Before Laura’s driver arrived that morning, I had called the hotel manager to request permission to stay home due to illness. Although he agreed, he'd threatened to deduct it from my salary at the end of the month. Although I'd been managing for months, the manager was a cruel man, who enjoyed watching his employees work tirelessly for meager wages. If it weren't for the kindness of Laura Gray, I would have been trapped in a cycle of poverty and hardship. I was grateful for her generosity and saw it as a chance to change my life for the better. She was indeed a life saver.

“Here you are.” Azula gesticulated as I walked into the room after her. Just like the other parts of the house I'd seen already, my bedroom was large, beautiful and luxurious. I was grateful for a spacious room and an ultra large TV.

“Thank you."

“You're welcome, Scarlett." Azula responded. “If you need anything, you can talk to me, or any of my colleagues. We'll be glad to help. Feel at home.” She added, though it sounded stiff to my ears, like she meant the exact opposite of those words. I responded with a nod.

“This place is heaven.” I said, glancing around.

"Oh, please. It's clear that the background you come from is nothing compared to the luxury of this place." Azula's voice dripped with sarcasm. "You don't even know what real comfort is."

"What?” My mouth dropped open as I slowly turned to face the young woman, feeling a mix of shock and embarrassment. “What did you say?"

“Oh, pardon me. But I was just stating the obvious!" She said, giving a shrug of indifference, with a sarcastic expression etched on her face.

I walked to the violet couch by my window and slowly settled into it, feeling every word she spoke. I was flushed red with embarrassment, I should have known she was this type of person, it was etched on her face.

After a moment of thinking about it, I was finally able to snap out of it. I was used to being talked down to by my boss at work and by most of the hotel guests, so it didn't make a difference to me now, moreover, she was just a servant like myself in the Villa.

I got up from the couch and unpacked the few belongings I brought along. Laura had mentioned my occasional visits home. Because of that, I'd packed only a few clothes, undies and my toothbrush.

Once I was done unpacking, I sat down in the bed, took out my phone and dialed Reuben's line. The last time we spoke was the previous afternoon, while I was returning from work. We'd both been busy after that. So, I had so much to tell him. His phone rang a couple of times, then he answered.

“Hey Scarlett. How are you doing?" He sounded very cheerful today, I wondered what made him happy.

“Reuben love, I'm good. What about you? How are you studying?" I asked back, overwhelmed by the excited news I was about to share.

"I'm holding on fine." There came a little pause, and then he went on, “I'm sorry I couldn't call back last night, as I promised. Shit happened and it was beyond me.” He said.

I immediately got worried because he never complained. "What happened? I do hope you're as good as you sound.”

"Do not panic, I'm doing alright. Though last night, I got involved in a fight, and I had to spend the night at the cell—”

"Oh my God! What the fuck?! How did you get into a fight?!" I exclaimed, interrupting him.

“It wasn't the best experience, but I was bailed this morning by my friend's mom.”

"Reuben, you know how much I worry about you over there. What led to the fight? How come you never informed me? What if something worse happened to you?!” I prang up from the bed and paced the room.

“Inform you? Scarlett, there's no way I could involve you in that shit. Couldn't leave you worried all night.” He said, swearing under his breath.

“Even though, I can't imagine something like this happening to you and you didn't think of me first!"

"Scarlett, you don't understand these things. I'm not even in the right place to call. I gotta go right now. Talk to you la—”

"Reuben, don't you dare hang up yet. How do you want me to cope with what I've just learned of right now? Tell me, where are you right now? Are you safe? Are you alright?” I demanded answers aggressively. Reuben was the love of my life, and I couldn't imagine anything happening to him.

“I'm on the road, Scarlett, you panic too much. I promise to call back and give the full explanation, alright? Be calm.” As he spoke, I could hear voices everywhere and noises from cars.

“Alright Reuben. Please stay safe. And I'll be expecting your call.”

"Definitely. I love you.” He said, and that brought peace to my heart.

