Chapter 31

Kaiya I lie on my side, watching Bowden sleep. The bruises on his cheek and chest are completely healed. His face is relaxed, but even in his sleep, his hands are curled in tight fists around the sheets. During the remembrance, as I now know it’s called, I decided that I would try to make things a little easier for Bowden. He has all that weight on his shoulders and the last thing he needs is a mate making his life a living hell. It’s as he said. This is what I’ve been given. This is my life now. I can love him or hate him, but while hating him seems easier, loving is the better choice. I have enough hate in my heart already, I don’t have room for one more. “Kaiya?” Bowden asks without opening his eyes. “Are you all right?” “I can’t sleep.” “No,” he says and lets go of the sheets, tucking both hands behind his head, “neither can I.” “What’s your excuse?” “I have a she-wolf in my bed,” he says and abruptly opens his eyes. “That doesn’t happen as often as you probably think it do

Chapter 32

Bowden Griffin and Jaeger show up at my office for our weekly meeting just after I break my mind link with Kaiya. Her emotions are cycling faster than the spin cycle on a washing machine, and I can't keep up with her. It’s putting me more on edge than usual, and I'm still right on the brink as it is. Ordinarily, I wouldn’t check in with an emotional mate every five minutes, but after what had happened, I can’t help myself. “You're late,” I growl at my advisors as they enter. “Close the door.” I glare at Griffin while Jaeger gently closes the door. Sensing the tension between the Beta and me right away, my Gamma asks, “What’s going on?” “We had a bit of a fight,” Griffin answers. “Really?” I ask my Beta. “That’s all you’re going to say? Do you want me to tell him?” I try to soften some of my anger towards my Beta, especially after he confessed his desire to die, but I just can't bring myself to do it. Not yet. Griffin sighs and briefly tells Jaeger everything he told me last nig

Chapter 33

KaiyaBowden lets out a soft little growl that makes every hair on my body stand on end. His scorching lips connect with mine, the warmth radiating throughout my body, setting my whole being on fire.He gently pries my lips apart with his tongue, deepening his kiss, drawing me into him and shutting out the rest of the world.I slip my arm around his neck and hold on to him, bringing him closer to me, begging for more. Needing more. Wanting all of him. It’s just the two of us, here, alone, safe in our little bubble. All the doubts I had evaporate like mist on a warm summer's day.The hand resting lightly on my hip twitches and slips down, folding around my butt. Warm heat explodes between my legs and nestles there with a throbbing ache, begging for some kind of release. The intensity of the kiss nearly destroys me. It’s as if my mate is pouring all his longing into it, and I can feel it in the depths of my being.Bowden groans softly and breaks away. “Dammit,” he mutters.I’m relieved

Chapter 34

Kaiya“What kinds of questions?” Vanessa asks. This is embarrassing. “I…can you keep a secret?”Smiling at me, her face softens as she nods.“When the king met me, he said that we won’t have a physical relationship, but now…I think we’re headed that way.”“Okay, and?”“All I know about sex is the mechanics.” I can feel the blood rushing to my cheeks. “You know, what parts go where. I don’t know anything else.”To my surprise, Vanessa doesn’t laugh or make fun of me. I was ready for that, so I’m slightly taken aback when she shows sympathy instead of mirth. “Wolves really like to keep their women pure, don’t they?”“I don’t know…no, I don’t think so, not really. In our pack, everyone fornicated with everyone else until they were mated.” Except, of course, girls like me. The high-ranking wolves' daughters were off-limits and expected to keep their virginity until they mated.“How did they prevent pregnancy?”“Uhm,” my mother told me this when I was about thirteen, but a lot of it’s gone

Chapter 35

BowdenI knew inviting Leonard was risky, but as the biggest pack in my kingdom, I could not ignore the Alpha of Moon Dance. He’d take it personally, and it could spark a war between packs – the moment I show that kind of disrespect to one of the most powerful Alphas in the kingdom, other wolves will see it as an opportunity to attack him.'Moon Dance,' I smirk to myself. What a ridiculous name for a pack.Snorting softly, I lock my office door, and right away three guards surround me. I don’t need them, but it sends a powerful message to the Alphas. The castle is busy. I posted extra guards at the entrances to our living spaces, but every other part of the castle is open to the guests. They like it here, and I understand why. The castle is beautiful, it’s historic, and most will never get the chance to see it again.I smile and nod as far as I go, dodging playing pups and haggard nannies. The children don’t bother me. I love them. They give the place a little life. The castle feels t

