ONE HUNDRED & TWENTY-ONE

Oksana watched Lisandra thinking that maybe it hadn't been a good idea to get her out of prison. Was all that trouble worth it? Mr. Carter wasn't joking around. Word around the street was that the amount he'd offered would go up after every forty-eight hours. She knew how people were when it came to money. For the next few weeks, things were going to be crazy. They would look for her everywhere which meant they had to lay low. For maybe a month or two they weren't going to do anything. Luckily human beings moved on a little too fast. Eventually, they would give up and forget about her. That's when they were going to make their move. Her plan was simple. While Lisandra was busy getting her revenge, that man would definitely go to rescue Mrs. Carter. As a matter of fact, she knew he was already at her house to protect her. In the process of stopping Lisandra, she was going to shoot him. Oksana always imagined filling his body with bullets until there was no chance of anyone saving him.

ONE HUNDRED & TWENTY-TWO

"Half cup granulated sugar, three-quarter brown sugar, one teaspoon salt, half cup unsalted butter, one egg, one teaspoon vanilla extract, one and a quarter cups of all-purpose flour, half teaspoon of baking soda, milk and dark chocolate chunks" Emilia recited. She had everything she needed to make chocolate chip cookies. Max would be back soon and she was going to surprise him with them. Mel had done almost all the chores, Gwen and TC were babysitting Gaby, Doug was nowhere to be seen and Thea was probably busy looking for Lisandra. With nothing left to do, she had decided to keep herself busy by baking. Even though Max had put a price on Lisandra's head, it didn't mean they were going to find her tomorrow or the day after. She could have left the country already. Whoever helped her escape from prison could have whisked her away to another place where they would never find her. Or she could be lurking around her house waiting for the best time to pounce. Either way, Emilia wasn't g

She nodded looking at her feet. "If I'd known that would happen... No, if I knew Lisandra was so evil I never would have let her into our lives" "How have you been Gwen? TC mentioned something about you living in fear. What are you afraid of?" She looked on as Gwen fidgeted, wringing her hands and shifting from one foot to the other. At some point she glanced behind her as if she wanted to be anywhere but in that room with her. Maybe her questions had been too direct and she didn't know Gwen that well to be prying into her life. They hadn't gotten along or been friends so she couldn't expect her to start opening up. Now that she thought about it, Emilia wondered how they had all been so selfish. The other witnesses had said Gwen was shot to prevent her from going after Zander. If they wanted to, they could have killed Zander right there on the street. But they hadn't because Lisandra had wanted to kill her. No one had bothered to check on Gwen or bother to ask how she was. Max was

"Shhh, they're still outside" "Who are you?" Zander whispered"My name is Mark and you just have to follow what I say. Okay?" The man said moving away from the door. No, it wasn't okay. His mother had told him not to trust strangers and he wasn't stupid. He knew that man was with the others. He'd seen them talking earlier when he tried to escape. They had taken him to a house and put him in a room but didn't lock it. So he'd come to the conclusion that they were either stupid or there was no way out of the house and it didn't matter if his room was locked or not. Zander hoped it was the former because he was worried about his Aunt. Was she dead? He'd seen them shoot her before they took him. That had been one of the times when he wished he was a grown-up so he could defend her. The other time was when they first arrived at the house and he saw his father with his hand around his mother's neck. He'd wished Hendrix was there so they could defend his mom. In all honesty, he'd hated ev

"Grandma? Why did we come here? I keep on asking Mark when we'll go home but he doesn't answer me. Can we go back now? I really want to see Mom" "Come on in. Let's talk" "Is this your house?" "Technically it's yours. I put it under your name" His eyes widened "Mine?" "Yes. You're a big boy now, aren't you?" "Yeah" "I'll get you something to eat then we can talk like grownups. Okay?" Zander nodded, distracted by the house. He was old enough now to own one. What would his father say? He knew what his mother would say. That he was too young to even own a phone. But there was nothing she could do since his grandmother had already given it to him. He couldn't wait to be old enough to hold parties and drink beer. His uncle Darren would like it there. He always told him how he'd be the one to give him his first drink. "Here, I made those cookies you and your father like so much" "Thank you" "I don't want to lie to you Zander, so I will tell you the truth. It's going to

