Chapter 81: "You knew."

“I can hear him breathing Danis.” Somehow that one sentence from Roman has me feeling like he’s just ruined everything. Something strange is happening here and for some reason, that thing has Danis thinking his friend is dead.I look at the body on the floor and see his chest rise and fall. So he’s breathing. Danis readily meets my gaze when I look at him but there’s an awareness in his eyes, there’s a glimmer in his green eyes that has them turning red for the barest second and just like that, I know he knows. Danis knows about the strange serpent. “Is there anything you’re not telling us, Danis?” Roman gets up from his seat now and as he walks over, his aura flares and fills the space all around us. The pressure on my chest comes back again. It’s almost the same way it did when Fen used his on me but this time it’s different. If the Beta of the Ironclaw pack’s aura felt like a weight on my chest, the Alpha’s feels the same, but instead of the weight being equivalent to that

Chapter 82: "I think I can see them."

Roman's pov Danis is still where we left him when I come back and Scarlett refuses to meet my eyes. Fenrir sends a ripple of sadness through my heart when he notices that, just the slightest bit of emotion to tell me he’s sad about this, but he’s also an Alpha who has his pride and won’t feel guilty when he was just trying to do what is best for his mate. “Is there any way to get rid of that thing, Danis?” The concern in her voice makes me understand why she’s angry, and I do, I understand it. Endangering the lives of wolves under my care all because of one female isn’t something that I would have ever done, but this female isn’t just any female. She’s half of my soul and she’s a second chance. People tend to take their first chance for granted. Elara’s loss was not something I ever imagined would happen. I never for once imagined that the sun would rise with me alive and without her by my side, but it did. Death came and dealt me a blow, one I still feel as heavy and as hard as

Chapter 83: "Trust me Roman."

Scarlett's pov. Danis gapes at me and it doesn’t take me a soothsayer to know he doesn’t really believe me. I barely believe myself but I'm telling the truth. I do think I can see them. The “defenses” Priam has on him. They’re little strands of light wrapping themselves around his body. They glow with this red-purple light that is malevolent no matter how I look at it. As Danis said, I can feel the power coming off those strands of light. Whoever put them there was powerful enough to make them, and if I look even more closely. “Scarlett!” Roman’s hand snatches my wrist and drags me back in a quick second, yet it doesn’t stop me from seeing the thing that lashed out at me. The flames are red hot and fiery. They curl around each other like the strands of a tightly corded whip, all the way from long the slithery length to the serpent-like head. My eyes lock with this creature and it hisses, a violent sound that has goosebumps crawling up the back of my spine. My heart almost give

Chapter 84: "Power always has a price, Scarlett."

Scarlett's pov Danis doesn’t seem to understand it no matter how I explain to him.He stares at me warily and his brows scrunch in confusion. “You mean to tell me you saw a vision of a snake with flowers blooming from its body? Then the world kind of melted around you and that snake combined with the moon?” That’s a crude way of putting it but I nod all the same and the confusion on Danis’s face seems to increase tenfold. “And you aren’t scared? You know how creepy that sounds, right?” I roll my eyes because I'm sure it’s nothing near as creepy as what some of the wolves from his pack do when it comes to sorcery. Danis seems to be naturally gifted with his power, but others are not. My reply leaves my lips sounding more honest than I intend it to be. “I’ve seen creepier stuff Danis.” “But that doesn’t explain why you’re able to deactivate the wards around Priam.” Danis is making moving on from this hard for me so I look to Roman. His ice-blue eyes meet mine and I find myself

Chapter 85: "Do what you must Alpha."

Roman's pov.Flame erupts in a crescendo but I see Scarlett speaking words of power to it.My mother once told me the words of a woman are powerful, the words of a mother even more.I feel the aura of a mother radiating off her. It’s a protective thing, it’s an aura with love at its forefront, following it is care, and at the heart of it is sacrifice.Danis speaks in his slithery lilting tones and even from this distance, I can see the surprise on his face.Scarlett speaks slower than he does, and though her words slither and lilt, they don’t sound the way the sorcerer”s does. Her words don’t hurt me as I listen to them, she takes them one at a time, gibberish sounding and insensible, but perfectly sensible at the same time. Her hand moves and my aura flows out of me to block her on instinct.A fresh gush of flames erupts from within the circle and shoots out at her but they never get to her.Fenrir channels his rage at the attack on his mate into me and my eyes glow fiercer than they

Chapter 86: "A woman such as yourself?"

