Serenity and Xander waited patiently seated in the grey BMW X5 for Enzo’s signal when Serenity suddenly broke the silence.  “Do you love her?” She questioned, catching a glimpse of the red heart emojis on Xander’s screen.  “Love? Xander crept alongside his best friend, in the distance he could see the younger Lombardi brothers making their way to their own infiltration point and Xander felt a twinge of worry for them.    “They’ll be fine.” Enzo grumbled, sensing Xander’s thoughts.    “Yeah, of course.” He responded, but the feeling he awoke with that morning had yet to dissipate.    “In position.” Matteo’s voice rang through the earpiece in their ears and Xander and Enzo shared a look.    “Remember the mission. Gathered around the large boardroom table with grave looks on their faces were the five most powerful men in the underworld and standing at the head of the table was a man who hadn’t in a million years thought he’d be standing there. “As you may have heard, a series of attacks have been staged on the Lombardi clan, one of which has resulted in the incapacitation of the Don himself. Therefore I will be taking over control of the Mafia headquarters until such time that Don Lombardi is able to return to his position.” Alexander’s announcement, as expected, sparked uproar amongst the men in the room. “That’s absurd, Don Lombardi may have named you as his underboss, but we know that was only in name. The Lombardi family is the Mafia, we all know the right to the Donship belongs to Matteo Lombardi.” Joseph Genino, also known as the first Capo, spoke. “Matteo Lombardi’s whereabouts are currently unknown. Which leaves the only surviving heir to the Lombardi dynasty, Alessia Lombardi.” Xande

Like every day for the past month, Serenity entered Lorenzo’s room with hope sparking in her heart.  “Hey Enzo.” She dropped her purse on the chair beside his bed and moved to stand in front of the window that overlooked the expansive gardens of the hospital. Across the green park where scores of people mulled, going about their business was another building that Serenity recently learnt was a rehabilitation centre- the best physical rehabilitation centre in LA.  “Today marks a month since-” She cut herself off, she had yet to say the words aloud, somehow she felt like saying them would make it real and every fibre of her body screamed in protest.  “Xander is doing good. “Why do you hate him so much anyway?” Peter sipped on his hot beverage, but his eyes watched her over the rim of his mug.  “Besides the fact that the man isn’t exactly the picture of virtue? I don’t trust him, I get the sense that he’s hiding something and Xander is too blinded to even question. Vito Costello is the only person who knew we were going to the warehouse that night.” Serenity’s eyes glared at the liquid swirling in her cup. “The same can be said for Genino and by the looks of things, there are more fingers pointing at him than Vito right now.” Peter pointed out and Serenity couldn’t help but sneer at the logic of it all.  “I still don’t trust Vito.” She mumbled moodily.
