Part One Hundred and Ten

“This place is fantastic!” Jessica’s voice rang out through the villa as they stepped inside. The air conditioner blasted cool air and it was a reprieve from the heat outside. The excitement on Jessica’s face had Malachi smiling. The door opened to a medium sized kitchen and a living room beyond that. To the right were stairs leading to the bedroom. From the living room you stepped onto a wooden deck that housed a table and chairs. To the right of the deck was a splash pool with sun loungers as the deck stretched out and more stairs became visible that led to a higher deck that also had access to the bedroom. The view that stretched out in front of them rendered them speechless.Malachi put their luggage down in the bedroom as Jessica walked out onto the deck. Malachi joined her with two cold beers from the fridge and handed one to her. It was insanely hot and the humidity was almost oppressive since they were used to the weather in Seward.Malachi took his shirt off and Jessica grinn

Part One Hundred and Eleven

“Archaeologists have found evidence of cannibalism as old as two and a half thousand years ago when they dug up human remains with butcher marks on the bones.”“That’s disgusting. Why would you want to eat another person?” She shuddered.“It was because of tribal and spiritual beliefs. The same way we set a spirit free after a wolf dies, the Fijian chiefs believed that if you consumed your enemy, you would inherit their knowledge, but it was also a means of power or revenge, you know, like a final insult to them,” Malachi explained. They walked around Suva where Malachi stopped at a stall and bought her a cannibal doll made from coconut shells. They continued down the street and she looked back towards the museum. “And one day they just stopped?”“Well, the Christian missionaries basically put a stop to it eventually as many of the locals started worshiping God. One of the missionaries, though, was still killed and eaten by the locals.” Malachi laughed at the horrified look on Jessica

Part One Hundred and Twelve

After the morning that my ears bled, I started having blackouts, losing time. I’d sit in my office busy with paperwork and I’d look up and it would be three hours later, the same paperwork still in front of me. I had no recollection of what happened during this time and I decided to open Karani’s chest again.I didn’t want to tell Adara about the blackouts, there was nothing any of us could do for me anyway and I didn’t want her to worry. Then the guilt hit me again, this was as good as lying, not telling her something she needed to know, that’s how she would see it.After another blackout at the office, I went home late, it was already six pm and I had missed dinner. There were five missed calls from Adara and I wondered how mad she was at me. I drove home and parked in the garage.I walked inside and Adara was coming downstairs. “Sorry I’m late,” I said to her and she smiled.“It’s okay, I just wanted to know if we should wait with dinner or not,” she said.“I hope you didn’t wait,”

Part One Hundred and Thirteen

“What’s going on, why are you crying?” The last time she had seen me cry was the day Christian had died.“Ever since that morning my ears started bleeding, I’ve been having blackouts,” I said to her and she looked at me.“Kiran, that was two weeks ago! Why didn’t you tell me?” she asked me. She wasn’t angry but worried. I was worried too.“I didn’t really realize what was happening to me, at first it was just an hour or two, today it was eight hours,” I said to her as she looked at me, worry creasing her face.“I thought it was the magic at first, part of the recovering phase, but this isn’t normal and I wondered if Karani’s books could tell me anything about it.” I showed her the book.“I didn’t want to worry you because there’s nothing you can do to fix me, and I wanted to wait and see if I could learn something from this,” I said, holding the book up.“And did you?” she asked me.“Yes, I was just getting to the second part when I…” I swallowed back the fresh tears that had started

Part One Hundred and Fourteen

After I put the book down, Adara and I sat there in total silence, so shocked that neither of us could say anything until she broke the silence.“Okay, I have lots of nettle leaves at the shop. You can drink your first cup tomorrow morning, unfortunately you’ll have to suffer through any side effects, I don’t think it’s wise to give you anything for pain or nausea,” she said to me and I looked at her. “I’ll be with you every step of the way, and I mean it,” she added. Her words of support meant more to me than anything else. Despite all my lies and the pain I’d put her through, here she was, prepared to walk this road with me. She loved me, despite all my flaws and it gave me the strength to see this through.I tried to say something but she just carried on talking.“We should do it in the clearing, that’s your most sacred place, it’s where Karani takes you in your mind. You should do it there,” she said and it made perfect sense. Determination swept through me because Adara standing

