Chapter 68

The room was dark and unusually chilly, the curtains were drawn down, even the balcony door was tightly shut. There was no one in the room but her, Nancy turned on the bed and lay on her side, facing the door. She waited for her eyes to get used to the darkness because she was still trying to make out the room. A few seconds later, she was squinting her eyes and trying to leave the bed. Her knees were still weak but her weight felt too heavy, even for her.

She felt lightheaded and even though she just left the bed, that dizziness was still there in her eyes. When she sat up on the bed, she closed her eyes and let her head fall backwards, she stayed that way for a while trying to catch her breath. When she felt she had rested enough, Nancy felt the table with her hands for a candle. By now, her eyes were used to the darkness around her.

When she lit the candle, she carefully dropped it in the candle holder beside the bed and then made for the door. It took another minute f
