Prologue

Loud cheers rang out from the hallway. Students, fleeing from the prom dance floor, ran towards the scene, grinning. Following the footsteps of the cheers, a strange heaviness knotted my gut. My heart was throbbing, daring to rip out of its cage. With slow and heavy steps, I approached the direction of the cheer. What’s going on? I wondered, placing a hand on my chest. My classmates had formed a big circle around something going on then I heard my boyfriend’s voice say: “to the love of my life..” “What the heck?” I pushed through the heaviness of prom dresses, earning groanings and frowns. Then I made my way out and stood at the center. “Will you be my girlfriend and chosen mate?” Roger, my boyfriend, asked a petite blonde (Emily), one knee on the ground as he held a clearly fake diamond ring to her finger. “I promise I can’t live without you.’ “Yes, baby!” She grinned, sliding her finger into the ring.My entire body began to tremble, a loud ringing sound filled my ears. Chapter 1

SIX YEARS LATERA 20-hour drive from home, a 5-hour shift at the bar, and 3-hours of sleep, yet, I had to catch up with my 8am class.“There was an mail for you. It says it’s important.” Raina, my dorm roommate, announced. My gaze traveled to the mail on the table and these words were written on the envelope in huge, bold fonts: “EXTREMELY IMPORTANT, FROM YOUR UNIVERSITY.” Ripping it open, my eyes scanned through its content: ‘Dear Lyric, This is from the Financial Aid Department. The semester is approaching an end, and your grades have been falling drastically. It has been brought to attention that your records show that you have been missing a lot of class lately. This is a second warning, and you understand that based on your scholarships’ coontracts, if you have a third warning from us, you are at a risk of losing your full-coverage scholarship. Also, please remember that you have to maintain a 3.5 GPA to continue enjoying the benefits of your scholarship for the continuing se

Chapter 2

The weekend arrived in a blink of an eye, and I was too broke for an outfit, so Raina had offered my current choice of costume: a skin-tight black, cat, leather, jumpsuit. . It had a pair of black earrings and a black cat ears headband attached to it. Plus, it revealed more of my cleavage than I'd have liked, but since it was all I had, I stuck with it. I had an email from my Economics professor in my online class. “Hey, Class. Do not forget your homework deadline is today. It is the hard due date, so I won't accept any request for extensions. Also, please remember that our exams are coming up on the 1st of November, Monday, so please ensure you are studying for it, as it is worth 30% of your total grades. Goodluck and Happy Halloweens. Dr. Bri–'' I stopped reading.Great, another huge thing I had to remember. My grade was close to a D in that class, so I couldn’t dare to miss this exam, or I could lose all my scholarships. This professor was such a strict, annoying dude. Thank good

***My mind had been racing through my mate. I had moved so far away from the werewolf shenanigans to avoid ever having a mate again, but it went over my head that werewolves could be mated with a human. What stupid trick was destiny playing on me? Most rejected werewolves never have a mate again and die single. That's what I had looked forward to and planned my life in.I had shut my heart to anything that seemed like love, to avoid getting hurt, and now this? “I never asked for a second chance mate!” I yelled at my reflection and resumed angrily brushing my teeth. “Don’t worry, the university is huge. I would most definitely not find him again.” I convinced myself, trying to stop the tightness that had raveled up my gut since last night. Plus, he was human, so in his perspective, a girl he was flirting with just screamed at his face and ran away. If that isn’t crazy, I don't know what else is. Once I was done with my morning rituals, I picked my phone up. There was an email from

My heart dropped to my feet. He knew we were mates? That meant one thing…Not only was it strange that I found my second chance mate in Dentville, he was also a werewolf. A freaking werewolf. Strange goosebumps spread across me. The room was cold, but not cold enough to send chills down my body. Realizing he was still holding me, I assumed that whatever was going on with me had to do with touch (the whole mate bond nonsense). Stealing my hand from his grip, I asked, “How did you know I would come here today?”“I figured you would after realizing you were one of my students.”“But I didn’t even mention my name to you.” The fact that he was a werewolf as well made my brows furrow. “I ran away from every nonsense of the werewolf world. I want nothing to do with werewolves.”“Same, and that was why I came to find you.”"What the heck is that supposed to mean?" I glared. "That's not important." He stood up, “What is important right now is the deal I have for you.” “Deal?”“Yes.” He gav

