Chapter 81: Retracing Steps

The weeks rolled by. For Luna, they were confusing weeks. She watched helplessly as the distance between her and Jasper grew. To her, it felt like Jasper was avoiding her. This was bewildering to her. She couldn't remember them having any fights or even minor altercations. One moment Jasper was sweet and open, and the next moment, he was closed off and distant. She thought that they were making solid progress, but the regression was a testament to the fact that something was wrong. Jasper was like a drone. He was emotionally detached from everything and everyone around him. The only thing that seemed to occupy his mind was his business. He immersed himself fully into his company's affairs. His subordinates felt the heat. They noticed the change in his demeanor. It was not news that Jasper was an overachiever, evidently, that was how he got rich. However, his new approach to work was backbreaking. Evans and Harriet could not decipher what caused the significant change in their boss .

Chapter 82: The Prelude

Luna watched as Jasper lifted his phone to his right ear. There was a mysterious look on his face. She tried to predict what he was thinking at that moment, but she couldn't. There was an uncomfortable silence which was broken by the occasional hums given by Jasper in response. Luna had an uncomfortable feeling about Victoria. According to Jasper, Victoria was just a business associate. However, Luna knew that there was more to it. She had done a thorough internet check on Victoria and what she discovered did very little to allay her doubts. Victoria was a beautiful and successful lady, whose charm was undeniable. It hurt her to know that there was another lady; a more sophisticated lady. Luna felt inadequate. The feeling of happiness she had felt prior began to dissipate. The waiter walked to their table with their orders. Luna gestured to the waiter to set the dishes on the table. The waiter did as he was instructed and walked away. With a loud sigh, Jasper clicked his phone off an

Chapter 83: Melting Point

Luna watched as Jasper hurried out of the restaurant. She was worried. She felt overwhelmed; with Jasper's profession of love and his sudden departure, she was out of sorts. She walked out of the restaurant into the sunset, breathed the cool air and scanned the surroundings. The streets were littered with people, walking and talking. Some joggers were seen, trying to get their cardiovascular counts in the evening. Daytime vendors were packing up and locking their stores for the day while nighttime vendors were getting ready for the start of their own business day. “Excuse me.” A voice called out from Luna's side. She gasped as she stepped out of the way. It was a jogger signaling for her to clear the path. She sighed and crossed the road. She stuck to the curb as she slowly strolled along. For some reason, she felt peaceful —more peaceful than she had ever been for the past weeks. She pulled out her phone from her purse and tried to navigate her way home using the Maps application o

Chapter 84: Coma

“Make way!” The paramedics screamed as they rushed Jasper out of the ambulance on a stretcher. The hallway was packed with patients and medical personnels who were jumping to the side as the paramedic signaled for a nurse’s attention. A wheeler was pushed towards the paramedics and they transferred Jasper's mangled body from the stretcher to the wheeler. “The patient has lost a lot of blood. We managed to stem the bleeding and administer first aid.” One of the paramedics highlighted. By then, a group of nurses had converged around the wheeler. The nurses nodded as they received the trauma reports from the paramedic. “We believe that he has some internal injuries too. There are visible swellings around his temples and chest areas.” The paramedic quickly blurted out.The nurses nodded hastily as they took over control of the wheeler from the paramedics. “Get him to the operating room now!” A surgeon barked. The surgeon was rushing towards the wheeler, a stethoscope flailing around h

Chapter 85: Informing The Family

The phone rang twice before Sophia answered. “Hello?” Sophia said cautiously. It was evident that she hadn't saved Evans’number on her phone. “Mrs. Mason. It's Evans. I work in your son's company. We had met a couple of times at company dinners and parties.“Ummm..Okay. I think I remember you. If my memory serves, you are his Chief Operations Manager. Am I correct?” Sophia asked cautiously.“Yes Mrs. Mason. You are correct.” Evans admitted. “Okay. Evans. What's wrong? Why are you calling me?” Sophia blurted out. It seemed like she was in a rush. Evans swallowed, his throat tightening. “It’s Jasper. He was involved in an accident. He—he’s in the ICU. He had surgery, and he’s in a coma.” Evans tried to steady his nerves. A sharp intake of breath. Then, silence.“Mrs. Mason?” Evans asked, worried by her silence. Her voice, when it returned, was fractured. “A coma?”Evans shut his eyes. “Yes. It is unknown how long the coma will last.”Sophia exhaled shakily. “Why didn’t the hospital

