Chapter 41.

MAEVE I could barely look at Maruska's face as he lifted me from my very awkward fall. My face flushed in deep embarrassment and I avoided eye contact with him. My feet hit the floor and pain shot up my right leg, causing me to stagger. Maruska caught me again, giving me a hard look this time. I looked down at my ankle to see it was starting to get swollen. Shit. All I had wanted to do was to act casual. How did I end up in this mess? "What are you doing down here this late?" He asked. This was the first conversation we were having in about a week. I had no idea why his tone had me disoriented. Or was it the pain I was feeling? "I got thirsty," I replied curtly and leaned against the banister for support. "You really did get thirsty?" He asked, raising his brows in askance. "You weren't trying to escape?" I scoffed. "I just fell, Maruska, but all you're concerned about is my escaping?" "I got a report that the doctor was called here today.”

Chapter 42.

MAEVE "I'm glad to see you awake." I jumped immediately and turned to find the doctor who was here yesterday standing by the bed. My eyes widened and I stuttered as I tried to maintain composure. "H-hello. I didn't realize you were here." He nodded. "I got a notification this morning that Mr Romanovich wanted me here immediately. I wasn't able to come last night due to a slight inconvenience. My apologies." "It's fine," I replied in a tired tone. "I am fine." "He said you weren't last night." "I was.” My brows knitted, did I even say that? “Well I'm fine now," I replied, feeling greatly uncomfortable that a man was staring at me just as I awoke from my sleep. "I'll check your vitals and also look at your sprained ankle. It's swollen." I pulled away from him and immediately he took my hand. "Don't touch me!" He sighed and leaned away from me. "I can't leave this room until I am sure you're fine. Mr Romanovich isn't also going to like the fact th

Chapter 43

MAEVE Without thinking, I pushed my chair back and tiptoed towards the entrance of the dining room, my head peeking out as I watched Maruska cross the room, over to Yuri who stood with other guards. "What has happened to my cargo?" "Apparently, it was hijacked by a rival group," Yuri replied. "The Dark hides." Maruska burst into laughter. But it wasn't a laughter of amusement. It scared the hell out of me because I knew there was a murderous intent behind that laugh. "They're going to learn a lesson, and that's never to tamper with Maruska or anything that belongs to him. Have the men surround every one of their warehouses. I don't care what they do, but make sure they tear the warehouses down until they return my cargo. I have a meeting to be at." The men hurried out of the mansion. Maruska must have sensed my presence because he immediately turned to look at me. I stood frozen, too late to even hide as he already caught me watching from where I stood.

Chapter 44.

MARINA Today, I had a political rally to attend. My father was running for the position of the Minister of Interior/Defense. It was a very smart move for him to make. I gave myself all the credit as it was I, who convinced him to run for that office. And I fucking knew he was going to. He barely said no to me so I had the upper hand here. This was going to make things easier for me. I wouldn't have to worry about security processes or rectification of my goods. It was a relief. A great relief. I smiled at myself in accomplishment. What I lacked in being a good, dutiful wife, I had in abundance when it came to being a smart woman. Maruska knew that and even if the love wasn't there, he appreciated my wits. But the idea of attending the rally with him made me displeased. We were going to pretend, yet again, to be the ideal, happy couple. But we both had unspoken grudges against each other and I knew Maruska was waiting for me to speak first so he could attack

Chapter 45.

MAEVE I was squished in between two men dressed in suits. It was such an uncomfortable situation because what the hell did I do to deserve this? Anyone who saw me in this situation would believe that the IRE had caught up with me and was transporting me to their base for the federal crime I committed, not knowing that I was a badly paid attorney who probably didn't have that badly paid job again. I decided to distract myself by looking out through the windows. Hopefully, I will find a sense of hope here. After speaking with Anya yesterday, even if nothing tangible came out of it, I felt a little better after hearing her voice. It gave me a sense of purpose. It was a reminder that if I wanted to escape, I really could. The men only had intercoms attached to their ears and a walkie-talkie blaring statically in front of the car. There were no phones to steal, and hell, I wasn't a pickpocket. I could get caught. So I decided I was going to pretend to be happy t

Chapter 46.

