PROLOGUE: *Accidentally met*

Cursing under my breath, I stepped into the sun, grumbling, “Why do I always get this migraine?”It was three o'clock in the afternoon, and I was heading home. The sun beat down on my head, as I trudged towards my home. I was exhausted from having worked all day. Mr. Robinson, my manager, had worked me to the bone, making sure I earned my meager pay. I felt my knuckles ache from scrubbing floors, cleaning surfaces, and washing used sheets. All I wanted right now was a few minutes of peace and quiet. As I made my way down the street, no cab was in sight. I wasn't sure if I had the energy to walk any further. My legs felt like lead, and every step was a chore. I decided to stop beside a shade and take a rest, until a cab came by. The sudden roar of the Lamborghini's engine shattered the silence, and the car flew past me with alarming speed. I yelped in terror as I held tightly to my handbag, my heart pounding in my chest. If the driver had swerved even an inch to the left, I would have

CHAPTER 001: *A sprinkle of magic*

I pushed open the cafè door and peeped in.There was mom, standing by the counter, conversing with a certain silver-blonde haired, middle aged woman I couldn't recognize."Okay babe, gotta go now. I'm home." I said to Reuben who was also preparing for a class. "Ok. Talk to you right after the class." Reuben hung up. He was my boyfriend. We had known each other since high school. He was in college studying business while I wanted to be a chef. Since mom couldn't afford to send me to the culinary school I wanted, right away, I'd been working as a hotel cleaner at one of the hotels close by, to save up for my tuition. Reuben had been working hard too, studying and working odd jobs on the side. We both had big dreams, and were determined to make them come true. But sometimes it felt like we were worlds apart, even though we were still together."You're back." Mom said, regarding me as I stopped before both of them. "You look so exhausted." She added. "Yes, I had a really stressful day."

CHAPTER 002: *First day at work*

"That was wonderful."I looked up to see mom approaching. She looked just as happy as I was. We'd both suffered to make ends meet, just so that we could live a normal life. Her cafè wasn't even picking up. “How come you never told me about your friend Laura?" I asked standing up. Mom shrugged, smiling as she spoke, “She lives in Italy. But I guess she's back now.”“In less than thirty minutes, I've gotten an amount of money I've not even been able to save. Now, I'm sure I'll enroll in a college next year. My dreams are coming true, Mom.” I exclaimed, smiling as a single tear dropped down my cheek. This is so unbelievable.”“It's lovely." Mom answered by picking up a jar of milk and a glass. “It's amazing how things can turn around within a twinkle of an eye.” She said, pouring some milk into the glass and pushing it towards me.I stared at mom and then the glass of milk in her hand.“You complained of a headache, right? Have this and some burgers.” She said placing the milk before me

CHAPTER 003: *Meeting Stephan Gray(1)*

Before Laura’s driver arrived that morning, I had called the hotel manager to request permission to stay home due to illness. Although he agreed, he'd threatened to deduct it from my salary at the end of the month. Although I'd been managing for months, the manager was a cruel man, who enjoyed watching his employees work tirelessly for meager wages. If it weren't for the kindness of Laura Gray, I would have been trapped in a cycle of poverty and hardship. I was grateful for her generosity and saw it as a chance to change my life for the better. She was indeed a life saver.“Here you are.” Azula gesticulated as I walked into the room after her. Just like the other parts of the house I'd seen already, my bedroom was large, beautiful and luxurious. I was grateful for a spacious room and an ultra large TV.“Thank you." “You're welcome, Scarlett." Azula responded. “If you need anything, you can talk to me, or any of my colleagues. We'll be glad to help. Feel at home.” She added, though it

CHAPTER 004: *Meeting Stephan Gray(2)*

I gasped, “You?!”Laura's eyes darted from my face to his, confusion and bewilderment engraved on her features. She shook her head slightly, as if trying to clear her thoughts, and then blurted out, "Excuse me, can someone please explain what's going on here?” She asked, intrigued."Hmm—seems we've met each other already," he said, giving me a smirk.I regarded him for a long, long time, trying to recall the whole incident, if I'd in any way talked badly at him. And it seemed I did not.“Is this true, Scarlett?" Laura asked, staring at me with eyes lit up with interest. “I would like to know more about it." She said, “Well, it wasn't pleasant at all." He said, shoving his hands into the pockets of his slacks as he moved over to where Laura stood.“How was it then? Pleasantly unpleasant?" Laura teased.“Well, I nearly ran her over with my car, at Madison avenue. I wasn't thinking. I'd just been trying to clear my head after an argument with Leah. You know how it goes Mom.” He explained

