You Deserve Everything Good

Chapter 61Nancy was in the stable tending the horses, it was where she spent most of the snowy days now since it was the warmest and most important place in the house for her. Each day, after assisting Rosey with the chores and keeping Mitchelle company while Rosey napped, she would hurry down to the stable to care for the horses and chat lazily with Phil, who was now accustomed to her presence. Beside her, Victory lay close to her feet, chewing noisily on a straw that Nancy threw in her direction occasionally. Phil was out to fetch the woods he had m started cutting up to fix a spot on the stable fence where the storm had left in ruins. That afternoon, Naya came around the stable in the guise of bringing Phil's lunch. She drove Nancy mad with her insistent chattering about things that she could barely keep her mind on. Nancy only waited patiently for Phil to return so she could head back to the main house, but unfortunately, that did not happen until almost later in the evening when

Guilt

Chapter 62The man was panting by the time he caught up with the heavily armed and unsmiling group of men who stood by the foot of the hill, apparently waiting for him. One of them regarded him with intent eyes that he struggled to ascertain. but all he could see in those eyes were anger and a distant sadness. He needed no telling that this was the leader of the small group of soldiers before him, but he had to admit that this one was a handsome devil, even more handsome than the blonde one who had captured him the night before. “What do I do with you now, fellow?” The unsmiling leader asked in a slow drawl. The man stuttered, “I promise I am not your enemy, killing me will not help you in anyway, sir.” “You may be right, but you were caught in the enemy’s territory. And you were trespassing the night before. Convince me that you are not a spy and I will spare your life.” The man gulped, this man in front of him was not joking and he certainly was not mincing words when he said he

Imaginations Run Wild

Chapter 63 Scarlett’s patience was running thin by the minute as she waited by the hallway. The house was quiet, nearly everyone was sound asleep, but she had to wait down here for her only ally if she was going to succeed with her plans without running into one of those lousy maids.“Lady Scarlet.” She smiled, “Finally. You do know it is not good to keep a lady waiting, don’t you?” He bent his head and nodded his answer, “I’m sorry, I had to make sure nobody saw me since you said you wanted to be discreet.” “And you were right to do that, all is forgiven.” Scarlett said easily as she led him out the front door, “We need to talk.” “We can do that here.” “No we can’t, it is a sensitive topic. What did you say your name was again?” “Philip. Phillip Norman, My Lady.” “Scarlett, if you may, Philly boy. Come with me.” Phillip followed the lady out of the main house, how she had managed to remain there without Nancy throwing her out was still a mystery to him. The maid who delivers

Nobody Did

Chapter 64 “I swear I heard the front door open.” “That is absurd, I didn’t hear it. And I know you didn’t, Rosey. Your hormones are beginning to take over your every sense.” “Then don’t you think that means I can hear things you don’t?” Rosey asked in a sudden twirl of interest.“No. I think it means you will believe you hear things or smell things when actually you don’t. Or when you are not supposed to.” Mitchelle said and waved her hand towards Rosey in dismissal. “I will go with the other option; when I’m not supposed to, thank you. Because I trust my senses, I did hear the front door open. Are you sure no one returned late last night?” “Nobody did.” Mitchelle answered tiredly. They were in the kitchen that morning, Rosey was separating the shaft from some wild fronts she had had a servant pick for her that morning, courtesy of her cravings. Mitchelle was preparing breakfast, and occasionally staring a large portion of broth on the dying fire by the hearth. Nancy sat at the

It Will Pass

Chapter 65 Phil was grooming the black horse Daniel had gifted her outside the stable by the time she got there. The snow was not as heavy as it was the night before, so Nancy dropped Victory inside the stable and threw her a few straws to work on. She walked back to Phil and rubbed the horse’s mane dottingly.“I didn’t imagine it would need grooming so soon.” “They grow fast, Victory for example.” Phil replied, he did not look up from what he was doing, “I didn’t think you would come out today.” “Why not? What else would I be doing?” He shrugged, “Maybe resting. I think you are overworking yourself since Derek left. You help in the kitchen and here.” “I am not fragile, Phil. So you have no need to fear, I won’t break in two. And please let me have all the fun doing what I enjoy, now that Derek is away.”He nodded without looking up, “I see. Are you going to be there for that?” Nancy frowned, “For what?” “Never mind, Nancy. I have no business asking you that.” She studied him

Couple’s fight?

