Roman's pov.Flame erupts in a crescendo but I see Scarlett speaking words of power to it.My mother once told me the words of a woman are powerful, the words of a mother even more.I feel the aura of a mother radiating off her. It’s a protective thing, it’s an aura with love at its forefront, following it is care, and at the heart of it is sacrifice.Danis speaks in his slithery lilting tones and even from this distance, I can see the surprise on his face.Scarlett speaks slower than he does, and though her words slither and lilt, they don’t sound the way the sorcerer”s does. Her words don’t hurt me as I listen to them, she takes them one at a time, gibberish sounding and insensible, but perfectly sensible at the same time. Her hand moves and my aura flows out of me to block her on instinct.A fresh gush of flames erupts from within the circle and shoots out at her but they never get to her.Fenrir channels his rage at the attack on his mate into me and my eyes glow fiercer than they
Scarlett's pov.Roman takes all but ten minutes to have his office converted into a small recovery center. He makes one call and in the next three minutes, men file into the office taking care to walk around us and not disturb Priam, me, or Danis. They cart out couches and bookshelves, the pretty glass table Roman has in a corner of his office. They clear everything except his work table and chair and then the medical supplies get wheeled in.Men and women in white robes walk in and from the small name tags on their chests, they’re doctors. Four male doctors and four female doctors.Machines are brought in, sparkling brand-new medical equipment. Heavy-set hospital beds get wheeled in afterward and just like that, I have two doctors attending to me and asking me questions while one stands at the side, on standby. To say I'm mind blown would be an understatement.Even Danis seems to be suppressing a grin as he’s attended to.“Miss Vivienne?”I snap out of my thoughts and turn my head t
Roman's pov.I stand outside the door and listen to Scarlett list the qualities she feels would be good in a woman for me.She speaks about the height difference between me and this lady not being too much, but if she stands in front of me, her head at least reaches my collarbone. In heels, I might be able to place my chin on her head and nestle her there as I wrap my hand around her waist.“She also has to be brave and fierce. Roman is an action man. He sees something in need of doing and he does it. He needs someone who won’t pull him back, but who’ll also be brave enough to be the voice of reason when he needs one.”Her conversation with me on speaking to three Alphas at the Lykos fundraiser comes to mind.I suggested subtle intimidation. Nothing too direct, just letting the packs allied with the Nightshade pack know they might have a hard time if they keep supporting Hunter.Yet she refused. She insisted on dialogue. She told me that loyalty is earned not forced, and she made good
Scarlett's pov. I slam my hand over my mouth immediately the scream escapes but it’s too late. It’s out already and a loud groan follows closely. My eyes flit to Danis but i know he’s been awake for a while now, the groan is that of someone whose sleep has been disturbed and the only person who fits that description is Priam. My eyes meet his disoriented purple ones and a frown lines his face. Roman’s presence beside me steadies my reaction and my apology dies in my throat. I should apologize for waking him up but instead what comes out of me is. “How are you feeling?” If the words are too loud for Priam I can't tell because he simply groans once more and turns away. He moves the blanket so it covers his form fully and drapes it over his head. My brows furrow in concern but I catch sight of Danis rolling his eyes and decide to give it a rest. Maybe he needs some more time before he starts getting grilled. My eyes take me back to the laptop and a surge of excitement comes ali
Roman opens the envelope, reads the letter in it, and rips it up neatly before walking over to the bin in the room and depositing it in there. Each action contains a sort of tension that has the pit formed in my stomach deepening. Why does it always turn out this way?I sincerely didn’t mean to make him feel like I don't trust him. I didn’t read it.I couldn’t read it since it was meant for him.I hear the door click as he steps out of the room and something in my heart shatters. I curse under my breath and run my hand through my hair. When I look at Danis, he’s grinning.“You can’t catch a break, can you?”I nod albeit grudgingly. I can’t seem to catch a break and it’s infuriating. I walk back to the bed and pick up Roman’s laptop before walking over to his desk and placing it on the smooth surface.I return to my bed and slump into it.Even the clinical orderliness of this room doesn’t seem to calm my rioting nerves.“Should I go after him?”It annoys me that I'm asking this questi
Roman raises the ax and brings it down in a clean arc. The tree sways dangerously but the space in front of me right now is wide enough that he can get away with felling a tree. There’s enough space for it to fall and not hit anything. Roman hits the tree with the ax again and it sways once more. Then again, and again and again until I realize that he’s not trying to fell the tree. If he was it would have fallen a long time ago if he wanted it that way, he isn’t looking to make it fall. I pull in a deep breath and approach the swinging Alpha. On anyone else, this activity would have made them look sweaty and exerting. On Roman, I can only see the way he hefts the axe with ease. The sun slides on the blade of said ax before he swings it with such force that the glint of the sunlight seems to leave an afterimage as it follows the curve of the ax. How he’s doing this in his black shirt and pants isn’t helping me focus at all. “I’m sorry, Roman.” He ignores me and keeps on swi
Danis casts a spell around the garden while Roman picks up his ax and puts it away.Priam pushes hard on the tree Roman was hitting earlier and it cracks and groans as it finally topples and goes crashing down to the ground. Leaves fly in the air and I'm pretty sure he just made a huge mess but Roman doesn’t say anything about it.Priam sits on the stump of the felled tree and he takes a deep breath. I guess he’s still a bit tired so he needs to rest constantly. Being delivered of a curse has to have some side effects right? I’m caught off guard when he looks at me and nods, the proud jut of his chin deflating a little bit.“Thank you.”My brain stops functioning for a while and I am almost tempted to ask what he’s thanking me for, until he moves the shoulder of his loose white shirt and I see something strange there. It’s like a faded tattoo. The mark looks fresh, but not quite. He covers it up again and gives me a sad smile.“I’ve been trying to get rid of it for years now, so tha
Roman's pov Scarlett moves her hair forward and at the sight of her nape, images fill my head. My hand stills on her zipper and despite Danis’s request to have it go lower, I find it hard to do that. They shouldn’t get to see any inch of her skin if I don't want them to. Except one of them already has. I glare at Danis as I move the zipper lower slowly. Scarlett seems to heat up with the action and I stop the moment I see the purple strap of her bra. Scarlett turns and bares her exposed back to these men. Her eyes are down and I can't see through her lashes, so I glare at Danis and Priam instead. Danis looks unsurprised by my reaction but his eyes still stay fixated on the mark all the same. He nods to himself and draws a sign in the air. I wait to smell the flare of his power but I can't. My eyes drift to Priam and his gaze is critical. Knowledge glimmers in his eyes and when he looks up, a grim line settles on his face. “I need to get back to my pack.” Scarlett turns aroun