CHAPTER 005: *At the Mets*

“Wow…” I gasped, amazed at the sight before me. As I walked through the grand entrance of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, I felt a sense of awe and wonder, the vastness of the space- with its marble floors and towering ceilings, made me feel like I was stepping into a different world. An attractive young man in uniform, who happened to be one of the attendants, walked up to me, by the entrance, and greeted me as he handed me a ticket. “Hello, Welcome to the Mets.” He said very friendly. “Thanks." I answered, with my gaze literally flying everywhere.“What’s your name, so that I can write it on your ticket?” He asked, taking out a pen from his breast pocket and setting it poised against the ticket in his hand. “I'm Scarlett Lawson." I answered, watching him sign swiftly on the ticket and handing it to me. As I took the ticket, I felt a sense of anticipation, as if I was about to embark on an exciting journey through the history of art.He nodded back in response, “So, what exactly a

CHAPTER 006: *Trouble*

“Hello Marissa," I said as the little girl walked past to me. She seemed not to be in a good mood. But I still went ahead, “I hope you had a great day."Marissa stopped before me and glared at, "Leave me alone. I want to be left alone, Miss Scarlett!” With that, she flounced out of the sitting room, heading to her bedroom.I tried going after her, but Azula stepped into my path, speaking to me with a tone filled with venom. “Hello? She clearly doesn't want you, so you don't have to force her. Let her be!” With that said, she flounced out of the room, going after Marissa. I stood at the center of the sitting room, staring after her in shock as my cheeks turned hot red. I glanced back and forth between Jade (Who witnessed it), and Arielle(Who came to find out what Marissa wanted for dinner). They both looked away, simultaneously, making it more embarrassing. I was staring down at the floor, trying to get my little emotions under control, when I felt a soft pat on my shoulder. Lo

CHAPTER 007: *Going over the rules*

Stephen Gray was in the sitting room when I got back home with his daughter. The second I saw him, my heart made a flip because he was definitely going to know that something happened at the playground. I peeped at Marissa from the corner of my eye. She was visibly tired and still having hiccups, and one could know just by looking at her that she'd been crying before now.‘Oh no!’ I shook my head in worry as we approached him. He was sitting on the central couch, working on his laptop, with a coffee by the side stool. As we walked in, he looked up, and his eyes were all on me, and then as we advanced, his gaze shifted back and forth between his daughter and I. I was certain he noticed, because Marissa was still taking gasping breaths.More reason to worry, I didn't take permission from him when I stepped out. He must have thought we were in my room or something, the reason why he gazed at us with wonder. “Hello Mr Gray," I greeted nervously, fidgeting with my nails. He nodded in respo

CHAPTER 008: *Midnight Call*

I reached for my phone on the nightstand as it kept ringing, jolting me awake. It was the middle of the night, and I had no idea who could be calling at such an hour. As I fumbled to answer the call, I felt someone move behind me on the bed. I froze. "Where am I?" I thought to myself, trying to recall the last place I was before I fell asleep."Marissa's room?" I whispered in surprise. My eyes snapped open and I jolted up to a sitting position, grasping my phone and quickly silencing it. I looked over my shoulder to see the sleeping child who hadn't been disturbed by the noise. By now I was wide awake, my heart pounded in my chest out of fright. I adjusted, holding the phone in my hand, trying to piece together what was happening. ‘How did I fall asleep here?’ I wondered. I glanced over my shoulder at the sleeping child again, she was sleeping so soundly, seeming not to have heard the noise. "You crafty little thing," I whispered as I watched her, "You tricked me into falling asleep

CHAPTER 009: *Rules*

“I— want to get some water." I stammered. I couldn't understand why Mr Gray's presence always made me feel so uncomfortable and self-conscious. There was something mysterious about him that made me feel this way.“I instructed you to come see me after, but you flout my order. Why is that so?” He asked, looking at me, as he drummed rhythmically on the arm of the couch. “I… I'm sorry I fell asleep.” I apologized looking away.He took a quick glance at his wrist watch. “Okay. Get whatever you want from the kitchen, meet me here, I want to speak with you for a while.” He said as he picked up his glass of water, taking a sip. I nodded, tossing back some tousled strands of hair as they slipped off, entering my mouth. “Alright Mr Gray."As I walked away, very conscious of myself, I wondered how long he had been there, probably ever since the time I got back with Marissa. ‘What kind of a human being is he?’“Damn it, why do I have to feel this way!" I cursed, leaning against the kitche
