Chapter 31 : The Duty of the Alpha

Marcus’s POVWhile Marcus truly believed that being the president of a country was nothing like running a pack, it was pretty damn close. Work every day, all the time, seven days a week, and then some, and on call whenever shit went down and even when it didn’t.Negotiations, spats, over territory, resources, allies, everything, anything. Documents needing to be looked over and signed, transfers to other packs both diplomats and marriages needing to be approved, and programs and more to support not just the packs and werewolves but all supernaturals, and keep their hidden community safe. So, when Marcus managed to get to bed after a hard day of work and making sure a vampire lord wasn’t about to rain hell down on his sons and was just in their usual haunt, he didn’t expect or want to be woken up a few hours later to deal with a problem. However, that problem was his sons, so despite how tired he was, and how irritated the situation was making him, he grabbed a robe to throw ove

Chapter 32 : The West Wing

Eleonore’s POVI had the distinct impression that I was written off by their father as Gael and Missael led me to ‘the west wing’, and I didn’t need a degree to know that was code for ‘stay away from my boys’.Maybe I was overthinking it, but it was hard not to when there were a lot of things against me and not much I could offer, especially as a mate.Despite the harshness of it all, the west wing wasn’t some dungeon-like tower. It was as beautiful as the rest of the mansion, just less… personal. Fewer family portraits and artifacts, and more inane sculptures and scenic photos decorated the place. It reminded me a bit more of the hotel, my home, and it didn’t set me on edge, but it made everything feel… colder.“Hey, it’s gonna be alright,” Missael told me, and I managed to give him a small smile, but from the way he continued to look worried, I didn’t do so well at hiding all the emotion underneath it too. Empath powers definitely counted as cheating in this moment.“Well

Chapter 33 : Should I Leave?

Eleonore’s POVNo one told me that breakfast was at 8 a.m. I assumed it would be early but after last night I had hoped we’d be sleeping in. Apparently not.We all only got a few hours of sleep, so when Missael came to get me, he looked just as tired as I was. He handed me a bundle of clothes I could wear and then I followed him down to the dining room in a pair of slacks and a button-up.They weren’t the right size, but they worked well enough for the situation. I left the campus with nothing but my laptop, my driver’s license, and a stack of homework, so anything I could actually wear was greatly appreciated. He stopped me outside of a pair of large doors, taking both my hands and squeezing them encouragingly, sharing a quick kiss before letting go and escorting me inside. Showtime then, I guessed. The Sined family and I were the only ones in the dining room beyond some people who were laying plates of food on the table.“Seems your guest has arrived,” Marcus spoke, going

Chapter 34 : No Easy Answers

Eleonore’s POV Missael had managed to cheer me up but after he had to leave to take care of his own duties, I returned to my room, both to stay out of the way and also because I didn’t want to be forced to interact with anyone. My situation was already precarious, and I didn’t want to rock the boat. Lillian was just one person, but she gave me a good idea of how other people saw me, especially after breakfast with Alpha Sined.A guest, not even his sons’ girlfriend or anything like that, just a guest in his manor, but I’ve been a guest in my own home before. If he wanted to chase me away, then I was certainly going to be a lost cause. If he wanted me gone, he was going to have to order it.Both my computer and my phone were dead, I hadn’t thought to charge them the night before. I plugged them in and organized my homework into what I’d have to send in and what I had time to do before drafting an email to my professors to apologize for my absence.I’d have to ask Gabriel what

Chapter 35 : Another Interruption

Eleonore’s POVMy professors were all kind and understanding. It was rather easy for me to get approval to continue my classes online. I couldn’t go to any lectures and had to do a lot of self-research and homework to make up for it all, but it was something.I wouldn’t be flunking out of my classes or ruining my GPA. It also gave me something to do, along with an excuse to stay in my room. For two weeks I had been in the care of the Sined pack and things had settled down. That didn’t mean my position or situation changed though. Lillian very grudgingly guarded me and hated my guts, I had yet to see Alpha Sined since that first breakfast, and my mates were all busy with their own schoolwork, so we were only able to meet up during meals or in very public areas. The rest of the pack wasn’t very fond of me either. No fault to them, I wasn’t exactly the most welcoming sight at the moment, not with the things coming after me. They at least had the decency to keep their distance and