Chapter 86: Recipe For Disaster

Evans hesitated, then took a deep breath. “Mrs. Mason, it’s Evans. I don't know if you remember me, but we've met once at the company.”There was a pause. “Yes. I remember you, Mr. Evans. Is my husband with you? It's been hours and no form of communication from him. I didn't want to disturb him with calls because I assumed that he was in a meeting— an emergency meeting. Is everything okay?”Evans closed his eyes, gripping the phone tighter. “No. Jasper…” Evans tapered out. Silence. Then Luna's sharp intake of breath. “What about Jasper?”“He—he was in an accident.” The words felt like shards of glass in Evans’ throat. “He’s in the ICU.”A strangled gasp came from the other end. “What?” Luna’s voice wavered, as though the ground beneath her had crumbled. “No, Evans. No.”“He had surgery. But…he’s in a coma.”A sob broke through. “No, no, no. He was fine. He was fine. We went to the beach, we saw a movie and we ate at a restaurant. We talked. He—he said he’d be home after the meeting,

Chapter 87: No Holds Barred

“What are you doing here?” Sophia's voice was laced with venom. She stared at Luna with hatred in her eyes. Luna shrunk from the deathly stare. She stood still, her fingers pinching the fabric of her pants. She was tired, she had barely slept, barely eaten and was constantly worrying about Jasper since she heard about his accident. But none of those mattered. Not when her husband was laying on the hospital bed, lifeless, tubes crisscrossing and running through his nostrils, mouth and arms. She needed to be strong for Jasper. If confronting his mother was the necessary step to take in order to be closer to her ailing husband, then it was a risk that she had to take. Evans cleared his throat and this made Luna jump in fright. She looked towards the corner of the room where Evans was standing. She hadn't noticed him when she walked into the room. Evans gave her a brief nod in greeting. “Mrs. Mason,” Evans was referring to Jasper's mother. “Please let's be civil. Jasper needs all the s

Chapter 88: Fire On The Mountain

Evans honked the horn at a vehicle which was crawling in front of his. Irritation and frustration washed over him. He could still hear Harriet's voice through the airpods fixed to his ears. “Evans, is everything okay over there?” Harriet asked, concern lacing her voice. Evans swore under his breath. “Yes. Everything is fine. I was just frustrated at an inexperienced driver who was driving at a snail’s pace, despite the free expanse of road ahead.” Evans tried to calm his breaths. “You need to calm down, Evans. Please.” Harriet implored. “Yeah. I'm sorry. You said there was fire on the mountain. What was that about?” Evans asked cautiously, even though he had an inkling as to what was going on. “Like I said, I informed the investors about Jasper's accident. I tried to be as honest as possible without tipping them off about the severity of his comatose state. Nevertheless, you know how cutthroat the business world is. Fear, uncertainty and doubt are ruthless factors that can ruin a

Chapter 90: Two Against One

When Luna arrived at the hospital, the tension in the air was suffocating. As she approached Jasper’s room, she noticed a crowd of nurses and doctors rushing in and out. Her stomach twisted. Then she saw her.Sophia was pacing outside the room, her arms crossed, her expression tense. There was an elegantly dressed woman who was standing beside her. Luna stopped in her tracks. A cold shiver ran down her spine. She wanted to ask what was wrong, but her feet wouldn’t move. Instead, she turned to a passing nurse. “Excuse me. I'm Mr. Mason's wife… what’s happening?” The nurse paused, her expression sympathetic. “Mr. Mason's condition worsened. The swelling in his brain stem became critical. The doctors had to rush him back into surgery.” Luna’s breath hitched. “No…” she whispered, her fingers trembling. The nurse placed a hand on her arm. “They’re doing everything they can.” Luna barely heard her. The words echoed in her mind like a cruel refrain— back into surgery, brain st
