Chapter 31

"No, I believe there was a mistake!", Lavinia's mother defended herself, exasperated. "We were just talking, after all, she lost sight of my daughter!""There are other methods of getting an employee's attention without denigrating them." John stated and I gently touched Val's shoulders in an act of comfort as I noticed the concern evident in her gaze. The nanny looked at me in dismay and I flashed her a friendly smile in mute affirmation that things were under control. I felt bad imagining that she probably needed her job badly, a situation that closely resembled mine and my mother's. "I don't know what happened, however, her behavior could get her a lawsuit for moral damages." The little girl's mother, who was playing near where we were meeting, was stunned and visibly nervous. She became irritated and I once again held her gaze. "Okay. Just ask that young lady to stay out of your business, she's nothing here!" she grunted affectedly. John's expression became stern and I rolled m

Chapter 32

Helena's POV"Good morning, Lena!" Barret, the driver, greeted me as he saw me laying out some clothes on the clothesline on that sunny and somewhat hot Saturday morning. "Hey, how are you, Barret? Enjoy your vacation?", I asked smiling. Barret was a middle-aged man who looked a lot like Mario Bros* and possessed an infectious friendliness. A trusted driver for the Carters, he had been working in the trade for over twenty years "his words"."Absolutely! Don't you notice my tan?" he joked, pointing to his own face and I laughed in agreement. "I'd better hurry, Mrs. Carter doesn't usually tolerate tardiness.", Barret said, already pulling away as he waved to me, who reciprocated the act. "Have a nice day!", I wished, raising my tone of voice so he could hear me, receiving an "equally" in response.I focused my attention back on the rest of my clothes, until I heard a distant noise coming from the area where the pool was located.John was there, partially lying on a sun lounger while

Chapter 33

"It depends... Do you want it with emotion or without emotion?" he inquired playfully and I looked at him annoyed trying to hold in my laughter. He raised his hands in surrender. "Okay... "I'll leave the emotions for later," he spoke in my ear and I shivered. I looked at him with an arched eyebrow and took his hand, finally getting on the bike. Vicenzo also climbed on, putting on his helmet, and before I could put on mine, I saw John's black Maserati leaving the condo. Our gazes met for a few seconds until he quickly swerved, looking at the street in front of him, and then disappeared from my field of vision. I put on my helmet and grabbed Vicenzo's waist like those little pencil grabbers, soon hearing his laugh. "It's hard to ride a motorcycle when you're short of breath, Lena," he said amid laughter, and I followed, not laughing. "Sorry.""I'm kidding. You can grab all you want.", I didn't have time to sketch a reaction, because after saying that, he took off with the bike. I

Vicenzo finished the song and once again the euphoric round of applause rang out through the lively atmosphere. He thanked me and left his guitar in a corner of the stage, coming toward me with a huge smile. When I was close enough, I clapped my hands together with my expression in clear admiration. "I enjoyed watching, rockstar."  He bowed and put an arm around me, leaving me partially cornered. I tried not to show any reaction, but it was a little strange to me. Not bad, but different.  "The guys are going over to the house, shall we?" he asked, closer to me than usual. He was staring at me in a way that was loaded with ulterior motives, and I knew very well where that night would end.  And you

Chapter 35

The place had filled up with people from one hour to the next, all I did was talk to the occasional nice person "and stoned" enough to stop beside me and philosophize about the shape of the smoke coming out of his mouth. I wasn't even drinking. Vicenzo wandered around the house in his energetic way, giving attention to each of his guests, making jokes, singing and everything else. I was shaking my head subtly to the rhythm of Nirvana's My Girl (Where Did You Sleep Last Night), which was blaring through the speaker. Vicenzo was really lucky that the building was practically uninhabited, otherwise his parties would certainly have been forbidden by angry neighbors. The figure of my colleague appeared in front of me, he smiled and stroked my waist, leaning me against the wall. "Something tells me you're looking for company," he spoke into my ear, causing me to shiver slightly.

Chapter 36

John's POVThe silent room reflected the lackluster atmosphere between Cassie and me.Sitting on the bed in her room while I waited for her to finish getting ready, I observed every point of the place that had once been the territory of incredible nights between the two of us, happy moments that were now only fragments of a relationship that had once been pleasurable. How had we come to this? What was my share of the blame in this frayed relationship? It is difficult to realize that you no longer feel the same way about someone who was once so much a part of your life. I felt a great deal of affection for Cassie, but it didn't seem to be enough to carry through a relationship, because this affection was only in recognition and gratitude for everything we had been through over the years. Maybe I should continue to live my life as I have always lived it in order to avoid possible conflicts, but this is what scares me the most. Being unhappy. I awoke from my reverie just as Cassie em

Chapter 37

"Your speech is based on domination and consequently on exploitation, so don't expect me to shut up. "John is the defender of the weak and oppressed, he thinks he can change the world by doing volunteer advocacy work out there. I always tell him that's irrelevant. "Cassie spoke in a tone of pure debauchery that made my blood rise as the others present laughed. I frowned in her direction noticeably angry at her stupid joke. I had a clear rule of living together and it was extremely important: Never, under any circumstances, make fun of something that is important to me. And with that shitty comment, Cassie had crossed every line. She intertwined her arm with mine, but I didn't show any reaction. Everyone was already immersed in another subject while I remained silent watching the concentration of people in the hall. "What's wrong with you?" Cassie whispered beside me, looking at me without understanding. I smiled sarcastically and stared at her. Before I could answer her, I heard

Chapter 38

"All this time, all I've done is try to be understanding. I'm not trying to absolve myself of the blame for our relationship being this way, but I definitely can't take it anymore. "I confessed dejectedly. The look on Cassie's face became surprised and I would even say frightened. "What do you mean you can't take it anymore? What are you talking about, John?" she questioned exasperatedly, approaching me. "When did our relationship become boring? When did everything I did start to annoy you and vice versa?" my question came out as a plea. No one started a relationship thinking about its end, but when it came closer, covering it up was no longer an option. Cassie opened and closed her mouth several times, searching for what to say. "Do you think our relationship has become boring? "And hasn't it?" I returned the question. "Stop and think about these last few months, Cassie."Come on. If I'm going to lay my cards on the table, then I will. You seem to forget all the times you've side

Chapter 39

After so much time with someone, realizing that you are alone gives you a strange feeling of emptiness. Cassie's words echoed wildly in my mind, and as much as they hurt, knowing that there was truth in what I had been told was uncomfortable. I had done the right thing, but the slight relief on my shoulders was no greater than the weight of the great emotional burden of our discussion. I started the car in the direction of my house feeling like a nervous wreck.  However, I also felt that a part of me was relieved.Helena's POV Too much lighting.Too little comfort. I closed my eyes in the brightness and felt a weight

Chapter 40

We left his apartment and went downstairs, but not before Vicenzo stopped me every five seconds to kiss me or make some funny remark. We made our way to the exit, where I quickly grimaced as I saw his motorcycle on the street. Here we go again. "I can still make you lose your fear of my little beauty.""I'm not too sure about that." I spoke uncertainly, putting on my helmet and gripping his waist tightly, suppressing a silly little scream the moment I felt the speed of the bike bounce off my body. I stayed that way the whole way, sighing with relief when Vicenzo stopped the bike in front of the condominium. I took off my helmet and handed it to the singer, who had also taken off his as he got off the bike to help me do the same. "Thanks for last night, I loved it," I smiled half-heartedly. "And thanks for driving me home.""I appreciate it. " he winked. "I'm always available." He moved closer and glued his lips to mine, initiating a kiss that lasted a few seconds. I smiled again an