I was still trying to wrap my head around the whole professor-mate nonsense. As if that wasn't enough of a problem, my boss had been stressing me out. My job was on the line since I ran out of the bar against his command."Plesse, Mr. Tucker. I promise you it was an actual emergency that made me leave." my palms hugged tightly, my knees on the ground. This job was my only hope of survival and the closest to campus that paid well; losing it wasn’t an option."Foolish woman. Do you know the amount of customers I'd have lost? You ran off, making a joke out of me yelling your name." He roared. Shutting my eyes, I sucked in a breath. My knees were burning from the grimy hard ground, and he had been raining saliva on me for the last thirty minutes I had been begging him. Regardless, I wasn’t leaving until he let me keep my job. "Please." Wss all I could say. He scoffed. "Please? That's your excuse?!" He rose to his feet, kicking the plastic chair till it fell to its side. I flinched and w

Chapter 6

Taking a minute to suck in a deep breath, I reminded myself that I wasn’t just meeting my mate, but also my professor. Talk about my exam, leave. That’s it. Once my breathing stabilized, I hit the bell and opened the door after the light turned green. Professor Brian's gray eyes lifted from the book he was reading, without lifting his head. "You're here sooner than I thought." Just the sound of his voice sent instant chills down my spine. "Sit." He ordered and that made a frown form on my face. Without another choice, I sauntered and sat across from him, my toes curling against my sandals. "Good evening.""Yeah. Give me a minute. I need to punch these grades in, then I'll attend to you." He said and I nodded. The silence in the room made me feel sweaty. My fingers were picking at my nails, my eyes wandering around in search of nothing specific. The few times I stole glances at him, I forgot how to breathe. His head of hair swung around as he moved, his gray eyes dancing like silent

I placed my hands on his chest, gently pushing him away. Once the spark hit me, I immediately withdrew my hands. "What is all of this about?" "I need you." He said in a low growl. Need me…. The way he said it made me feel like the last piece of diamond on earth. That made blood rush to my cheeks. He heaved a sigh. "Lyric, the last thing I want to do is scare you away, so we'll take things slowly. I understand this is a drastic change for you, especially since you don’t want a mate, but everything we do will be in your will. Nothing rushed, nothing forced." For the first time since the Halloween party, he sounded the way he had sounded that night, enchanting, not the authoritative tone he spoke with. "Please don't view this as completely negative. Can you attempt to give this a try? If it doesn't work for you, then you can just keep it as an act till the deal can be cut off." I let myself dwell on it, and honestly, what did I want? Since Roger broke up with me, I had lost all hop

Chapter 8

'Good morning. How are you today?' A text from Brian popped up on my phone. Rolling in bed, I pursed my lips to hold back my smile. 'Good morning. I'm pretty well. Uow are you?' I texted back. 'Great too. What are you up to? Any plans for the weekend?' 'Not really. Just homework, class projects, and studying for your exam and homework. Come on dude, why is your homework so hard? This isn't Harvard! (Pouting emoji).'He responded with a laughing emoji, and that was it. I waited for the next couple of minutes till the colors that once flushed my cheeks faded. "Seriously?" I scoffed, tossing the phone on the bed and sat up. Raina's eyes were glued to me. We both maintained a silent eye contact till a smirk formed on her face. "You've been on the phone with someone lately." "Yeah, an old friend." I climbed off the bed. '"Just a friend, uh? It doesn't seem so. You've been grinning from ear to ear, blushing, squealing into your pillow, kicking your feet in the air, and laughing to yo

“What the heck, Celine, what are you doing?" Brian groaned, jerking to his feet. He reached for my napkin and started wiping the stain of his shirt and face, frowning. She scoffed. "Are you playing with me right now? Who the hell is she?" She glared at me and I froze. Her face was crumpled together like a tigress ready to devour her prey– me, in this situation.. "That's none of your business. You shouldn't be doing this either." He glared. "Why not? My fiance is whoring around with some slut and I shouldn't do anything about it?" She raised her voice. Slut? I jerked to my feet. "What is going on?" I demanded, frowning. "It's nothing.” He tried to dismiss me. "What is going on?" I demanded, raising my voice a little. "I'll tell you. Brian and I have been engaged for five years." She extended her hand, exposing a huge diamond ring on her ring finger. Something struck my heart and made my body weak. It felt like I was reliving my most bitter memory. My lips quivering, I turned