MAEVE Without wasting much time, I climbed out of the bed, catching myself against the iron railing before I crashed to the floor. In my excitement, I'd totally forgotten I had a sprained ankle. I supported myself against the edge of the bed before heaving forward and limping to the door. I pressed my back against it, peeking out of the glass to see if anyone was there. Thankfully, no one but regular staff was walking past, some in a hurry, some relaxed. Slowly, I twisted the door knob, pushing it open. I looked from side to side for any mean dressed-in suit before I dashed in the other direction. My sprained ankle slowed me down but I didn't stop. I weaved past people, my head bowed low because I was sure as hell that someone would recognise me. And I honestly wasn't ready to go through that stress. I heard the thud of footsteps coming in my direction and snapped my head up to see one of Maruska's guards at the far end of the hall. Panic set in and I collide

Chapter 47.

MARUSKA "Take cover!" Someone yelled at the top of their voice, immediately wrapping their arms around Viktor's crouched figure. The crowd broke apart. People ran helter-skelter as they tried to find shelter. I knew today would end up in a terrible stampede with an estimate of about two to three people dying and many people getting injured. I grabbed Marina before she made her way over to her father and pulled her to my side. "C'mon, let's head back to the limo!" "My Dad!" She cried, turning in his direction and reaching for him. But I grabbed her hand and pulled her back. "We need to get him too." "Viktor is safe!" I yelled at her. "C'mon, don't make this hard for us. He has guards protecting him. Let's go!" She nodded and glanced from side to side before we broke into a run. Guards flanked us, aggressively pushing people to the side to create a way for us, and soon enough, we were closing in on the limo on the other side of the square. Another gun

Chapter 48.

MAEVE I sat in bed, shaken by everything that had happened today and mostly mad at myself that I had been unable to make anything out of it. I was back in this room and its imposingly crippling walls that only reminded me of the miserable person I was. With a cup of warm jasmine tea cradled in my hands, I let the tears run free. I wanted to be at myself for not being fast enough, then I remembered I tried everything I could to escape. I was close. Fucking close to escaping. And somehow, Maruska's men caught up with me. Everyone in the country would have been rich if they had the same determination and grit as his men. Because how the hell would I be able to escape now? Maruska was sure to double his security once again and probably have me locked up in my room. I remained seated in this bed until I heard the sound of the gates opening. I could taste the fear on my tongue, feel my heartbeat in my throat. My hands shook and the scalding hot cup

Chapter 49.

MARUSKA Tonight, I sat behind the soundproof glass, watching clubbers have fun from up here. Most of them, obviously oblivious to the things that happened here, drank and frolicked against each other to the rhythm of the music. Being drunk was a weakness. An optional vulnerability. I looked around in disdain at the drunk men. Not only did it make them susceptible to being attacked, it made most of them instant predators. I caught sight of Yuri coming towards me from my peripheral vision. Turning to him, I raised a brow in askance. He quickened his footsteps and leaned down at me. "Boris says he's got no info on what happened on the rally grounds, but I believe he is telling a lie." My interest was immediately piqued. I had a thing for liars, and that was getting the fucking truth out of them. It made me excited to get it out of them, by using force or not. "How sure are you that he is?" "I saw someone tip him off on my way in. When I asked the boun

Chapter 50.

MAEVE The next morning, I woke up to a terrible feeling of nausea. The build-up was slow and oddly disturbing. One moment, I was seated in my bed, confused and trying to soothe my disturbed stomach in whatever way possible, and the next, a deep rumble in my stomach had me hurriedly climbing out of the bed and rushing towards the restroom. I pushed the door open and in my haste, I crashed to my knees, before the toilet and pushed the lid open. Everything I'd eaten last night came rushing out of my mouth. A sick feeling sat at the pit of my belly and even when there was nothing to puke out, the retching was still there. I fell back against the wall closest to me and began to sob. My stomach ached and a terrible headache banged away behind my head. It wasn't like I was experiencing a hangover from drinking too much, right? Because I drank nothing but water and the soothing tea Irina so loved to bring to me. I leaned towards the toilet, closed the lid, and flushed
