wasn’t sure but he believed the household staff was a little depressed that his father hadn’t been home in over two months. Cassandra sighed for the tenth time. “Sister,” Julian began as he propped his feet on the desk. They were lounging in study. “You’re starting to depress me with your hopeless sounding sighing.” “Aren’t you already depressed?” Cassandra said as she turned to look at him. She was laying down on the sofa. “Even when Mother died we didn’t have a depressing Christmas like this.” “I know, but it’s going to be what we make it. Put somethi

Chapter 45

It was a few minutes after ten when Julian arrived at Hilltop House, Derek and Chelsea Dawson’s home. It appeared the party was still in full swing. Of course, Cassandra had opted out of going with him because Alexander and Caitlin were going to be there. Going out tonight with his father had put Julian in the Christmas spirit. So, he had decided to grace the Dawsons’ Christmas party with his presence. Derek led Julian to the living room. “We have a bar set up in the dining area. The dining table has refreshments and snacks. Help yourself. Our party is a little looser than what you’re probably used to. We didn’t hire a serving staff or bartender.” “That’s fine,” Julian said as he looked around at the decorations. The space was an open floor, plan leaving the dining room open to the living room. The kitchen was tucked away behind a wall. The living room furniture itself was white and pristine. There were throw pillows of various colors on

Chapter 46

February . . . It was one week before Alexander’s and Caitlin’s wedding. Since the event was on such short notice, only a few Van Dykes who lived out of state could attend. Alexander didn’t want to wait any long. Caitlin was six months pregnant now and Alexander wanted to get married before the baby was born. Plus, he was in a rush to make Caitlin his wife – officially. She had a feeling that Alexander wouldn’t want to wait too long because of the pregnancy. She was fine with it and for some reason she no longer cared if she looked a little preggers, as Chelsea would say, in the wedding photos. Luckily, her mother knew a seamstress who did fantastic work and in a hurry. She was a bit expensive even for Van Dyke standards but considering how Caitlin’s dress had turn out the woman was worth it. Now, Caitlin was about to do something that she didn’t think she had the guts to do. Show up at the Beaumont townhouse. The

Chapter 47

The day before the wedding . . . Hector Beaumont walked into his townhouse for the first time since Christmas Eve. He sported a steel blue V-neck wool sweater. He had a light blue dress shirt underneath. The collar showed up top. He had on a pair of dark beige khaki pants and brown dress shoes. They weren’t his regular Italians he sported just dress shoes he got from Target. “Hello? Cassandra? Julian?” No answer. Hector wandered into the living room. No one was there. He figured while he was walking around the place he may as well fix himself a drink to warm up. There was a minibar in almost every room in the townhouse except the bedrooms. Hector poured himself a thumb of scotch – no ice. Then he slowly walked around the room. Nothing had changed concerning décor. But he did notice two envelopes on the table. They were both addressed to The Beaumont Household. The letters were in calligraphy.

Chapter 48

It was about nine-thirty when Julian and Alexander had gotten back to Julian’s condo. Of course, Alexander had been staying there since the blow up. Eighty-percent of the time, Alexander had the condo to himself. Julian rarely stayed there. They had played a few sets of hard racquetball. He had no idea that Julian had improved so much. He had run Alexander ragged. They both had won two sets. Julian had said that they would break the tie after Alexander’s honeymoon. He hadn’t argued. He was tired but he didn’t want to admit that to Julian. His baby brother hadn’t been breathing hard at all – not like Alexander. Both of them had taken a quick shower and changed at the club. Alexander wore a deep gray long-sleeved thermal shirt, blue jeans, and tennis shoes. His black hair was still a little damp from taking a shower. “Hey, Alex, can you use your key?” Julian asked as he was digging around his pockets. “I can’t seem to locate mine at the mo

Chapter 49

After a few lap dances, including one Alexander shouldn’t have had by the busty brunette, the strippers left and they did, too. Julian had rented a limo since Cassandra had the family limo. They went bar hopping. Alexander had tried to refuse but half-drunk men and peer pressure was a hell of a drug. “Two hours. That’s it,” Alexander said adamantly. So, they bar hopped around Soho. At the second bar they hit, the guys decided they wanted Alexander to play a game. It was a bachelor’s game Derek knew of. It didn’t really have a name but the rules were simple enough. Alexander had to go around the room chatting up various women, trying to get there phone number. At each one he failed at, he had to take a shot. Alexander was reluctant at first but Derek clarified something for him. “You don’t have to call them the next day. You are getting married. It’s just for fun. And girls know it’s a long shot for a man to call t