Scarlett's pov.Roman takes all but ten minutes to have his office converted into a small recovery center. He makes one call and in the next three minutes, men file into the office taking care to walk around us and not disturb Priam, me, or Danis. They cart out couches and bookshelves, the pretty glass table Roman has in a corner of his office. They clear everything except his work table and chair and then the medical supplies get wheeled in.Men and women in white robes walk in and from the small name tags on their chests, they’re doctors. Four male doctors and four female doctors.Machines are brought in, sparkling brand-new medical equipment. Heavy-set hospital beds get wheeled in afterward and just like that, I have two doctors attending to me and asking me questions while one stands at the side, on standby. To say I'm mind blown would be an understatement.Even Danis seems to be suppressing a grin as he’s attended to.“Miss Vivienne?”I snap out of my thoughts and turn my head t

Chapter 87: "How long are you going to hide your feelings for him?"

Roman's pov.I stand outside the door and listen to Scarlett list the qualities she feels would be good in a woman for me.She speaks about the height difference between me and this lady not being too much, but if she stands in front of me, her head at least reaches my collarbone. In heels, I might be able to place my chin on her head and nestle her there as I wrap my hand around her waist.“She also has to be brave and fierce. Roman is an action man. He sees something in need of doing and he does it. He needs someone who won’t pull him back, but who’ll also be brave enough to be the voice of reason when he needs one.”Her conversation with me on speaking to three Alphas at the Lykos fundraiser comes to mind.I suggested subtle intimidation. Nothing too direct, just letting the packs allied with the Nightshade pack know they might have a hard time if they keep supporting Hunter.Yet she refused. She insisted on dialogue. She told me that loyalty is earned not forced, and she made good

Chapter 88: "You don't trust me, Scarlett."

Scarlett's pov. I slam my hand over my mouth immediately the scream escapes but it’s too late. It’s out already and a loud groan follows closely. My eyes flit to Danis but i know he’s been awake for a while now, the groan is that of someone whose sleep has been disturbed and the only person who fits that description is Priam. My eyes meet his disoriented purple ones and a frown lines his face. Roman’s presence beside me steadies my reaction and my apology dies in my throat. I should apologize for waking him up but instead what comes out of me is. “How are you feeling?” If the words are too loud for Priam I can't tell because he simply groans once more and turns away. He moves the blanket so it covers his form fully and drapes it over his head. My brows furrow in concern but I catch sight of Danis rolling his eyes and decide to give it a rest. Maybe he needs some more time before he starts getting grilled. My eyes take me back to the laptop and a surge of excitement comes ali

Chapter 89: "You can't catch a break, can you?"

Roman opens the envelope, reads the letter in it, and rips it up neatly before walking over to the bin in the room and depositing it in there. Each action contains a sort of tension that has the pit formed in my stomach deepening. Why does it always turn out this way?I sincerely didn’t mean to make him feel like I don't trust him. I didn’t read it.I couldn’t read it since it was meant for him.I hear the door click as he steps out of the room and something in my heart shatters. I curse under my breath and run my hand through my hair. When I look at Danis, he’s grinning.“You can’t catch a break, can you?”I nod albeit grudgingly. I can’t seem to catch a break and it’s infuriating. I walk back to the bed and pick up Roman’s laptop before walking over to his desk and placing it on the smooth surface.I return to my bed and slump into it.Even the clinical orderliness of this room doesn’t seem to calm my rioting nerves.“Should I go after him?”It annoys me that I'm asking this questi

Chapter 90: "I hear you loud and clear, Alpha."

Roman raises the ax and brings it down in a clean arc. The tree sways dangerously but the space in front of me right now is wide enough that he can get away with felling a tree. There’s enough space for it to fall and not hit anything. Roman hits the tree with the ax again and it sways once more. Then again, and again and again until I realize that he’s not trying to fell the tree. If he was it would have fallen a long time ago if he wanted it that way, he isn’t looking to make it fall. I pull in a deep breath and approach the swinging Alpha. On anyone else, this activity would have made them look sweaty and exerting. On Roman, I can only see the way he hefts the axe with ease. The sun slides on the blade of said ax before he swings it with such force that the glint of the sunlight seems to leave an afterimage as it follows the curve of the ax. How he’s doing this in his black shirt and pants isn’t helping me focus at all. “I’m sorry, Roman.” He ignores me and keeps on swi
