21. Declan

It’s only sixteen days and eight hours until the next full moon. Until I can hold her and adore her and pretend that we’re not stuck in this hellhole. Pretend that she isn’t heading for execution by my leaders when spring arrives. Pretend she isn’t the bloodline I dreamt about destroying. The more I think about it, the longer I spend smashing the home-made punching bag that has been hung in the repurposed Black Hall. Sweat drips down my body, frustration pouring out of me but never sated. Everyone here knows she is the daughter of Valdis. Howen has said more than once she is a bad seed, a reputation amongst the other workers. To try and distract myself, I attended the council meeting. Corina, dressed in a low-cut ruby silk sits at my side, assumes she is second in command. It doesn’t help that the gathering has to take place in one of Valdis’ old offices. It’s the only place with a table big enough. Standing around in a corridor is no good.“Sir…Alpha…I mean Declan,” Arlen spoke up, re

I had to seize this moment. The first time we had been alone together in over two weeks. To see him this agitated, pacing with his hands trembling awakens feelings of empathy. Over the years I have cradled Mara and others women through their suffering. I took beatings in their name rather than confirm their guilt. I did this out of guilt. I would never be in their shoes, a victim of Alpha Valdis’ savage lust. My guilt drove me to bathe their wounds and tend them, it wasn’t an act of love. I thought myself incapable of the notion, to be honest. Especially after Beta Ronan and those swirling tattoos travelling beyond his torso made it his mission to crush my belief in anything good. He once saw me tending to Mara, those long black coiled plaits trailing down his back and muttering, “rats are meant to eat the infirm ones, not help them,” before spitting on the sodden ground. Declan struggling like this, a tense beast of a man standing over me, wanting my affection, seeking my care le

I had no idea what to say, how can you describe the moment all of your dreams fall into place. I just nodded, allowing myself to smile and accept his soft kisses. “You’re very quiet, is this what you want too?” he murmured before I wrapped my arms around him huge shoulders. “Of course, I’m sorry yes. Yes!” my smile now so wide it started to hurt my face. “But we have to be a secret don’t we?” He sighed and clicked his tongue. “I may have just made a massive scene at the council about banning relationships,” and narrowed his dark eyebrows, “might have made an error there.” I shook my head, “I think I like it being just us, for a while, just…get used to the idea.” Sat on Corina’s bed I had a vision of her walking in and ruining everything. “I think we had better go, she’ll be back soon.” “Don’t go hiding from me anymore, okay? I don’t know how you manage to do it but sometimes it feels like you’ve escaped completely.” I blush, knowing that he means the occasions I am with Viktor,

She had it coming. From the instant I saw her draped all over Declan, in my room no less, she was headed straight for Ronan’s door. It was simply a case of timing. Last week I was trying to find Howen after the council meeting, wondering if he might have taken the initiative and headed to my room when I spotted them. I gasped but they didn’t hear a thing, so wrapped up in each other. Her legs wrapped around him more specifically. From the tiny slit in the door I left open I saw his dark eyes staring into her like she was some kind of innocent princess. She isn’t. She’s from the gutter. Her mother was a slave just like her. The fact her mother abandoned her and left her to the care of the other slaves, choosing to escape without her says everything. Yet Declan apparently adores her. If they are fated mates when we get back above ground I am dead meat. My father told me about Lyra’s mother ten years ago. Above ground, in his study, surrounded by trophies of war, booze and weapons

I was seething when Arlen showed me the missing food. Hastily ripped open parcels, just clumsy, selfish thieves.. “Sir, I have never known this happen before, obviously Valdis would have-” his pink, fleshy hands already quivering with fear. “I know what he would have done,” I growled darkly back before summoning everyone. Who would steal food? Who could be so selfish down here? Unfortunately, my mind initially turned to my fellow Rogues. Purely because those who have survived down here year after year know the dangers. They want the food to last. Then Fabian asked me to come check out something in corridor seven, the heating and pump rooms. Constant noise from the huge pipes and generators leaves my jaw clenched. It stinks like hell as Arlen, Sol, and the crew of identical looking shaven haired men with scared eyes constantly feed fuel and monitor the pressure. “We could have a better system. Surely they don’t all need to be in here. Especially since one pump is down. On a full mo