"And I love you square." I answered, feeling emotional.

When Reuben hung up, I continued to pace the room until I got myself back together. I decided to step out, and have a look at some things.

I found Laura at the dining table, gulping down breakfast. She seemed to be in a hurry. The moment she saw me, a smile broke across her lips and she urged me to go over.

“Have a seat, Arielle will get you breakfast in no time.” She gesticulated.

"Alright ma'am.”

"It's about time you dropped the ‘ma’am’ of a thing, Scarlett. I'm simply Laura.” She said as she took a bite of her bagel. “I apologize, I won't be around to show you what you're going to do. I'm running behind schedule and must be on my way.” She took the last sip of her coffee, pushed the rest away and stood up.

“We'll talk when I return, alright? Do your best for me. Watch over Marissa." She said to me over and over again, and I understood how important that was.

“Uhm… I can't find her around.” I asked, when I suddenly noticed Marissa's absence.

"She left for school, and will be getting back by 1pm.” She said, sipping her coffee, "One good thing, you can always step out to get some fresh air during Marissa's school hours, and any other time she's not around.”

"Wow. That'll give me some time to still be lending help to my mom at the cafè.” I said with a smile, grateful once again for the great opportunity Laura offered me.

“Talking about helping hands, don't you think your mom needs to employ some?" Laura asked, looking deep in thought. “I'll see what I can do about it."

"Oh my God, thank you so much ma'am…arh— Laura. I appreciate every single kindness towards my family and I.” I said, tearing up.

“Shsh—you don't have to thank me. It's okay."

“Mrs Gray. When will you abandon your habit of lateness?” A rich, resonant voice called from behind me. I spun around, my heart pounding in my chest, eager to see who had it. There, standing in the doorway, was a tall, broad-shouldered man with a striking, chiseled face. He was dressed in a flawlessly tailored suit, and he exuded an aura of power and authority. As I looked up at him, I felt a shiver of excitement run down my spine.

The moment he noticed me too, he stopped in his tracks. His brows furrowed as he took in my appearance from my head to my feet. Then, he exclaimed, “You?!”

I gasped, “You?!”Laura's eyes darted from my face to his, confusion and bewilderment engraved on her features. She shook her head slightly, as if trying to clear her thoughts, and then blurted out, "Excuse me, can someone please explain what's going on here?” She asked, intrigued."Hmm—seems we've met each other already," he said, giving me a smirk.I regarded him for a long, long time, trying to recall the whole incident, if I'd in any way talked badly at him. And it seemed I did not.“Is this true, Scarlett?" Laura asked, staring at me with eyes lit up with interest. “I would like to know more about it." She said, “Well, it wasn't pleasant at all." He said, shoving his hands into the pockets of his slacks as he moved over to where Laura stood.“How was it then? Pleasantly unpleasant?" Laura teased.“Well, I nearly ran her over with my car, at Madison avenue. I wasn't thinking. I'd just been trying to clear my head after an argument with Leah. You know how it goes Mom.” He explained

I want to be left alone, Miss Scarlett!” With that, she flounced out of the sitting room, heading to her bedroom.I tried going after her, but Azula stepped into my path, speaking to me with a tone filled with venom. “Hello? She clearly doesn't want you, so you don't have to force her. Let her be!” With that said, she flounced out of the room, going after Marissa. I stood at the center of the sitting room, staring after her in shock as my cheeks turned hot red. I glanced back and forth between Jade (Who witnessed it), and Arielle(Who came to find out what Marissa wanted for dinner). They both looked away, simultaneously, making it more embarrassing. I was staring down at the floor, trying to get my little emotions under control, when I felt a soft pat on my shoulder. Lo