Part One Hundred and Fifteen

“No! This is beyond insane!” James yelled at me as he sat across from me in the study the following morning.“I don’t have any other option,” I said to him calmly. He needed to understand that I was doing the spell, no matter what he said or thought.“No, Kiran, this magic stuff, it’s messing with your head. How can you even consider doing that?” he said, his voice still loud and angry. “You’re talking about essentially killing yourself!”“You don’t understand, James, being enchanted is not an option either,” I said to him. “That’s basically what Dezrael did to me and look what happened there!” I said to him, also raising my voice. He sat back in the chair and looked at me.“And you’re sure there is absolutely no other way?” he asked me, his voice calmer.“Karani would have given it to me,” I said to him as Adara walked in and brought my cup of nettle tea. I was on day two of drinking it and so far, I only had two side effects, the dizziness, and the headaches.“I can’t believe you’re

I still felt like myself with no symptoms and I had convinced myself that it was possible that Karani was wrong. She’d never done the spell herself so she couldn’t be sure that half-breeds like us would suffer the same symptoms as pure-bred witches.I was positive that I would be different because I really was different but my victory was short-lived and soon turned sour in my stomach. The next four days would test my endurance and my determination. On day three, the nettle tea started to break my system down. I woke up with a splitting headache, it was so bad that I couldn’t open my eyes. Water made me nauseous and I felt like throwing up the whole time although I didn’t.I spent the day in bed and every sound reverberated through my skull, giving me stabbing pains and I flinched at every small sound. It felt like my hearing was enhanced and I could hear the twins crying downstairs. I heard the kitchen sink fill with water as Adara did the dishes. It felt like they were all right the

Part One Hundred and Seventeen

“Are you still okay?” she asked me through the shower door.“Yes,” I said to her as I stood under the hot water.A few seconds later I turned the water off and she handed me a towel when I opened the shower door. Her eyes still held worry as I brushed my teeth. She followed me to the bedroom and sat on the bed as I got dressed.I was tired but I wasn’t in any pain, for me that was a win. I’d take exhaustion over pain any day, especially the kind of pain I’d been in the last few days. Karani had been wrong. The side-effects were so much worse than she’d described in her book.“I’m okay,” I said to her as I pulled the shirt over my head. “Actually, I’m hungry.”She smiled and that made me smile. “Really? What do you want to eat?”“Whatever’s in the fridge is fine,” I said to her and she looked like I’d told her she’d won the national lottery.“I would have started with lunch in half an hour anyway, can you hold out for twenty minutes?” she asked me and I nodded.“I’ll try not to pass ou

Part One Hundred and Eighteen

I went back upstairs after I ate breakfast with Adara and she stayed downstairs to help Norah with the kids. I just needed a few minutes alone, to center myself. I got into the shower and I shaved for the first time in more than a week.“What time do you want to do this thing?” Adara asked me after I showered and came back downstairs, I shrugged instead of answering her. “You shaved.” She looked at me and smiled.“I thought it was about time,” I said to her and she laughed.“I kind of liked that scruffy look on you,” she said to me and I frowned.“Scruffy? I was leaning towards rugged…” Adara laughed again as my voice trailed off.I felt nervous and my heart was beating erratically, thumping hard in my chest. I wished that we didn’t have to do this but I knew there was no other outcome. James opened the front door as we sat by the table.“Hey,” I said to him as I stood up and we hugged.“I’m coming with you,” he said to me.“James,” I began to say but he interrupted me.“No, you’re no

Part One Hundred and Nineteen

I felt that stirring of magic inside me and I saw flames in my mind’s eye. I opened my hands without saying the words and the flames were there, it burned from green to red to blue and I looked at Jessica as she smiled at me. The flames overtook me and I felt the most magnificent, indescribable surge of power go through me.“It’s done, it worked,” I said as the flames died out. Malachi was walking back to the house and I looked at his back, his aura was full of anger.“He’ll get over it, eventually, he doesn’t understand why,” Jessica said to me but she clearly did and normally she would be the first one to yell at me when it came to magic.“I can’t believe you had the guts to do that,” she said and patted me on the back before she also made her way back to the house. Adara came over to me, her one hand full of my blood. She was crying and I walked over to her and hugged her.“That was horrific, I’m sorry,” she said as she cried against me. James was looking at me and I lifted my one
