Chapter 71

Kylan It had been so long since I've had a chance to really rest that I almost forgot that I had other duties to attend to. This whole business with Joanna and her gang had gotten me on a one track mind for quite some time now. Which meant I had ended up neglecting my company, something that Cole made sure to call to my attention any chance he got. Even though I had told him about the mafia's existence, I hadn't given him the full details just yet. As I got up from my bed with the intention of opening my curtains to let in the fresh morning sun, the memory of the call I received last night replayed itself in my head. It had only been a few days since I wiped out the Viper Gang, but fate still refuses to let me rest easy. Christopher's lawyers were back again, and now claimed to have tangible evidence against me. Something tangible enough that the judge had called me and my lawyers back to court for the next trial. The good thing about this was that Cole had not sounded worrie

Kylan "Cole." "Kylan?" "Before we leave for the court, call in my secretary and have her pick out the documents belonging to those that are already trying to betray us." Cole met my eyes, and a small smile curved his lips when he saw the concealed fury in my expression. "I can already tell how much this place missed having you around. Yeah, I got what you said. Now, what are we going to do about the court case?" I cast the documents in front of me one final disdainful look before shelving the thought aside. I would deal with it later, but for now I had a more pressing issue to take care of. "What do we know so far?" I asked. Cole leaned back in his chair and glanced at the set of black marbles on my desk. "There isn't much information to be honest. The heat only came after that rat Phillip Gaines came here and snooped around. He never saw the private archives though, and as for the records he was able to look at, I had already scrubbed those ones clean. My guess is th

Chapter 73

Kylan Just like the court, the city harbor was not a place individuals like me frequented. But this time I had taken a bit of effort to use a different car since driving a Camaro into a port would not be very normal. And for what I had planned, subtlety was important. As I got closer, the fresh scent of the water filled the air around. I passed through the security checkpoint with nothing more than a single look at the officers at the post. Although they looked like regular law enforcement, I knew that was not the case. Ports like this one existed at multiple points along the city's coastline, and none of them were owned by the city's government despite what the people might think. Each of the ports were owned and managed by private corporations who would then lease out the structures to the government to use for import and export, all at a price completely dictated by them. This sort of behind-the-scenes collaboration made it difficult to determine who exactly held the ruling

Chapter 74

KylanI reached my company's building within thirty minutes. One of the valets approached me as I pulled over, the young man's professional expression morphing into shock when he saw the head of the company coming out of an unfamiliar car. Before I got further than a couple of steps forward, I noticed Diana's black Mustang parked at the corner of the building. "Hey," I called out to the young man, snapping him back to reality. "How long has the car been out here there?" "A little over an hour sir," he answered respectfully. "Your sister came by looking for you, and when she learned that you were out, she decided to wait until you got back." I almost frowned when I heard that. I never asked Diana to come by today, so what could she be doing here? Regardless, I was going to find out soon enough since she was still here. Leaving the door of the car open behind me, I tossed the keys to the valet and told him to keep it. The young man's eyes widened in surprise as he tried to stam

Chapter 75

Katarina With Kylan at work, things got really boring at home. Diana was not being very nice, and I had no idea what I could possibly discuss with Festus. He seemed like a chill guy, but he wasn't exactly the type of person I could have fun with. He was always serious, professional and never stepped out of his official act. I left my room and headed down to the living room where Diana was seated. She seemed invested in what she was watching on the screen, and barely noticed my presence as I stepped into the room. She only came to realize that there was someone else in the room with her when I settled beside her on the couch. Her eyes slowly drifted towards my position, and all of a sudden she seemed uninterested in continuing the series playing on the screen. Her attention was now focused on her phone, and she didn't say a word to me despite the two of us being in the same room. The usual Diana would have welcomed me with a smile, possibly offered to make me a drink if I was u

Chapter 76

Kylan As the heat from the failed lawsuit from my brother died down, I found myself getting back into gear back at the office. As I had expected and intended, word of what happened to Georg back at the docks spread around very quickly. It did not take long before some of the investors who had been having second thoughts about remaining with my company, began to show their renewed interest in working with us. As always though, there were a few who remained adamant, thinking that this was only a brief moment of respite from a dying giant. I had every intention of proving them wrong, and then making them pay. My first step was a total rearrangement of authority in the company. As I went through the records myself, I realized that while it had been my absence from the office that had slowed down business, the actions of some of my managers and officials had also be been detrimental as well. The amount of misdirected and misused funds was so immense that it was honestly quite in

Chapter 77

Kylan As I worked on the files, I could not help but wonder what exactly had gotten into Diana recently. While she and I had been quite close growing up, she had never been so expressive with her actions and thoughts. I had been relieved back when she had come to help me out with Katarina and everything that had been going on then. But after I had dealt with the Viper gang, I had expected her to return back to handling her own matters. Instead she had stuck around and had even gotten closer to Katarina. That was a good thing as far as I was concerned though. If the woman I loved and my sister were getting along, I had no reason to complain. Diana's newfound interest in the company's matters was the only thing that just seemed out of place. Not to mention that she seemed to have a lot of free time on her hands lately. I could not remember having interacted with her so much as I had over the past week. Just two days ago, she had invited herself as my plus-one to an art exhi

Chapter 78

Katarina Once again I was left alone at home. I had listened and heard when Kylan left the house, and shortly after Diana's car drove out of the premises. I was left alone once more, and had completely lost appetite for the food before me. It was becoming exhausting sitting around all day and doing nothing. And thanks to Kylan always being out every time, I hadn't even had the opportunity to discuss my decision to start working. I got out of my room to return the food back to the kitchen. The smell had begun to make me feel nauseous, and I didn't want that anymore. Bored, I toured the house, moving from room to room and checking out anything that caught my attention. However, it was not enough. The clock was ticking especially slow today, and it was slowly driving me insane. Left with no other choice, I dressed up and left the house for the first time in a while. I needed it, being held up in one place was definitely not good for my physical and mental health. I was

Chapter 79

KylanAt some point, I was starting to wonder if these papers were somehow multiplying when I wasn't looking. I had already long lost count of the number of hours I had spent behind this desk, working my mind and body to their limits in an effort to get through the files on my desk. It was probably late by now, and I had lost track of time. But yet, as I looked at the stacks across the black wooden surface, it was as if I had yet to make a single dent. I looked down at the document right in front of me, a complex ledger that was detailing a pending transaction of a high enough level of importance that it required the signature of the highest power in the company. I quickly read through it, putting my advanced processing skills obtained through hundreds of hours of effort and experience. It did not take me long to go through the entire document, finding it suitable before I moved to sign at the right places. Just before I could pick up the next document, my phone lit up with

Chapter 80

Kylan Diana answered the call on the second ring, and I gave her a short explanation of the situation. The more I tried to say, the more it seemed as if my heart was about to shatter within my chest. I ended up leaving the call halfway when my voice began to waver, my grief pushing me to tears that I had not shed in as long as I remember. I sat there, as lifeless as a stone statue, with a multitude of thoughts flashing through my mind. No matter how I looked at the situation, I could only see the many ways I had fallen short of the things I should have done. But there were all the things I had failed at. Everything had been going so well before now, so how could I have made such a terrible oversight? Had my determination to make everything right caused me to be blind to what had been right in front of me? I honestly had no idea how long it took Diana to arrive. I was so out of it that I barely even heard the front door open and close. She called out my name twice, but I had n
