43. Friends and allies

Rayne's POVI was too excited but I was also cautious. My initial thought came back to my mind. It all seemed too good to be true. What if it was a trap? What if Elliot was behind this, trying to lure us into a false sense of security and power against him?"I know what you're thinking," Jessica said, knowing what I was thinking about by reading my expression. "But in my opinion, this Kenneth of a guy seems genuine, Ma'am. And even if it is a trap, we have to take the risk. We can't let Elliot win and you know that" "You're right. Let's meet up with him first of all and see what he has to offer. But we'll be cautious, and we'll be prepared for anything."Jessica smiled. "Alright ma'am, let me get my bag and pack up my things ""Sure, I'll be out in a moment " I said already starting to put my desk in order. I just hoped that this Kenneth Jones of a man was a serious man who meant business because I wasn't going to condone anyone that was going to waste my time and he better not be li

112. Strong resolve

Rayne's POVWe were officially going to have our first meeting with the police team that morning and we had woken up extra early to prepare so we don't go late. We had just finished getting ready and we're about to leave the house when Dad called both Nathan and I back,"There's something I'll like to tell you both before we meet with the police this morning" he said and we both looked at each other before returning our gaze back to him,"This is something that I would have told you both sooner but I didn't think it was that important in the fight but now that the police are about to be involved, it's just right I tell you so you don't hear it from them first when I know about it already" he said and I was confused. What was he talking about? Is this another secret that he has been hiding from us?"What is it Dad?" I asked and the silence in the room stretched out for a minute before he let out a deep sigh and started speaking,"You know when we were looking for you, Rayne, your siste

113. Falling Into The Trap

Rayne's POV It was bad enough. I had to endure all of Zia's tactics, but kidnapping my son was the last line. It was weird to have Dad's support, but I needed it. “Are you okay, ma'am?” The driver asked calmly, bringing me back from my thoughts. I shook my head as I tried to compose myself. “Yes, I am fine. Do you mind stopping here for a second? I need to get a cup of coffee.” “Sure, ma'am.” He answered and stopped the car at the side of the road. My heels croaked on the smooth road as I got down.“Hold on, ma'am. I should get it. Your father instructed me to keep a close watch on you, considering everything happening. Please, let me get it. I promise it won't take long.” He pleaded. His tone was calm, and I could sense fear. He didn't want to lose his job, and I understood. “It's just coffee. Starbucks is just there.” I answered, trying to argue my way out a little. The driver got out of the car, walking to the side when I sat, my left leg still out of the vehicle. His hands

114. Danger Dash

Rayne's POV“Oh my God!” I screamed in panic as the car maneuvered through the busy expressway. If I kept up with my screaming, Elvis and I might go deaf. My phone rang, but I was too busy being scared to check. I grabbed the seat belt and fixed it around my waist as I pushed it on the buckle. The cars behind us were relentless in their pursuit. Whoever was behind this wanted me. I glanced at my ringing phone, and Nathan's name showed. Without any delay, I picked. If this was our last time, I had to use it well. “Nathan, I…” I spoke, interrupting him. “Rayne, where are you?” He asked. He has noticed the fear in my voice. “On the road. I…I don't know. Some cards are chasing us. I got a call threatening me, and Elvis is trying to get us to safety. Haa!” I screamed as Elvis narrowly swerved the car in time, avoiding an oncoming truck. “It's going to be okay. Send me your location. I'll find you guys. No matter what, stay with him. He'll protect you.” Nathan said as I nodded. “Yes,

115. Need To Run

Rayne's POV“Ma'am,” A voice called me. “Rayne, wake up. Get up.” I heard Nathan's voice faintly call to me. My eyes twitched as I slowly opened them. I groaned as the pain shot through my head. “Ugh, Good lord!” I groaned. There was no one. I had imagined Nathan was there. My vision was blurry, and it adjusted after a few seconds. I could see more clearly now as I realized I was stuck in the seat. I groaned as I slowly lifted my hand to unbuckle the seatbelt. I slowly crawled from the car as I lay on the side of the road. My head spun, and my body ached. I tried to sit up, but a sharp pain shot through my body, making me gasp. My sides felt like they were hit with a log of wood. I slowly crawled, and a little strength crept into me as I tried to sit up again. I searched around with my eyes. The car had smoke coming from it. It was in ruins. My heart pounded fast as I couldn't find Elvis. When I was about to lose hope, my eyes caught his figure lying a few feet away. His body wa

