Chapter 21

Giovanni POV: I had fallen asleep thinking for most of the night that it was a dream, the most pleasant dream I’d ever had. After a day of driving around the city searching all over for her, trying to figure out where she would go. I had run myself ragged trying to find her, killing myself for being so cold towards her and keeping her under lock and key. I just didn’t think she’d stay away from the office, and if she went out she might feel scorned enough to seek out her sister. I didn’t think she’d go to her father but I did know he was conniving enough to find her quickly. I had come home and Luca poured me a drink telling me that she would be alright, he felt responsible for not realizing something was wrong sooner. We drowned our concerns and rank away most of my good whiskey, I had stumbled up the stairs to my bed at some point and I could have sworn she had been waiting for me. As I had woken up I remembered the wave of relief, but it was soured by the drunken sleep fog that c

Chapter 22

Arianna POV: “What were you doing that night?” I started. It wouldn’t be comfortable, but I wanted to know what he was doing. He insisted he was just as bad as my father but everything I had seen so far was to the contrary. “I was getting information out of a man we had captured. He was one of the ones who’d gone to your house,” He responded quickly I saw in his face the blankness of defeat to tell the truth. I felt like I was prying, but at the same time, I felt entitled to know. I swallowed, “Did you get information from him?” “Yes,” “How,” “I stabbed him and popped his shoulder out its socket. He’d been beaten all day,” He told me I saw the twitch in his jaw and how he didn’t look me in the eyes. “What did he tell you?” “Where a shipment of heroin was,” He explained “Where is it going?’ “I’ve tipped off the feds,” I smiled a bit, he clenched his fist. “I'm not going to apologize for smiling when you did a good thing,” He leaned back in his chair rolling his eyes. “A goo

Chapter 23

Arianna POV: I woke up the next morning excited to have the weekend to prepare for my new job. It was exciting until I remembered my hastily packed wardrobe and how I hadn’t figured to pack any work clothes. I got up inspecting my clothes and sure enough, there wasn’t anything I would wear to the office insight. My panic had made me pack the most random things from sweaters to swimsuits, to my penguin slippers. I jumped down the stairs, deciding to bother Luca when I saw him, not really thinking after the last week I’d see Gio in the kitchen but there he was Luca lounging at the table scrolling on his phone. “Oh! Morning,” I greeted them, Gio was making pancakes and I walked past him smiling, ignoring the slight blush on my cheeks. “Good morning,” Gio gave me a bright smile. “Morning,” Luca looked between us, taking a sip of his coffee. “Luca, I need clothes for the office can I go shopping today or tomorrow?” I asked him. He nodded to me as he scrolled and I smiled getting up

Chapter 24

Giovanni POV: It was one thing to be haunting Arianna, it was another to barge in on our day out. I was quite enjoying the game we were playing, the fact that her hand was on my arm. I was looking forward to a meal where she would no doubt ask Luca every question under the sun and ignore me. Instead her overly bubbly and highly poisonous sister had to interrupt. She had insisted on joining us and if she wanted to ruin this moment I’d let her. Guilia thought she was far smarter than she really was. If she wanted to attempt to play us that was fine I typically got something out of it. Besides, I wanted to see how Arianna fared against her sister. So far she was the coldest I had seen her, I found myself quite proud of her strength. I know she had been affected by the realization that her sister was part of the plot. We sat down and I crossed my arms as her sister rattled off a list of what she wanted, how she wanted it, and when she wanted it served. The waiter looked at her puzzle

Chapter 25

Arianna POV: I had woken up that evening with a pounding headache and little to no memory of what had been said, I remember her attempting to call me a bitch, and Giovanni escorting her out and after that was all a blur. I had asked him how much sake I had decided to drink and he told me it was more than he would have attempted but he could tell I needed the edge off. Still, I felt highly embarrassed as to what I had done or said, all I knew was when I was having such a wonderful day with him, I was so happy, and seeing her ruined it. Her face flashed into my mind, the anger in her eyes, it was a deep dark coldness that ran through her. The wonderful sibling relationship I thought I had salvaged and recovered seemed to be another stupid and hopeful wish. The next day I stayed in bed still feeling a little rough, more my heart than my head. Gio had to go out and do something, so when we got up this morning for work it was the first I had seen him. He looked exhausted and I poured