Chapter 36 : A Voice in the Dark

Eleonore’s POVThe walk back to my room was quiet, though less oppressive now that Lillian wasn’t here. I didn’t know what she wanted from me—well, no, I did. She liked Gael, a lot, and thought she was better for him, and in some ways she wasn’t wrong, but the fact was I loved him.It sounded like a paltry defense almost, that love triumphed over everything else and could make up for any shortcomings that I had. That wasn’t how it worked. What I don’t think Lillian understood though was that because I loved them I’d work my butt off so I COULD make up for those shortcomings.I loved Gael and Gabriel and Missael and I wasn’t just going to give that up no matter how nasty people were acting. Right now, I just had to endure. Slowly I’d get smarter, understand more, be able to do more, and contribute. It would take time to prove myself, but I could, and I would. As long as Alpha Sined didn’t kick me out then things were still okay. I still had a shot of showing everyone that I co

Chapter 37 : Duty and Decisions

Missael’s POVWe watched as Eleonore had to hurry to catch up to Lillian so she could be led back to her room while we had to go meet with our father. It felt like an attack that he chose NOW of all times for us to meet.It had been so long since we’d been able to spend time with Eleonore so none of us appreciated having that messed with.Gael had actually put a lot of work into setting up that dinner and Lillian just casually helped ruin it. Worse, I don’t think she felt guilty about it.I don’t know if Gael was acting oblivious or not, but Lillian had been burning a torch for him for him for years. I wasn’t sure when it started, they’d been just friends before fooling around and causing trouble. While Gael kept to mischief though, Lillian sort of sobered up to it, but seemed to come to like Gael more than just a friend. It was probably for a number of reasons but one of the main reasons was that he respected Lillian.Lillian was rather young when she became part of the Al

Chapter 38 : Betrayed From Within

Gael’s POVI ran as fast as I could, heart in my throat as I kicked down Ellie’s door, hoping for a startled shriek, a yell, or even getting scolded, it would’ve been wholly preferable to the reality that the room was empty. There was no sign of Ellie, and I almost collapsed to my knees when I was overcome by the truth. Valerian had gotten her. He had come into her home and gotten her with no… no one to defend her.If there had been a guard, there would’ve been signs of a fight, bloodshed, some sort of destruction but no. There was nothing, just pristine halls, and empty rooms, meaning that when Ellie was taken, she’d been alone.…She’d been alone? No—that wasn’t right. There’d always been someone nearby. Either she was in the dining room getting meals with us, spending time with us, or she was in her room being guarded by Lillian or escorted back.Ellie had been escorted back, so where was Lillian?“LILLIAN!” Gabriel howled with pure rage.I guess he came to the same con

Chapter 39 : Vitality of Souls

Eleonore’s POVI had never woken up more upset. Not even when I woke up to learn my first period had started in the middle of the night and I thought I was dying. Not when I was told Thomas was going to be shipped away overseas barely a few months after Mother died.Waking up in a strange decrepit room right out of a medieval castle after being kidnapped by someone I was coming to detest brought me to a whole new level of upset that it completely blocked out the fear. But only for a moment. And for that moment I lay there, shocked and confused and wholly unsure of just what I was supposed to do.I had just been kidnapped by my nightmare incarnate, no one knew I was kidnapped, and now something nefarious was going to happen without my position in an indiscernible amount of time.Suffice it to say I was in a mental limbo where things were not well. Just laying on the, frankly ugly, bed though wasn’t going to help me, so I blinked hard to keep the tears at bay and sat up.Now

Chapter 40 : Bathed In Moonlight

Eleonore’s POV“My—my mother? You met my mother?” I was so shocked I could barely speak. I knew that Selene had made a deal with my father but why—why did she know my mother? Just how long had she been planning this? “Don’t look so surprised. I’ve lived long enough to meet a lot of people. Your mother though—when I realized she was going to have you, oh, I was so excited. I finally found another soul with multiple mates. Someone who was going to have so MUCH vitality for me to take.”I felt sick to my stomach, listening to her talk, but I couldn’t speak as Selene continued, recounting everything.“The first time I’d been overconfident, far too young and those mutts trying to protect their mate got the better of me and she ended up dying. So I decided I’d be smarter the next time around. I’d bide my time and when I found another I wasn’t going to let them slip through my fingers, your mother certainly tried though.”Her words and the thick curling streaks of smoke choked me,
