Chapter 1

[MADDOX] “You are fired!”I could not break this news in simpler words than these, and I wasn’t reveling in the way she was ready to break down right in front of me, either. When someone did that, didn’t you feel a surge of guilt come at you from all sides, seeking to smother, strangle, and wreck you until you gave up or gave in?Yeah, that one. Nope. I didn’t feel that.“Oh, come on, Ms. Williams, we both knew this day was coming. Your probation period expired months ago, and you haven’t met a single target. No sale. No job.” I said it casually. I could hear the crackles of domineering power in my voice and didn’t have to estimate what it might be for Genevieve Williams, twenty-five, to be on the receiving end of.However, before Genevieve could respond legitimately on how and why she may still be a benefit to my firm, the door to my office cabin burst wide open, and a man in a crisp black suit came inside with all the authority in the world. The authority I did not remember giving

Chapter 2

Jade and I got out of the building in no time and drove separately in our own cars.A familiar bungalow came into view.I parked in the driveway and tossed the keys to the guard standing near the door as I shuffled inside. Jade was already in. Her handbag was tossed onto the couch in the living room. The entire place was thoroughly illuminated, but no one was in sight. I knew exactly where to find Jade, so I headed upstairs, taking off my leather jacket and draping it over a chair before turning down a hallway, focusing on one door among many secured ones.I could hear an enigmatic sound from the other side, and even though I hadn’t opened the door yet, my ears perked up. But when I finally entered, I saw a sight that knocked the air out of my lungs—in a good way.A woman was tied up in a chair. Her blonde hair was rumpled and messy, her skin sweaty, and her clothes wrinkled and blotched with hideous stains of blood. Thick red liquid oozed from a nasty cut on the side of her forehead.

Chapter 3

[ZARA]A little lie hurts no one, right?Since a very young age, I’ve struggled to contain my ever-growing temper. I still do. I don’t know.Maybe something is wrong with me. Maybe the nerves shooting emotions into the brain are shorter and faster in my case. Or maybe folks are just plain stupid. Could be anything, really.Like every other person in the world, I have my limitations. I don’t like myself, don’t think anyone does. Not with the temper that I always bristle with. After all, people stay away from those who make a scene. And the experience I have in that department, it’s impossible to break that record. But causing a scene and drawing unwanted attention to yourself doesn’t happen out of a hobby. No one enjoys the look of ‘what a weirdo’ people define them with. No one. Trust me.But sometimes, you just don’t have a choice. Or control, in my case. Although this time, there is a legitimate reason to support my actions. For the last few years, the men from R & R Developers have

Chapter 4

[MADDOX]For the first time in my life, I hated the emptiness of my cabin. It annoyed me so much that I wanted to tear this place apart with my bare hands and burn that fucking door.Barking dogs seldom bite. That’s how the phrase goes. But this crazy-ass woman, who stormed out of my office with that flippant attitude, leaving a throbbing imprint of her hand on my cheek, not only yelled her ass off but also bit me.Fuck. How dare she?I clenched my fists, trying to quiet the frenzy of anger coursing through my body. I grimaced at the screen of my phone before dialing a number and anxiously waiting for the call to be answered. It took everything in me not to pursue that stupid girl to her doom. I rolled my shoulders to keep myself from doing anything stupid, like taking the pistol from my drawer and firing a hole in the middle of her head. The fact that I wasn’t easily irritated said a lot about how angry I was right now.The moment Josh came on the line, I snarled, “Office. Now!”I hu

Simply get out of my restaurant!” Nicholas Samuel snapped with an angry sneer, pointing his fat finger at the door.I wish I could tell you I knew what was going on here. I couldn’t.Nicholas Samuel was the owner of the restaurant where I worked, and I had been the manager until he arrived at work this morning in a terrible mood and abruptly fired me. How could you—how could this—what have I done? Is it because I took three days off from work? Is this—” He extended his hand to signal me to be quiet, not letting me finish.“It’s not about your damn le

