The woman looked around the room and shook her head. Her eyes fell on Emma who was staring at her.“Who are you?” she asked rudely.Although Emma didn’t like her tone of voice, she stepped forward. She figured the woman was angry because of the situation she was in. Anyone getting locked in that dank place would definitely feel a range of negative emotions and react accordingly.“My name is Emma.”“So Emma, why are you staring at me?” the woman asked. “Haven’t you ever seen a human being before or what?”Emma thought she heard a low chuckle from one of the emaciated woman. By morning, Emma was extremely hungry. She and Casey had not talked again after she went off to think. She ended up falling asleep. She saw that all the other women were still lying down. She could tell that some of them were awake while others were asleep. Casey was standing in the corner, making different signs with her hands and chanting some words. Emma soon realised that the young woman was trying to summon her powers but whatever she was doing was not working, evidenced by the look of frustration on her face.“I’ve tried everything,” Casey said. “Nothing is working.”“It hasn’t been twenty four hours yet.”“I know, but I thought there would be a loophole or something,” the woman said. “I was hoping for even a small sign that I could be able to use my powers any time soon. “What are you going to do?” Emma asked her new friend.“I’m going to perform that can get us all out of here.”“But you don’t have your powers.”“True, but I can siphon from other elements. She looked around again and went towards one of the corners. There was a heap of trash there. Casey picked up a soft metallic tin and started tearing it apart. Casey took an antidote for the herb that had taken made her powers dormant. Her powers returned fully a few minutes after that. She used them to cloak her house and make it invisible. If the vampires came looking for her, they would only see a bush around and wouldn’t be able to see the house and its occupants. They wouldn’t even know where exactly it was.The pregnant woman was very tired so she slept almost as soon as they arrived. Casey and Emma went to sit on the porch. They talked as they took some drinks.“You’re a hero, Casey. What you did today, saving all of us, was epic. You’re the reason we have powers, to use them for good. Emma turned and her eyes went wide when she saw Lucius. He was wearing a black vest and black short with red trainers. “Hey,” Emma said.“Come with me,” he said, and ran eastwards. Emma started running, following him as they went deeper into the forest and further from the pack household. Thick mist had covered the entire forest, the fog obscuring the trees and bushes. The gentle rustling of leaves, cries of the birds and the patter of their feet were the only things that could be heard. Lucius led her to a hidden spot in the middle of the forest. It was a secluded clearing surrounded by tall trees and thick shrubs. The rays of the sun seeped through the tree leaves, creating different patterns on the lush foliage. There was a large tree trunk at the centre. Mist had settled on it due to the cold. What could he have done? Emma wondered as she left the clearing and started to move aimlessly around the forest. The mist had reduced and the sun was starting to shine brighter, making the atmosphere warmer. She couldn’t help but worry about what Lucius was hiding from her. She debated going to the pack to find out for herself but decided it would be a bad idea, given what she was wearing.
