11. That was different

“Jamie?” She said in disbelief. “What are you doing here?”  Annoyance surfaced on his features as he stepped closer toward her. With his torso pressing against the counter, he leaned in so he could rest his forearms on the counter before his eyes arrested hers.  “Who was that, Emma?”  She frowned, momentarily intimidated by his intensity. Although she had no reason to feel that way, she felt as if she was caught doing something illegal. “Who?”  “The guy who just tried to get into your pants.”  Her mouth fell open. The audacity he had! “He didn’t try to-“ S

12. Best shot

When it was past midnight, the alarm in Elena’s mind went off.  Her best friend and roommate was not answering her calls nor was she texting her back. The last she heard of her was in the afternoon after her lunch, when she told her that she would be headed home right after work. This was very unusual of her, as Emma always made it a point to inform her whenever her plans changed or she was running late.  Something was not right, she knew it. But what were her options right now? She didn’t have her boss’ contact number. Any friends Emma had were Elena’s, and she wouldn’t hangout with them by herself without the latter, so there was no question of calling anybody else. Elena’s best shot would be to go out and inquire, but it was not safe for her to do so yet. But did she have a choice? Her

13. Ring a bell?

The crackling noise of the fire filled the cold air around Emma as her mind slowly drifted back into reality. As she straightened her head, an acute pain shot up her neck, making her wince. However, as she took notice of her surroundings she realized that it was the last thing she should be worrying about. Emma panicked as she found her arms not by her side but wrapped around a tree trunk behind her, with a thick rope running all over her body and tied around the wrist. She tried to fight through its confines but to her dismay, she had little luck in escaping. Before she could try again, she felt footsteps approaching her from her right. Stilling in her position, she whipped her head to find a couple of men walking toward her.  “Took you long enough.” One of them said as he came to stand before her.

14. I don't know

Within minutes, the ties around her hands were loosened and her body was finally set free. Air rushed into her lungs like never before and she fell to the ground in exhaustion. She watched as the bruises around her wrists vanished under the dim light, taking away the physical pain caused by it.  She instinctively looked at the two men that put her in this position, and somehow, watching them lay lifeless on the ground didn’t make her feel any better. If anything, she felt sick knowing she was the reason they were dead.  She felt Jamie’s hands on her shoulder then, demanding her attention. As she looked up, she found his eyes running over her face in angst and she thought she detected new found concern in them. “Jesus, look at you.” He said,

15. Don’t be difficult

Elena’s eyes were still sealed with sleep when she opened the front door. She couldn’t remember when she managed to fall asleep on the couch while awaiting for any news about her friend, but surely seeing her in person sprung her back into reality. Widening her eyes in surprise, she had to blink a couple of times in order to confirm what she was seeing was indeed true. Emma was looking at her with a relieved smile, with Jamie standing behind her. “Emma!” She cried before pulling her friend in for a hug. Elena felt her friend’s arms around her in response, clinging onto her like she would be taken away from her yet again. Her eyes inevitably found Jamie’s, and a silent note of gratitude relayed between the both. As promised, he brought her friend home in one piece, reinstating her belief that she was right in trusting him. “Thank God you’re alright!” She said as they pulled away from each other. “Are you okay?” “I am.” Emma nodded vehemently, “He saved me right in time.” “Did

16. The least I could do

Emma was silent the entire ride to her new home.  Knowing he was demanding too much of her at the moment, Jamie remained silent too. Although he hated putting her in this position, a little part of him couldn’t help but rejoice that he would now have her in his vicinity. He would no longer need any pathetic excuse to see her in the bar or constantly think about her safety. Keeping her close was definitely a decision that arose out of pure concern for her wellbeing, but there must have been a selfish part of him that craved her presence in his life. Jamie was reluctant to address his growing feelings for her as much as he thought it important to kill them. A week ago when he realized that she was his chosen one, he thought it would be easy to dismiss what he felt for her for he prioritized his mission over anything in life.

17. That's not upto him

Emma rushed to close the door as she heard footsteps approaching her. Stepping away from it, she took a seat on the mattress and pretended to be busy with her phone. After several seconds, when the door to her room still didn’t open, she let out a sigh of relief. Jamie wasn’t coming to her, after all.  Propelling back on the bed, she stared at the roof in wonder. She couldn’t ignore the conversation she’d overheard between the two friends outside. A funny feeling tugged at her heart, making her question if she indeed realized that Jamie cared about her more than he let on or if she was simply imagining things.  If Jamie was truly the beast that she imagined him to be, he would not have come to her rescue last night. He felt responsible for her, and it was the first time any man ever did so much as ca

18. Woman in distress

Emma wiped her tears away in an attempt to console herself. Clearing her throat, she was just about to speak up when his voice reached her.  “Emma.” He said in a strict tone, like a parent to a child. “Open the fucking door.”  “Go away, Jamie.” She said through a broken voice, “I want to be alone.”  For a few seconds, all she heard was silence. She was grateful that he listened to her for once and heaved a sigh of relief. However, it was cut short when she felt another knock on the door. The knocks traveled down the entire surface of the door from above downwards. When it reached her back, the resonance turned dull, and he ceased his movement at once.

19. Like you always do

The next morning when Emma woke up, Jamie was already preparing himself for a busy day. Having spent the entirety of last night working, he had little energy interacting with her when she waved him a hi in the kitchen. He was just mentally calculating what his day was going to be like when he spotted her, and caught up in his own thoughts, all he could offer to her in kindness was a nod of acknowledgement.  Although she was beginning to get more tolerable than most people he interacted with, he wished she would leave him alone at least this morning. He had an important meeting coming up and he wanted his focus to be fixed only on that.  “Any news about my job?” She asked, leaning onto the counter top.  He ignored how she lazily rubbed the sleep off

20. It's settled then

Jamie punched the elevator button as he came to stop in front of it. Every time he met his parents, he realized why it was that he preferred to stay away from home. Six years ago, their lives had changed for ever, and none of them ever remained the same. As time progressed, they grew further apart from each other, emotionally more so than physically. His parents were still together, but he doubted their love for each other persisted. His mother was clearly unhappy with how things were in the family, and oftentimes, Jamie suspected that she felt the most lonely. His father took care of all the pack matters and kept her away from duties, for she wasn’t capable of separating emotion from any situation. Owing to this lack of competence, Maria only had time for herself and no idea how to spend it. Perhaps if she had better things to worry about, sh