[ZARA]“Thank you for doing this on such short notice, Brandon. I don’t know what more to say.”Nicholas Samuel fired me almost three months ago, and my life has been a living horror ever since. I’m not sure who to blame for this dreadful run of bad luck that doesn’t seem to be ending anytime soon.I don’t know what to do.For starters, I haven’t been able to land a single decent job in the entire city, let alone the local area. I was even willing to travel three hours each way via metro to interview at a four-star hotel that had shown interest in my résumé. But before my hopes could materialize, like a personal reminder of hell, they hired someone else while I waited endlessly for their call. For the following three months, this continued, and I’ll be honest with you: I’ve become hopeless and depressed.I’m not sure where my life is going. Chapter 7

[MADDOX]“I don’t understand. How hard could it be to find one man?” I heard myself shout.“Calm down, Maddox. We’re trying our best.”“You call this your best?” I scoffed. What the fuck was wrong with her? And how the hell could she be so calm? “I want some fucking results, Jade. I don’t know what you and your men are doing, but you’re getting me nowhere.”It had been nearly two years, and we hadn’t been able to get anything on Richard Milton. How could he just disappear? It’s impossible. Unless someone much more powerful pulled him under their wing. And that’s the mystery I couldn’t solve for the life of me. Who would want to make an enemy out of me? Who could be that stupid? But Jade was right. I needed to calm the fuck down because getting worked up was going to get me nowhere. It fucking got me into more shit if I’m honest.Like the time I had to deal with that demented girl who dared to slap me in my office, I couldn’t get that insult out of my head. It’s impossible to. [ZARA]“Congratulations, Ms. Fisher. We are delighted to have you on board,” the man in the crisp black suit said with a gentle smile.Did I really just land this job? Did this really happen?Unable to help myself—overwhelmed with happiness and relief—a chuckle escaped from my mouth. “Thank you so much. It’s such a pleasure to be able to work again.”During the interview, they were curious about the reasons my previous employer sacked me. As usual, I decided honesty was the best policy. I told them everything that had happened, from start to finish.Brian, one of the interviewers and part-owner of the restaurant, called my ex-boss absolutely unprofessional. He even shared his experience about the time they met during a food carnival in Los Angeles. Let’s just say it left a bitter taste in Brian’s mouth. Even after the interview was done, he couldn’t stop talking about how much he would like to punch him in the face.“I guess it was unprofessional on his part to speak about someone beh

[MADDOX]“So, what do you say, Richmond?” asked the man in his early forties, sitting across the table, donned in a fine business suit and a crooked grin. “Are you happy with the deal? Should we proceed with the paperwork?”Joseph Bennett was a big name in the corporate world. He was a force to be reckoned with. The man had everything: money, power, and influence. I could even name some illegal businesses under his name. But that was a dark side everyone in this business world had. It was impossible to survive without one. Sometimes, one needed more than a clean reputation and a devious personality to get what one wanted. And right now, Joseph Bennett was desperate to have me on his side. I knew what his deal was. I knew about the losses his company in New Zealand was suffering while he sat here in this fancy restaurant, pretending he wasn’t about to go broke in the next few months.I admired his courage and dedication to fight till the end. Chapter 10

[ZARA]After washing my hands and blow-drying them, I looked at myself in the mirror and reapplied my nude lipstick. It had been a week since I joined my new workplace, and everything had been going great so far. My bosses were happy with my work, and the customers were satisfied with the services. I couldn’t be happier. Everything was just so… great. It was so unbelievable that I had been wondering if I would somehow jinx it. I wasn’t superstitious, but so much had happened in the last few months. It had left a lasting scar on my mind. It left me with the realization that nothing was permanent and that I had to work a little extra hard to prevent something like that from happening again.I knew I was thinking too much. I was worrying too much when I should be happy and enjoying my life, as Brandon and Mom told me to. But I couldn’t help this vague feeling crawling in my chest, as if at any moment, something bad would happen and destroy the stability I had worked so hard to build.Mom