Max ran his hand along her jaw, wanting her to wake up but afraid of what she was going to say. Once the shock wore off, she was going to be pissed that he didn't tell her about Zander. In his defense, he was about to tell her but then Lisandra's issue came up. That was a lame excuse considering he'd known Zander was alive for three weeks. He had been afraid to tell her because he knew she would hate his mother more than she already did and maybe despise him a little. Not that he'd been okay with what his mother had done. Hiding their son and having them believe he was dead for two years wasn't right. For a moment there he'd hated her, especially when he thought she had something to do with his death. But in his books, she was still his mother. He couldn't completely resent her and Zander being alive was more important than dwelling on the whys. Whatever she had done didn't matter. His son was alive and well and healthy. Hadn't he spent day and night praying for that? He only wish

Swallowing he went to the kitchen. Gaby was in his mother's arms, sleeping peacefully. He remembered that day in the hotel room when he'd wondered if it was right to tell her about his daughter. How long ago was that? It felt as if it was another lifetime. "She's beautiful Max" his mother whispered looking down at Gaby in awe. "She's an angel. I'll put her to bed. If you're hungry I suggest you eat because Emilia's shock is starting to wear off. My guess is that she's going to be pissed" "And she has every right to" Gwen spat out. He glanced over at her and was shocked to see the look in her eyes directed at their mother. They were close and rarely had any disagreements. For the first time, he wondered what had happened to her. She didn't look like the same little sister he knew. "I'll put the baby in bed then you and I are going to have a talk, Gwen" "I would like that very much because I have a lot to say to you both" As he was lifting Gaby into his arms, he noticed TC's hand w

"Don't you think you should calm down a little before we get there? You barely slept last night" TC said. Gwen threw him a glare before saying, "You should concentrate on driving. If we get in an accident, I will kill you first before I get to them" "You're really scary right now. Remind me not to get on your bad side, Miss Carter" "You already did. I let you off easy" "Why? Because I'm hot, sexy, have intense eyes, nice long fingers, goodness, I could go on all day" he mocked making her duck her head to avoid the embarrassment. She still couldn't believe he'd heard all that. If she hadn't been so angry last night she would have probably died from mortification. For the hundredth time, she wondered how that monitor had turned itself on. Gaby hadn't been playing with it and Emilia had been busy dressing her. Had it been on all that time? "Can you please pretend you didn't hear anything?" "Why? I like what I heard Gwen. I like knowing you've had dirty dreams about me because I

Gwen!" Max tried to slap her but Emilia stopped him. "Don't stop him, Emilia. Go ahead Max, slap me" "I know you're angry but you have no right to insult our mother. Apologize to her right now" "Why? Will apologizing give me back the two years I lost?" "What are you talking about?" "That's right. You were grieving for your son so the rest of the world didn't exist. But while you were doing that, I was popping sleeping pill after sleeping pill so I could sleep for a few hours. I was so scared Max, scared that those men would find me and finish what they'd started. I spent months locked in the house because the sound of tires screeching scared the hell out of me. If TC hadn't come for me, I would still be in that house, alienated from the outside world. Why did I have to go through that if it could have been avoided? Why did I have to get shot twice if mom could have prevented it?" "I didn't know honey, I really didn't" Genevieve cried but all Gwen could see was how no one cared a

Emilia hadn't thought Gwen was capable of being so angry and lashing out. She was the kind of person who followed what others told her to do. Lisandra had manipulated her so easily because she saw the best in people. Maybe that was the reason she'd never held a grudge against her. Most of the time, she didn't know what was going on until the last minute then she played along just to support her mother or best friend. But the Gwen that had told off Genevieve was a different person. For the first time, she had acted like a grown-up and spoken her mind.It was true that they'd all abandoned her. Granted they were all grieving for Zander but still, she was the one who'd woken up alone in a hospital room. Not only with two holes in her body but also ridden with guilt. Now that Emilia thought about it, the past two years must have been hard for her. The trauma of being shot must have taken a toll on her. She'd read about how victims of traumatic incidents needed assistance, both professiona
