SEVENTY-ONE

Thea stared down at her phone wondering what had just happened. Preston called saying he was here, in Tennessee with Max and they were waiting for her to go pick them up. How did he even find out where she was? That aside, what was she going to tell Emilia? That she'd led her husband, whom, she considered ex-husband even though they weren't really divorced, to her doorstep? Crap. That wasn't going to end well. "What's with the face?" Emilia asked coming out of the kitchen with Doug. She had to admit that Doug was good with everything. He had changed the baby's diapers and fed her before they came downstairs for breakfast. As if that wasn't enough, the table had been laid out, a hearty breakfast waiting for them. The man was either Superman or he had feelings for Emilia. Now if her friend hadn't gotten over her husband for over ten years, Thea didn't think it would happen then. Or ever. Clearing her throat, she said "Can we talk?" "Yeah. What is it?"

Emilia looked at Max, confused as to why he was there. She shook her head to clear the cobwebs, then remembered Thea had gone to pick them up from the airport. She must have dozed off waiting for them. Blinking, she sat up. "Em," he said with a quivering voice. She stood up and put her arms around him, hugging him, all the while asking herself what he'd done to himself. He looked as if he'd through hell and maybe he had. Guilt lodged in her throat, knowing part of it was her fault. "I'm sorry" he whispered tightening his grip "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry..." He kept saying over and over again. Thea, who was standing at the entrance motioned to her and pointed at the door behind them. She nodded, understanding that they were giving them privacy. Emilia held him for a few more minutes then pulled back "I guess I don't have to ask how you've been. You look like shit, Max" "And you look beautiful," he said swiping his thumb along her cheek, at the tears

Preston stared at the guy holding a baby "Let's start with who you are" "My name is Douglas but most people call me Doug. I would shake your hand if my hands weren't full" he said so cheerfully earning himself an instant dislike. Preston didn't like cheerful people. They were either too nice or psychopaths "You have a last name, Doug?" "O'Leary" "Okay O'Leary, what do you do?" "He's a handyman" Thea answered for him making Preston give her a stinky side eye"Is your name O'Leary?" "You're still mad at me even after I explained myself?" "You got that right. Now shut it" "Oh my gosh, sometimes I think Gaby's IQ is higher than yours" she rolled her eyes while crossing her hands over her stomach. He ignored her because he had more pressing questions that needed immediate answers. Like why there was another man around Emilia and why he had a baby that looked eerily like his best friend's wife.

Max lay on his side, watching as Emilia got in bed beside him then placed the baby between them and proceeded to breastfeed her. Emotion clogged his throat at the scene before him. He'd never been a part of this. When they were in Hawaii, he had pictured what it would be like to be there when their second baby was born. He wanted to be a hands-on dad, always involved in raising his children. He'd thought of playing good cop after Emilia denied them something, coming home to a house full of screams and toys strewn everywhere, putting them to bed and even getting annoyed when they interrupted his time with his wife. After everything that happened, he hadn't thought that was possible. That explained why lying next to them in that bed felt so surreal, like he was back at home and that was just a dream. The thought of waking up to a reality without them made his chest hurt. Raising his hand, he went to rub his chest but somehow his pinky finger ended up clutched tightly in Gaby

SEVENTY-FIVE

Emilia went down to the kitchen thinking Max needed a few minutes with Gaby. She hadn't known he would react that way when he saw her. Maybe she had been tactless in introducing her to him because he was clearly still grieving for Zander but she hadn't thought he would have a panic attack. He had scared the shit out of her. If Doug hadn't been there, Em was sure she would have had one together with him. Knowing Max, he was probably lying about it never happening before. That was one of the reasons she'd asked him to stay. He would never tell anyone he was hurting or cry in front of his family. After his father's death, he'd taken over the responsibility of being the head of the family and he wouldn't act in any way that would be perceived as weak. She understood him but he also needed to really grieve. Neither of them would ever get over Zander's death, it wasn't like breaking up with someone or going through a hard situation. They'd lost a son so it made sense he found it

FLASHBACK"Hold it right there, where do you think you're going? Are you trying to run away from us?" "N... no. I... I... Wa-Was... G.. G.. Going..." They laughed "By the time you finish that sentence it'll be summer break. You know what? I don't care where you were going. Hand it over" She flinched even though they hadn't touched her. "I... Wha... What ab-about... Me?" "What about you?" "I... If... I... I.. Give...you... The mo-money, wh...what... Will I... " "Hand it over and stop stuttering you idiot" the older one snapped. When she didn't make a move to give them the money, they grabbed her bag and dumped everything on the ground then proceeded to kick all her things around, searching for her lunch money. She knew they wouldn't find anything. After being in that school for over a month, she was tired of being bullied. The older girls took her lunch money every day claiming she didn't need to eat since

She would have succeeded if fucking Emilia Parker hadn't shown up. She'd let him date all the other girls at school because she thought it was the right thing to do. Men needed to have their fun before settling down. Now that she thought about it, maybe that had been her mistake. Letting him fuck all those cheerleaders and any whore who threw themselves at him. If she had seized the chance that first time they met, she wouldn't be where she was now. Lisandra didn't regret much in her life but she did regret giving Emilia the chance to take Max away from her. He was always hers until she entered his life. SEVENTY-EIGHT

The weather was chilly even though the sun was out. But then again, that wasn't anything new. In England, it was always one of two things. Either it was extremely hot or cold. There was no average weather. It could be sunny in the morning and by midday the rain would be falling without any warning. TC didn't mind it. After spending months in an underground classified location, he was okay with anything he got. He'd been chasing the Petrovs for years without any progress. It was frustrating every time he came up empty. He'd gather information and evidence, only for it to be inconsequential after he'd taken it to his superiors. Honestly, he had been ready to give up and admit defeat, but then they'd contacted Max Carter wanting to do business with him. That one small mistake had cost them dearly. It had led him straight to them and he hadn't hesitated in taking them out. He would be lying if he said he didn't feel some kind of satisfaction when he pulled the trigger and kill

SEVENTY-NINE

TC left the mall. If he continued standing there like an idiot, he would miss her. If he wanted to see what she was hiding, he'd have to go underground to the parking lot. She would most definitely pass through there in order to get her car. She wasn't so old that she couldn't drive so it was unlikely she had a driver. Walking past the security like someone who was going to pick up his car, he hid behind one of the cars, waiting for her to come down. A few minutes later she came in, pushing someone who was wearing a hoodie over their head. He felt his heart skip a beat. Surely he couldn't be this lucky. Mrs. Carter was definitely keeping secrets, a lot of them from her family. No wonder she looked so scared when she found out who he was. If her children happened to see what she was hiding, there was no telling what they would do. Straightening from his position, TC watched the car speed away. He was going to have to start his investigation all over again. It looked like he

EIGHTY

Max let himself back in the house quietly so he wouldn't wake Emilia or Gaby. He'd gone for a morning run, something he'd been doing for the past two weeks. Emilia had put him on a strict diet and insisted he go back to working out, telling him that he needed to go back to the person she'd married. Funny, because she'd married a young man who was dumb enough to let her go because his pride wouldn't let him go after her. He had told her that but she'd said that wasn't the point. She wanted him to go back to being the strong and healthy man she knew. He hadn't realized how he'd let himself go until she pointed it out to him. Now that he could actually think straight, he understood why Preston and Mel were worried. He had been consumed with so much pain and loneliness that he couldn't see anything past that. He'd heavily relied on alcohol to numb him and it showed. But that was over now, wasn't it? He had his wife back. Well, not really. There hadn't been any intimacy between