Chapter 26

Arianna POV: Gio didn’t return to the office until later than he said, only to pick me up on our way home. He looked better than he had that morning, but if he thought I didn’t notice the new bandage on his hand he was wrong. “There you are,” I exclaimed as he entered my office as I was cleaning up for the day. He sighed in a content way, almost like a relief. I stood up and walked over to him resting my hands on his chest. “You look like you’ve had a long day,” His hands went to my waist holding me softly. His eyes filled with a tenderness as he nodded in agreement. I grabbed my coat and some documents along with the box of fabric handing that off to Luca and thanking him. Gio quirked an eyebrow in question and turned to him with a wicked grin. “My sister has been tarnishing the family name, I’ve decided to provide her with a lesson,” I explained. “Oh! And this is Peanut,” I clapped my leg and the St. Bernard puppy hobbled over. The pet stores had only small teacup dogs that di

Chapter 27

Arianna POV: Gio had been heavily distracted the past couple of days. I thought his night out and the dazed day afterward was a one off occasion, instead, it had become normal. He would drop me off at work in a stupor and then be whisked off elsewhere. Only every couple of days would he sleep in and then make a normal appearance in the office. What bothered me was not the erratic behavior, it was the calm acceptance everyone had towards it. Luca told me not to worry, that Gio was handling something important. I wanted to ask, to know what was so important he was killing himself over it. The only reason I didn’t was I knew the answer, he had discovered something about my father and was working hard to uncover it. He was gathering evidence, finding leads, endless nights doing god knows what to someone to get what he needed to know. I didn’t mention it when I saw the blood splattered on his collar in the morning, and it didn’t make me as sick as I thought it would. Not when I spent my

Chapter 28

Giovanni POV: I knew she would figure it out eventually, I must admit I didn’t think it would be tonight. She came in her face stone cold, her eyes a dark mind of hopeful, found only in those sure of the answer. I excused my cousin and attempted to numb her from the following pain. I had been trying to keep her out of this until I was sure, but her father knew what I was close to and in a desperate attempt to keep her on his side. She had been off since we got in the car, if I was stupid I would have attested that to seeing her father, but I knew she was pulling at something in her mind. She seemed focused and unsettled, so when I saw her come down the stairs in nothing but her robe I knew the question on her mind. “Did he have my mother killed?” She asked. I wouldn’t lie to her, I wouldn’t do that no matter how much easier it would be if I did. She already despised the man, but this would push her over the edge. I prided myself on telling her the truth when most of her life had b

Chapter 29

Giovanni POV: She wasn’t joking when she told me that, she wasn’t as literal as she had sounded but she did intend to torture him before he would die. It was as if I was in some out of body experience, I saw the fire in her rage looking into his crimes getting evidence from the business owners he had pressured and statements. I wanted to tell her to stop, to calm down, not to let this consume her but how could I say that, I was consumed long ago. She now looked at everything through the lens of how this could help her get the one up on her father. As scary as it was seeing this shift in her I was also impressed, I would never say it to her, but she was very much her father's daughter. She was clever, ruthless, and determined. “I don’t think you should go to the office tomorrow,” I told her after three days of her scrounging up evidence and information. “Why not,” her face scrunched in ire. “You are not yourself,” I told her. She began to fold her arms and get haughty but I grabb

Chapter 30

Giovanni POV: I had encouraged her to get the fish and chips we were on the coast if she didn’t get seafood it was practically a crime. I had gotten her to speak and remember her mother, trying to get her to see that this hellbent spiral into pain wasn’t what she would have wanted. Now she had returned to her resolute silence, simmering before me as we waited for our food. “I think that Guilia was involved,” She finally said aloud, looking out at the sea. I stopped, I had long speculated the same, Guila had far too much satisfaction in her eyes when we were at that restaurant. The girl was highly egocentric, she wouldn’t dare believe her mother was right about anything. “What makes you think that?” I asked her. “I read the police report you’d found the first one,” She explained. In my investigation I had come across an initial police report, her mother hadn’t been found at the grocery store but across the street battered, the first cop who came was a rookie and hadn’t been met t
