Chapter 41

KatarinaI could help but feel like Jerome was slowly beginning to pull away from me. He was always lost in his thoughts all the time, and barely gave me any attention since he came back. He was constantly busy, or occupied with something important, one that he would never tell me. I had no idea what had changed, nor did I know what I had done wrong. He seemed like a completely new person ever since he came back, and I was yet to get used to this part of him. I wanted to confront him about it, but felt that it might be too early. Perhaps he was just mad about something, and it was probably best to let him handle his internal conflicts first before jumping to conclusions. After all, it's only been two days since he came back."Should I make lunch for the both of us? You haven't eaten since morning." I asked in an attempt to start up a conversation with Jerome, but as expected he quickly shut me down with a simple wave of his head. "Don't bother yourself, I'll find something to eat

Chapter 42

KatarinaI didn't feel like going back home, not after everything that had transpired between Jerome and I. I was still angry, and he had been calling me all day, but I didn't answer. However, staying out all night wasn't an option for me. If we had been staying at the hotel, I might have just left for my apartment. However, Jerome was at the apartment, and I was certain he wasn't going to be leaving anytime soon. Tired and exhausted from hiding all day, I decided it was probably best to return home and talk things out with Jerome. Perhaps I had reacted a little too harshly, and should have tried to talk to him more before storming out of the house. With a deep breath, I finally came to the conclusion of going back home. This was our first fight, and it was probably best to keep it from escalating. Flagging down the next taxi, I gave the driver my address and settled into the back seat, my mind heavy with thoughts, while my whole body was exhausted from the day's work. The city

Chapter 43

Kylan I stared in horror at the sight before me. The Christopher that I had brushed off as a regular one had turned out to be my brother, and now I was ridiculed with regret. However, now was not the moment to worry about regrets. I needed to take Lisa out of here more than anything, but I couldn't move even if I wanted to. Christopher had a gun with him, and it was aimed right at me. Makayla on the other hand stood aside, a wicked grin spread across her face. I couldn't say I was surprised to see her, but I was definitely shocked that she was working with Christopher. I thought she would be wiser to realize that Christopher was not going to help her. He only cared about himself, but Makayla had proven once again that I always gave her too much credit. She was not smart, and now I was convinced. "Christopher? What are you doing here? What's the meaning of all this?" It was Lisa who did the questioning. She was very obviously oblivious to Christopher's true identity, and she still

Chapter 44

Kylan It felt as though my world was crumbling, and there was nothing that I could do to save it. Lisa was on the floor crying her eyes out, while Christopher stood aside, his gun still pointed at me, and his face bright with a diabolical smile. He was enjoying every second of torturing me, and he was clear he didn't have any intentions of stopping any time soon. "I'm sorry you have to find out this way, Katarina. But the man you love so much, is none other than the person you rejected months ago." "That's enough! Just say what you want and get out already! You've said enough already." I thundered without any ounce of fear in my bones at the moment. I couldn't care less if the nuzzle of the gun was millimeters away from my head. All I wanted at this moment was for Makayla and Christopher to just disappear from the face of the earth. I despised the two of them, and I never wanted to see them ever again. Christopher's grin widened as he lowered the gun slightly, though still

Kylan I thought I'd feel pain, but I didn't. It was probably because I was dead, corpses can't feel pain, could they? No, I wasn't dead, at least not yet. There was no pain, and I could still see light simmering through the window even with my closed eyes. But then again, Christopher had fired, so what did he hit? Terrified, and curious, I opened my eyes to meet Makayla in a tug of war with Christopher. She might be on his side, but she clearly wasn't okay with him Killing me. The first shot had pierced through the window, and only heaven knows who or what it had hit. "What do you think you're doing, Makayla? Have you officially lost your mind?" Christopher inquired with a suspicious look on his face. He clearly wasn't happy with the fact that Makayla was getting in his way, and he was evidently disgusted by the fact that she had come to my defense. "This wasn't part of the plan. You said you wouldn't kill any of them, so what exactly are you doing? If you kill him, everybod

