Chapter 31

RiverI was watching the rounds at home. Zach and Jason were out and about. I told him this is something I do with my Dad and he knew it. Dad was texting me and sending me pictures of what he was snacking on. Abby made him a delicious spinach dip and I was sitting on my couch eating some Rocky Road ice cream when the 12th pick was up, then it happened. His name was called out, and selected by the Rams. He’s going back to California. My heart rammed through my chest. Erica called me a few minutes after the selection. I could hear them all cheering. Then I became blue…I was no longer going to see him here. This was it.I was sad yet happy for him, but that also meant a new start for Zach and I. Alec would no longer torment me with his existence.I picked up my phone and wanted to send him a text. I was conflicted with my own emotions and thoughts until I finally said, “It would be a friendly act to congratulate him.” I picked up my phone and began to type.Me: Alec, congratulations! I

Chapter 32

RiverI never told Erica about Alec saying goodbye. I wanted to keep that to myself and for good reason. She told me Jaylen was sad but happy for his friend. She’s been staying at his place for the past two weeks and things have been getting serious between them.I loved it. I hoped so much for them. He’s a great guy and my girl is awesome.A week had gone by since I last saw him and my heart still secretly hurt after that sad farewell. I don’t think there will ever be an explanation for this feeling. I anticipate as the days go by that being with Zach can change all of that. I had already prepared my luggage for our special road trip. Zach and I rented a place between Silvertone and Frisco, Colorado near the Dillon Reservoir. I was excited and anxious at the same time.Zach read me like a book and knew that something felt off, but I played it out blaming my hormones. I wasn’t lying, my period was going to start sometime next week and Zach was dreading it.Tonight we were going to the

Chapter 33

Third Person POV - Day 1She rode her black beauty far away from it all. Her music was loud in her helmet. There would be no one to stop her. After saying goodbye to the man she fell in love with, she thought Zach would be forever, but instead, he sliced her heart into tiny pieces. There was no healing from that. Not now, not in a while. Before she left Turner Falls, she changed into her gear and set to keep going North to the mountains. Hours had gone by and it was getting late. She had already passed up the Kansas state line and was close to Wichita when she finally decided to stop and rest. She got food and booked a room close to the main road. Her Father was on her mind. He may not be aware of what happened but she’s always had a close relationship with him. However, right now, all she needed was to eat and get some rest for the long ride tomorrow that waited for her. It’s not easy sitting on a motorcycle for that long. Meanwhile…***Flashback to last night back at campus***Afte

Chapter 34

Third POV - Day 3River woke up refreshed today. She enjoyed her night with the sexy biker prince. He was sweet with her and talked about so many things distracting her from her problems. He had a girl back home in California and was out here in Deadwood, South Dakota, enjoying a summer cruise. One thing she realized was that the small town had several casinos around including the hotel she was staying at. When she went downstairs to check out, she was shocked to see how early most people were already gambling. It was unbelievable how late in the evening and early people gambled on those machines. She decided to meet with Damon this morning before she headed South to Colorado. They met by the gas station close to her hotel to say goodbye. Damon was intrigued by River. He admired her strength, intelligence, fierceness, and beauty. If he wasn’t with his girl, he would have loved to have met her before even if she was 8 years younger than him. However, he loved his girl and River’s true

Chapter 35

Third Person POV - Day 4*BEEP* Please leave a name and phone number after this message…*BEEP*Kyle almost threw his phone at the wall. “Abby, she’s not answering!” He shouted in frustration.“Something happened! My heart tells me something is wrong. Everything inside me says she’s not okay!” He snapped, getting up from his bed.Abby bit her bottom lip nervously. She was beginning to think he was right. No matter the time, River always called or texted her Father. She didn’t know what to tell him.“Have faith, wait and see honey if she calls. If not, we will go out there. I’m getting worried too. Let’s hope she calls you soon and you can gripe at her all you want. Then tell her you love her.”__________Hours passed and nothing. He didn’t know what to do and was becoming very impatient. He couldn’t call Erica because River didn’t have her number, so why make her worry? The day came and went. He hadn’t heard from her and he felt anxious to the bone. He took a Tylenol for his headache an