Chapter 66Nancy was so shaken by what just transpired that she ran straight to the room and shut it tightly. What was happening? She had never imagined that she would be hearing this from any other person in a long time, and certainly not Phil. Was fate playing tricks on her? She felt so shaken, for some reason, the thought of someone you regarded as a friend suddenly telling you they have feelings for you and want to be more was suddenly like ugly music for a painful headache. It was scary.Indeed, she had contemplated the idea of escaping while Derek was away, it was not alien to her. But certainly not with any other person, and definitely not a lover. Not when she had not even made up her mind about leaving herself. Where could they go? Phil was just a stable boy, with no other source of income. Derek might be heartless most times, but was that worth leaving all this for? There was still too much she didn’t know yet, about this whole mix up of her identity. It was one of the reaso

Possibilities

Chapter 67The maid opened the front door after the third knock only to find Daniel Lincoln standing there, his hand was raised to knock for the fourth time but he was caught mid air. So he just stood there, waiting to be invited in. Nancy was in the parlor, he could see her from where he stood in the doorway, she looked moody but that was no surprise to him, she was always occupied with her thoughts or in some sort of mood each time they met."Sir Daniel," the maid said in a way of greeting."Just Daniel please, I suppose this is the part where you invite me in? If you are observant you will see that it's pretty cold out here with all the snow and…"Realizing her mistake, Mitchelle shifted from the doorway "Oh! I'm so sorry sir. Do come in, pardon my manners." Nancy was sitting by the fire in the large parlor, her back to the door. But he could see the solemn look on her face, her expression was distant and she hardly noticed his presence. She was aware that someone had entered the

A Suicide Note?

Chapter 68The room was dark and unusually chilly, the curtains were drawn down, even the balcony door was tightly shut. There was no one in the room but her, Nancy turned on the bed and lay on her side, facing the door. She waited for her eyes to get used to the darkness because she was still trying to make out the room. A few seconds later, she was squinting her eyes and trying to leave the bed. Her knees were still weak but her weight felt too heavy, even for her. She felt lightheaded and even though she just left the bed, that dizziness was still there in her eyes. When she sat up on the bed, she closed her eyes and let her head fall backwards, she stayed that way for a while trying to catch her breath. When she felt she had rested enough, Nancy felt the table with her hands for a candle. By now, her eyes were used to the darkness around her. When she lit the candle, she carefully dropped it in the candle holder beside the bed and then made for the door. It took another minute f

Lydia’s Notes

Chapter 69Hurriedly, she set the book aside and continued pushing the other things in the bag. When she finally dropped the bag back where she had carried it, she took the book to the dressing table and brought the lamp closer. Nancy had to squint her eyes to be able to read the writing on the paper, the first part read;"I just learnt I will be a woman soon. To complete that, I need a family of my own. Mother is still in her shell concerning her last conversation with Father. But she says a noble lady's only obligation is to redeem her family's good name and uphold her husband's honor. Her happiness will come after. But I want no part of that." What in God’s green earth did that even mean? This was certainly Lydia's own. "A noble lady's only obligation… to redeem her family's good name… and uphold her husband's honor." Nancy shook her head as she tried to grasp the meaning but she flipped the pages instead since her head was already hurting from all the thinking she had been doing

Resentment

Chapter 70 Nancy felt an omnimous tingle run across the back of her neck. It was both of fear and of excitement, of surprise and disbelief, of happiness and sadness, of joy and pain, they were mixed feelings. She didn’t know which one she truly felt, didn’t know what she was supposed to do at the moment. Every thought left her head for a good ten minutes while Rosey and Mitchelle waited patiently for her to say something to indicate that she had heard them. Forgetting her own mission to stop Phil’s madness just outside the door, she carefully walked back to the bed and sat down without a word. So that explained her feelings recently, how had she not known? She shook her head at her own thoughts, how was she supposed to know that she was pregnant? She had never been close enough to any woman to find out all those things before. The closest she had been to a pregnant woman was Rosey, and the girl had done a good job at hiding her pregnancy from everyone until she found out not long ag