Chapter 46

Katarina I didn't know what to say or do at this point. Everything was so overwhelming, and even my thoughts had become too heavy for me to bear. I needed rest from everything that had just happened, and I didn't want to have to deal with all the questions that were being thrown at me at the moment. Work had already torn me down, and after everything that had just happened, the last thing I wanted to deal with was this. "Excuse me, please." I muttered to the policeman questioning me. He nodded and I immediately took that chance to run away and hide up in my room. This was too much for me, the lies, the revelations, everything was just too much. "Lisa—" I heard Christopher, or rather Kylan call out my name. He was already in the room, but I didn't want to talk, nor was I in the mood to listen to anything he had to say at the moment. "My name is Katarina. You can call me by that name now." I corrected him before turning away from his gaze. "Can we talk about what happened

Chapter 47

KatarinaI met Kylan in the living room. His eyes were glued to the screen before him, but I could tell that he wasn't paying attention to a single thing that was happening before him. He seemed confused, lost, and his eyes were heavy with guilt. I felt sad just watching him sit down with such a helpless demeanor. However, I knew better than to fall for his tricks. He was clearly a master of deceit, and I would be a fool to believe anything coming from him. "Lisa—" Kylan paused as though he had choked on his own breath. "Katarina, you're up?!" He corrected himself before rising from his seat ecstatically. It was clear he had been waiting for me since the second I told him that I needed rest. And from the look of things, he hadn't gotten any rest himself. There were heavy bags under his eyes, and if I didn't know better, I would have concluded that Kylan had cried. It didn't matter, even if he did cry, it probably wasn't for me. It was probably because he had just lost his sister

Chapter 48

KatarinaThe entire house felt so cramped after that conversation, and I couldn't help but question myself if I had made the right decisions or not. It felt right, but at the same time I couldn't help feeling like I wouldn't survive a day without Kylan. My head was a mess, and everything was slowly beginning to drive me towards insanity. I had no idea what to do at the moment, and thinking about it was giving me a migraine. Finally exhausted, I decided to return to bed. I would think about everything when the sun was up in the sky. For now, I was too broken and tired to make such critical thoughts. I climbed back into bed, pulling the covers over me in an attempt to shield myself from the overwhelming thoughts that threatened to kill me. Once in bed, I gazed on the ceiling, the silence of the room deafening in an almost eerie sense. This was the most quiet my night have been since Kylan and I got together, and it was disturbing in a sense that I couldn't explain. I closed my eyes

Chapter 49

KatarinaIt took a while for Joanna to get to my apartment, but I was happy she did. I honestly didn't expect her to come to my aid so quickly, she was kind, and I was happy that we were friends. I had a lot to tell her, but first, I owed her an apology. "I'm sorry, Joanna. I'm sorry I left without saying anything to you." I was in tears as I spoke. It was wrong of me to keep her in the dark about my whereabouts for so long. I had no idea what she had been through, or what she was going through at the moment. Yet, she had responded to me the moment I called out to her. However, I ignored her calls throughout the first month after I'd run away from home. I cut contact with her, but here I was seeking her help. I was pathetic, and I needed to acknowledge that. Joanna smiled, her eyes bright with forgiveness and concern. She hugged me tightly, and I couldn't help but feel more pathetic about myself. She had forgiven me in a heartbeat, and I had no idea how I was supposed to return th

Chapter 50

Katarina We shopped for an hour, and took another hour tour around the city before finally returning home. For the first time since the incident with Christopher, I felt human once again. I was smiling, and my mind wasn't constantly being tormented with sad thoughts. I was happy, and I didn't want this feeling to ever end. Exhausted from all the shopping, I collapsed onto the couch the moment we got home. Joanna on the other hand still seemed full of life, and she immediately opted to prepare lunch for the both of us. I wanted to stop her, but she didn't let me. She had already done much for me, the last thing I wanted was for her to become my own personal maid. However, Joanna and I didn't share the same mindset. She was doing all of this to help, and here I was, overthinking everything the slightest opportunity I got. "Don't worry, it's just a quick snack, I'm not making an all you can eat buffet." Joanna had dismissed when I told her it was best for us to order food. I a