Chapter 36

JaylenEver feel like your life is going perfectly well? Like it’s too good to be true? Like the calm before the storm? At first, everything was fine until two days ago. I’m usually not an intuitive person, but days felt like something wasn’t right and still all seemed okay. I even called my Mother just to make sure everything was alright on that side of town. To my relief, it was.I didn’t want to alarm Erica with how I was feeling so I tried my best to mask the feeling. It was lunchtime and we were out eating with Jason and his girlfriend. We didn’t invite Zach since he was brooding terribly. He became unbearable to be around drowning himself with alcohol. We were enjoying a nice lunch at Pluckers Wing Bar, which has now become one of my favorite places for wings when all of a sudden Erica’s ringtone went off. By the look on her face, she didn’t want to decline whoever was calling so she quickly answered.“Mr. Barlowe! Is everything okay, did Riv–” She suddenly became quiet, not eve

Chapter 37

JaylenThe chairs in the waiting room were beginning to feel uncomfortable, which reminded me that we needed to find a place to stay soon at least for tonight. Tomorrow I would worry about finding a place to lease or rent for the meantime because I don’t know how long we are going to stay here.I got up from those dreadful chairs. Find You by Ruelle was playing and it was making my mood grow more pessimistic. I checked the time and realized I needed to call Alec. He needs to know.I leaned over to whisper in Erica’s ear, “Baby, I’ll be right back. I need to call Alec.” With red puffy eyes, she nodded.Alec loves River and he wouldn’t forgive me if I let a day go by without letting him know of this tragedy.I stepped outside and the cool breeze hit my face. I love the climate out here. It’s definitely different from Texas. My allergies haven’t acted up and I haven’t sneezed once since I got here.I take my phone out of my pocket and click on his contact. We’ve spoken very little, but I

Chapter 38

RiverI hear my name. I feel like I know that voice. I shake my head and feel something crawling in my veins. What is this feeling? I slowly open my eyes to a stunning sapphire sky. I’m lying on my back on the most beautiful pasture ever. Sunshine surrounds me, warming my skin. The birds are chirping and the wind is blowing a delicious breeze.“How did I get here?” I ask.I get up slowly and realize I feel no pain. I’m wearing a beautiful white gown and I’m barefoot. My dress flows with the wind and everything feels peaceful. This place feels calm and I can’t help but notice the gorgeous nature surrounding me. Vibrant colors of every kind illuminate differently almost like a vivid filter. As I roam the most beautiful garden I’ve ever seen, filled with fruits and flowers of all kinds, I hear the sound of water and follow it through a flowery field. The rippling flow gets louder and I stop when I see this amazing white, frothy cascade falling into a river. It was crystal-clear water. Yo

Chapter 39

KyleIt’s been a while since I felt nervous and right now, I’m sweating bullets. I was so tense, I could feel the knots forming in my back and neck. I don’t know how my baby girl will react to the news of her losing almost two years of memory, but I guess it’s better than losing a decade or her identity completely.“Hey smalls, what’s going through that mind of yours?” I tentatively ask.“I don’t know, Dad.” She palmed her forehead. “I’m so confused. I don’t remember getting in a wreck and then you said earlier ‘when I was a senior’. It just doesn’t make sense to me. Please tell me what’s going on.” She implored, knitting her eyebrows.“Okay, but I need you to let me talk and let me finish. It’s important, smalls, that you listen to me carefully and know that what I’m about to say is the truth. You know I wouldn’t lie to you, right?” She nodded carefully.I dragged a chair close to her bed and held her hand. “Baby, I know this isn’t going to make sense to you but you had an accident wi

Chapter 40

AlecI quietly watched River knowing her mind was racing with probing thoughts. I didn’t ignore the way she peered at Zach wondering why the pretty boy was keeping his distance. I can’t say I didn’t love the way Mr. Barlowe threatened him about confessing anything to River about what happened because he damn well deserved it.When I first met him, I witnessed his jealous, angry, and possessive traits when it came to her. He even yelled at her in front of me. I wouldn’t have done that to her, not River. When you find a girl like her, you cherish her and not take her for granted. My thoughts went back to the time when Erica said, “I don’t think Zach will let her go, not now, not ever.” Those words struck a chord in my heart, but now the tables have turned.I gave her a chance at happiness with him. I wanted to see her happy even if it meant losing her. I know I was late at the time, but now, right this very second, everything has changed. There is no doubt in my mind that she is mine an