Any notion that my relationship with Lyra was a secret whilst we remained underground was in pieces. So many people constantly scurrying around this claustrophobic grey spider's web of a bunker with their constant whispering. It was probably never a secret to begin with.Laying her on her bed I brushed strands of black hair from her gentle face, those green eyes staring to nowhere. With no response I held her cheeks softly and begged her eyes to focus. There was nothing. Just a limp, empty vessel. Fear has paralysed her completely. Promising everything I could offer on this earth to the Moon Goddess in guttural, ragged whispers I softly caressed her face until I felt Reu’s hand on my shoulder. I had to back away. Do the right thing as the leader and not show favouritism. Be strong, push my own fear down. Push my own sickening fears under the surface.Twelve hours of waiting began, standing outside her door while Mara and Elvie gently changed her clothes and tended to her wounds. He h

It’s a close call but I might actually be getting away with what happened. Just remembering being stood in front of that blood covered ape gives me chills. She didn’t die but it’s been a week now and apart from eating some soup like an animal and allowing herself to be walked to the bathroom, Lyra is lost. Completely sunk. I had wanted her to die at the hands of Ronan. On balance, this alternative will do. Every time I feel a twinge of guilt at her shambling around in her white nightgown I remember my fathers teachings. The rules are different underground. Fear has people by the throat already, with a little bit of pressure they will see your way on any matter. Just look at my loyal Howen. Wearing black, confessing my accidental sins, Howen swearing he found Ronan first like a good boy, I'm almost innocent. Almost. Declan looks like shit. He’s started sleeping in the bunk above her. He doesn’t seem to care who knows about his crush on her. He leaves her for mere minutes at a t

Time stopped the instant Ronan snarled and shoved his shoulders into the silver bars. His face was covered in blood from me smashing him with a metal pan as I tried and failed to get away. The crunch of it meeting his skull was sickening. In little snatches of memory it rains tiny pieces of terror into my semi-awareness. Tiny threads such as the drop of my stomach when I realised the other doors were useless to hide in. Realising I was trapped like a rat just as the cell door slammed open. The first clawed grab of his that traced all the way down my body, slicing my hip, my dress, my thigh. The feel of his rough, calloused hand on my ankle as I managed to scrabble over him to get back into his room. When he moved that first bar, my shaking only increased. As it became clear he intended to plough through silver itself in order to ruin me it suddenly felt like I was pulled underwater. I retreated to a space I did not know. Like a dream I had awareness but no function. My eyes were o

The thudding bass of the Black Hall thundered down the corridor, paired with the familiar ebb and flow of my wolf rising within. I knew Elvie or Mara would have already washed and cared for me but I needed to shed this invisible layer. Scrub off the fear that I almost drowned in. I lifted the narrow sleeves of the nightgown from my shoulder, the cotton material quickly pooling at my feet. Twisting the taps to a steamy heat I stuck my head underneath. My long hair was instantly soaked, forming a black veil. The heat and rush of the water did nothing to stop the impact of the moon. Almost without thinking my hand wandered over my breasts and down towards my stomach. Then with a hitched breath I closed my eyes and allowed my fingers to slide in between my legs. To my surprise I was already slick, eager to feel pleasure. My body had woken to the sound of Declan’s voice in more ways than one. Had my wolf pushed me back to the surface for this purpose? I sighed and kept my forehead pres

Somehow we ended up in my room. I probably carried her, in all honesty, we might have just rolled all the way down the corridor for all I know. The shower alone almost sent me savage. She has no idea how beautiful she is, I don’t see a single scar when I look at her. She is just Lyra. My Lyra. My wolf and pulse stirs at just the thought of her, but she is resting in my arms. Crashed out on the cold concrete floor. I lean over and grab the blanket from my bed, covering her small frame. Even with me holding her, it can get cold underground. Reluctantly, there will need to be an address to the council tomorrow. It will be necessary to admit I was wrong and pretty much beg for a vote to allow relationships underground. Corina and Howen will be smug, but it’s worth it. Otherwise, I am a leader who lies and deceives. I want her by my side, with no hiding. Even the idea of Lyra sleeping in the dorm in the other corridor leaves an ache under my ribs. At my pulse quickening, Lyra stirs back