The second I saw him, my heart made a flip because he was definitely going to know that something happened at the playground. I peeped at Marissa from the corner of my eye. She was visibly tired and still having hiccups, and one could know just by looking at her that she'd been crying before now.‘Oh no!’ I shook my head in worry as we approached him. He was sitting on the central couch, working on his laptop, with a coffee by the side stool. As we walked in, he looked up, and his eyes were all on me, and then as we advanced, his gaze shifted back and forth between his daughter and I. I was certain he noticed, because Marissa was still taking gasping breaths.More reason to worry, I didn't take permission from him when I stepped out. I reached for my phone on the nightstand as it kept ringing, jolting me awake. It was the middle of the night, and I had no idea who could be calling at such an hour. As I fumbled to answer the call, I felt someone move behind me on the bed. I froze. "Where am I?" I thought to myself, trying to recall the last place I was before I fell asleep."Marissa's room?" I whispered in surprise. My eyes snapped open and I jolted up to a sitting position, grasping my phone and quickly silencing it. I looked over my shoulder to see the sleeping child who hadn't been disturbed by the noise. By now I was wide awake, my heart pounded in my chest out of fright. I adjusted, holding the phone in my hand, trying to piece together what was happening. ‘How did I fall asleep here?’ I wondered. I glanced over my shoulder at the sleeping child again, she was sleeping so soundly, seeming not to have heard the noise. There was something mysterious about him that made me feel this way.“I instructed you to come see me after, but you flout my order. Why is that so?” He asked, looking at me, as he drummed rhythmically on the arm of the couch. “I… I'm sorry I fell asleep.” I apologized looking away.He took a quick glance at his wrist watch. “Okay. Get whatever you want from the kitchen, meet me here, I want to speak with you for a while.” He said as he picked up his glass of water, taking a sip. I nodded, tossing back some tousled strands of hair as they slipped off, entering my mouth. “Alright Mr Gray."As I walked away, very conscious of myself, I wondered how long he had been there, probably ever since the time I got back with Marissa. ‘What kind of a human being is he?’“Damn it, why do I have to feel this way!" I woke up with a startle and checked the time. It was 7:10 AM! “What?!” I got out of bed, slipping my feet into my moccasins. I rushed out to Marissa's room. She wasn't there and her bed was made. It looked so smooth like she didn't sleep there the previous night. She wasn't in her closet either. “6 A.M,” he said." I uttered to myself as I rushed to the sitting room, fearing the worst. “Totally useless." Azula sneered as she walked past me carrying Marissa's worn clothes.I turned to look at her, until she was out of sight. “What have I done to her that she keeps making those remarks?" I wondered. After the woman left the office, Mr. Gray gestured for me to take her seat. I sat down, placing my bag on my lap. As I glanced at my watch, I realized that Marissa would be returning any minute. And yet, I hadn't been able to accomplish any of the tasks I'd set out to do that day. I felt a sense of frustration and disappointment, knowing that my day had been a waste. Mr. Gray began to peruse the documents I had brought, and I did my best to remain composed, still and silent. My eyes dropped to the floor as I waited. My mind drifted to the thoughts of all that needed to be done: visiting my mother, resigning from my job, and gathering the ingredients Arielle had requested.Time seemed too slow as I waited, fidgeting in my chair and growing impatient. ‘Why is he taking so long?’ I wondered. ‘I have so much to do!’ I couldn't help but glance up, and when I did, I was surprised to find him staring at me. I looked up and read the name on the wall, "Gray's Corporation." And my heart made a flip. I was scared to walk through that door and meet Mr Gray. I was scared of what his employees would think, seeing me deliver documents to him. "You'll find me in the parking lot," Miguel said as he got out of the car after me. The parking lot was massive, taking up a large portion of the company's grounds. There were cars parked in every row, all neatly arranged."Alright. See you later, Miguel," I said, looking around at the impressive sight. Tall trees lined the walkway, providing shade and adding to the aesthetic appeal of the place. The building itself was magnificent, rising up into the sky for over 40 floors. “I hope he's around." I muttered to myself. With my fingers crossed, I walked through the door, hoping that Mr. Gray would be at the reception office, waiting to get his documents, or that he already sent out his secretary to fetch it from me.
