As we continued walking, I asked Derek, "So, was being a judge always your dream when you were a kid?"Derek chuckled and shook his head. "No, actually," he said. "When I was a kid, I wanted to be a police detective."I raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "Really?" I asked. "What made you want to be a detective?"Derek grinned mischievously. "I think it was all the Nancy Drew books I read as a kid," he said. "I loved solving mysteries and figuring out whodunit."I laughed. "That's hilarious," I said. "I can totally see you as a detective, solving crimes and wearing a trench coat."Derek chuckled. "Yeah, I would have been a great detective," he said. "But, unfortunately, it didn't quite work out that way."I leaned in, curious. "What happened?" I asked.Derek shrugged.