116. Stand With A Friend

Rayne's POVThe tears welled up in my eyes as I continued running. I heard them struggle, and a blast stopped me in my tracks. “Oh no,” I murmured as I turned to look from a distance. Elvis was on his knees, and the leader was pointing a gun at him.I couldn't run as I knew Elvis' life was on the line. I didn't care what promise he made to my father, but I wasn't going to watch him die. “Kill him,” I heard the leader say, and my whole body grew tense. “Wait!” I shouted as I began to run back towards Elvis. Elvis turned around, his eyes rested in defeat. He thought I would take the chance to escape. “No, ma’am. Why did you come back?!” His voice reeked of pain. “Let him go. It's me you want,” I commanded, but the men laughed. “Well, if it's not the little princess. You should have listened to him and not play the hero.” The man said as his face contoured into an evil smile. “The orders were to bring her. Finish him. He's of no use to us.”“No,” I begged as I covered Elvis with m

117. Saving A Friend

Rayne's POV“Lady, this isn't a hospital. It's an animal clinic. You can't bring him in here,” he said as he rushed over and knelt beside Elvis, quickly checking his wound. “We don't know where we are or how to get there,” I answered, hoping he wouldn't chase us out. “We need to get him to a hospital. I need…” he began, but I held his hand, and my eyes begged him to listen to me. “Please, doctor. He might not make it. Whoever after us would get to us before we got to the hospital. Please help me save him. Please.” I begged. The doctor looked at me, and back at Elvis, and back at my teary face. “Okay, lock the door. Turn off the front lights. We can't have anyone coming in,” he said, and I nodded. I did everything he asked me to. I turned the front lights off, locked the door, and shut the windows. I pulled the curtain, making sure I didn't make room for any mistakes. I helped the doctor lift Elvis on a stretcher and then to the bed. Elvis' skin looked pale as I stood frozen in th

118. Help At Last

Rayne's POV“Geez, I haven't called Nathan. He must be worried sick and be looking for me. Dad must be having a hard time. I can’t believe I forgot about my family and my baby.” I thought.“Uhm, Alex. Do you mind if I ask for one more favor?” I asked, pleading with my eyes. “Sure, do you need to make a phone call?” He asked as soon as he nodded. “How did you know?” I asked, surprised. “Just a sixth sense. Here, Go ahead,” he said, pulling out his phone. “Yeah, thank you,” I replied, taking the phone. I dialed Nathan’s number, and my anxiety grew as his line rang. I rang for a few more seconds, and Nathan picked up. I felt so much relief. “Nathan, baby. It's me, Rayne,” I said, my voice shaking slightly with excitement. “Rayne, sweetie. Thank God you're okay. We found your phone. I hope you're safe. Where are you?” Nathan asked, his voice loud over the phone.“Uhm, I am safe. We were ambushed. Elvis saved me. He was shot. The bullet’s out, but he's unconscious now. I am at a ve

119. Finding Clues

Rayne's POVDad led me to the three-seat sofa in the parlor, and Nathan followed behind, stopping a few steps from the door.  Dad looked at me with concern, and I could see he had stressed himself with worry. I felt guilty for putting him through all this.  “Rayne, darling. Please, don't scare me like that again,” Dad spoke with a cracky voice.  I hugged him back, feeling his warmth of love. He let me go to stare at me again. “I'm sorry, Dad. I didn't mean to scare you. I wasn't careful, and I almost didn't listen to Elvis when he stopped me from going to the coffee shop alone.” I said. “Oh no, darling. It was never your fault.

120. Confusing Spot

Rayne's POV  “Sweet Lord, what is that pounding sound?” I murmured as I placed my hand on my forehead. My head hurts. It felt like I was spinning in a circle. I rubbed my eyes and woke up in a daze.  “What the hell…” I said, looking confused as I found myself in an office. It was pretty different from mine. The office was large and decorated with exquisite mini statues and classic curtains. Everything was in gray and black, giving it a mature color yet eerie vibe.  The room was silent, and the only sound I could hear was my ragged breathing. “What was happening to me? I was in Nathan's arms a few seconds ago. Was I dreaming? But it didn't seem like one. It felt real.” My thoughts raced in my head.