Chapter 36

Bowden This morning, like every other morning, whizzes by, and I still haven’t had time to talk to Kaiya about the kiss we shared. It’s not just the Alphas’ and excitement of the upcoming ceremony that’s taking up my time; I still have to pay attention to my daily tasks and the mundane chores of running a kingdom. I remind Kaiya of the Alphas' arrival at ten-thirty and get up to meet her in the lobby. Today, she’s wearing blue, which suits her just as well as the red did. Unlike yesterday, her hair is loose, framing her beautiful, and by now, familiar face. “Hey,” she says and tucks on the gold necklace that's always around her neck. I take her hand in mine, touching her for the first time today, and realise I don’t want to let her go again. It feels good and right to have her by my side. This is the kind of mate bond we used to talk about when we were young Lycans. We saw our fathers with our mothers, the love and the bond they shared, their devotion to each other, and we’d dream

Chapter 37

Kaiya After an unexpectedly long and busy day, I go back to my room to wash and dress for tonight’s dinner with the visitors. I had three meetings with Lunas, but only one had a real problem. The other two wanted to know if I’d attend their sham charity dinners and contribute to their ridiculous causes, one of which was a sponsored flower garden at their pack house. The third Luna asked me if I could get her daughter out of a mating situation. “I don’t know if I can help with something like that.” “Oh, no, no,” the Luna said. “I wondered if you could ask the king to step in.” “Why don’t you just ask him yourself?” The Luna’s eyes widened in shock. “A she-wolf can’t just…speak to the king,” she gasped. “Why not?” “My mate will have my hide. Besides-” she leaned over my new desk in my new office -“this is woman’s business.” “Okay,” I finally conceded. “I’ll talk to the king, but I can’t promise you anything. Her father is forcing her to mate with this Beta?” The Luna woefully n

**TRIGGER WARNING:** This chapter contains graphic scenes that might be upsetting to some readers. Please proceed with caution or skip to Chapter 39 Kaiya Bowden stares at me with those cold, green eyes of his. I can see him switch off, and I remember Elias saying that it’s never a good idea to get on his bad side. Now I can see why. The anger radiating from him is like a nuclear blast, and it’s threatening to take my breath away. “Are you angry at me?" I ask him through our mind link. "I didn't do these things." "I know. I am trying here, Kaiya." "Can’t you use your aura to compel me to speak the truth?” I ask him. I can’t stand all their judgy eyes on me. All these men who hurt us and abuse us, then play these games with us, treating us like shit. I stick my fist in my mouth to stop the tears. I won't give them the satisfaction of seeing me cry. Bowden takes a step towards me but then reconsiders and stops. “My aura doesn’t work on you,” he explains and folds his arms over his

Chapter 39

Bowden Kaiya is never going to forgive me for what I had done to her. It doesn't matter that she outright dared me to do it. She trusted that I'd protect her and I couldn't. I didn’t see any other way out of this mess, especially not after she demanded that we do the purity test. And all of this because of Leonard. “You did not have to perform the purity test, your majesty,” he states. “The fuck he didn’t,” Luke says. “You forced his hand. You insisted on doing that purity test.” “Shut up,” I say and blast the Alpha with all the force of my aura. He goes white and slides off his chair, hitting the floor with a satisfyingly loud thud. “I do not remember you speaking up for the queen when you had the chance.” “I did,” the Alpha wheezes. “I really do not care about her virginity.” “Keep talking,” I say. “I’ll have you on this floor right next to Leonard.” I look at the Alpha of Moon Dance. “Well? We’re all waiting. Start begging. Crawl to her on your hands and knees like the dog yo

Chapter 40

Kaiya A strange kind of hush falls over the castle. Usually, there’s always someone bustling around, off to do one of the many things needed to keep this place running like a German train schedule. Even in the middle of the night, I can hear guards calling out to each other on the grounds, or the sound of Omegas running through the hallways. Tonight, it’s like a grave. As quiet as the catacombs. Around midnight, the silence unnerves me and I get up to ask Oswald about it, but he’s not on his post. I turn my head in every direction, but there’s no one. I'm all alone up here. Feeling a little nervous, I go to the last person I want to see. Bowden. He came by earlier, but I refused to talk to him. He left again without saying a word. “Why won’t you talk to our mate?” Elowen asked when he left. “I’m angry at him.” “It wasn’t his fault,” she said. “He tried to protect us.” I didn’t listen to her. She’s a wolf, and she will do anything her mate asks her to do without question, even
