Chapter 81: Benji

BENJI STOOD BACK AND admired the gleam of the wood floor. Most Mondays he took off work, but he hadn't felt like doing anything else. And after a busy weekend of people trekking in and out of the place, the floors had needed a day of pampering. His back and arms ached, but it was a good feeling. One that he got after a long day of work spent on the business that kept the family taken care of.He checked the time. Once again a kick of adrenaline hit him, making his heart beat just a bit faster. The anticipation was slowly killing him.Dixie would be ready before much longer. He needed to stow his gear and move ass to her place. Even with the events eating up the weekend, he'd spent a good deal of time pondering what she'd say today. He'd almost called her up late Saturday to suggest a midnight drive, but was willing to bet she'd be passed out. She didn't strike him as the night owl type.Benji turned the lights off and secured the doors. Scarlett was still in the office working

Chapter 82: Benji

Benji stood there a moment, Scarlett's words not quite making sense.Garth. Collapse. Hospital.Dad had collapsed and died without them knowing.People had whispered about the Lively family curse coming back. Was it here to take his brother?A warm weight settled on his arm. He glanced at Dixie, staring up at him with her bag over her shoulder.Benji didn't believe in a silly curse. This was the real world and that meant something as wrong with Garth."What hospital?" Benji asked."The only damn one in town," Scarlett snapped back."Okay, I'll be there in a minute. Everything will be fine, Scar.""He collapsed, Benji. Do you understand that? He couldn't say anything." Scarlett's voice was so high, her words broken."Babe, give me the phone," Cole said in the background."I'll see you at the hospital," Benji said."Come on." Dixie opened the front door.He moved on auto pilot, out the door, across the lawn and to the truck. Dixie was by his side with every step

Chapter 83: Dixie

DIXIE KEPT HER ARM hooked around Benjamin's and practically dragged him into her house. He didn't protest. He didn't say anything. He simply followed where she directed. She was wiped after this evening. She couldn't begin to imagine how Benjamin felt.Hadn't his father collapsed one day for no reason and died? Could it be hereditary? What about Benjamin?Dixie's father had a massive heart attack a few years ago. The doctors had indicated that the cause could be passed down. After seeing how her parents' lives were upended by the cardiac incident, she'd made changes to her life, hoping to escape the same fate. She stuffed her concerns to the back of her mind and fished out her keys."You got a note." Benjamin reached up and took the folded sheet of paper taped to her door off.Oh, great. Just what this day needed."Don't mind that. Inside." She unlocked the door and nudged him inside."The grass is too high." He frowned at the note.Dixie didn't need to see the note t

Chapter 84: Benji

They sat there for several long moments. The silence wasn't tense or awkward. It was nice after hours of straining to hear anything, any hint of news."Thanks for being there tonight," Benji said."I hate this is happening to your family." Dixie turned her face toward him and inhaled."I'm afraid I didn't put cologne on." He chuckled."What?" She froze, only then realizing that he didn't smell like he usually did.How did he know she liked his cologne?Oh, God...A real smile finally pulled the corners of his mouth up. He shifted, turning his upper body toward her."You might have told me I smelled really good one night. I can't quite remember when that was." His smile widened, and she knew exactly when she would have told him and blissfully forgotten about it."I didn't-I wasn't..." Dixie groaned and ducked her face.He slid the arm around her shoulders lower, tugging her closer still. She felt the press of his lips against her hair and the heat in her cheeks inten

Chapter 85: Benji

BENJI WISHED DIXIE WAS here. She'd know all the questions to ask, what should be written down. All he had was the printout she'd left in her mailbox this morning. He'd picked it up on his way out of town, following the ambulance transferring Garth from their little hospital to the big heart ward in the city.Garth was still laid up in his bed, exhausted from the constant poking, prodding and a battery of tests they'd performed all morning. Scarlett and Cole sat on the sofa under the window, holding tightly to each other. Which left Benji either in the corner behind the machines or seated in the hospital chair that made out into some kind of bed.He tapped the arm rests.Any minute now the doctor was going to give them the bad news."Knock, knock?" a woman called out."It's open," Benji said.A petite Asian woman who had to barely be over five feet breezed into the room. Her jet black hair was pulled into a ponytail that swayed as she walked. Her white coat was tailored and

Chapter 86: Dixie

DIXIE SLOWED THE CAR as she approached her house.A familiar green Jeep sat at the curb, windows down."Oh, dear," she muttered to herself. She turned her car into the driveway but didn't hit the garage opener.A bit of movement in her rearview mirror had Dixie glancing over her shoulder.Scarlett stood on the curb, her hair glinting red in the sunshine and a pair of sunglasses pushed up on her head. She wore a loose, floral dress with a jean jacket thrown over it and boots. Her face was somber, serious.Because of what was going on with Garth, or the sins Dixie needed to atone for?Maybe it was time to face the music. She grabbed her things and got out. Scarlett was closer now, her expression no less serious."How's Garth?" Dixie asked."He's going to be fine." Scarlett's shoulders slumped, and she breathed a sigh of relief. "He's going to be okay.""I'm sorry we're seeing each other under these circumstances." Dixie clutched her planner to her chest like a shiel

Chapter 87: Dixie

Dixie's front door swung open. Both girls started and stared at the man looming in the entry.Benjamin stared back at them, his brow furrowed, as if something was wrong."Hi." Scarlett glanced from Benjamin to Dixie, then back again.A familiar, annoying, heat crawled up her neck. Arriving at the hospital with Benjamin had looked suspect, she knew. But him busting in without knocking? Yeah, that was a new level for them."Well that looks like trouble." He swung the front door shut then toed off his boots."Did you forget how to knock?" Dixie released Scarlett's hands, the mushy girl bubble burst, and sat up."Sorry." To his credit he grimaced and at least seemed to mean it."What's wrong?" Scarlett sat forward. "Garth?""Kind of." Benjamin sank down in the oversized armchair and leaned forward, elbows on his knees. He rubbed at his face, the silence drawing out.Dixie swallowed and glanced at Scarlett. Her face had gone pale, and she had her bottom lip pinched betwe

Chapter 88: Benji

BENJI NEVER WOULD LIKE hospitals. They made him think about his aunt and uncle. Mom. They'd watched Dad waste away while visiting Mom. Hospitals symbolized all the loss in their lives. It seemed as though every time he went to one someone died. For all Garth was speaking to him, he might as well be dead. The asshole.Benji pressed back into the headrest and blew out a breath as he drove back into Ransom.Dixie would say that Garth was scared that he was expressing himself in the only way he knew how. She said a lot of smart shit Benji needed to hear. If it wasn't for her he'd have laid into Garth. Instead, Benji was maintaining something that resembled calm.He gave Scarlett a call to checked in with her. There wasn't much to say; quiet day, lots to do if they had any hope of getting ahead of things. She was wrapping up in the office for the afternoon before heading home to Cole. Satisfied that The Love Barn was taken care of for the day, Benji let everything else fall away.

Chapter 89: Benji

Benji pulled out her chair then sat across from her. "Scarlett and I are taking over a lot of Garth's work. The problem we're running into is that he doesn't write stuff down. He either remembers it, or it's in his email. Trying to share an in-box nearly caused a really nasty fight.""Oh, dear." Dixie passed him tortillas."Yeah." He grimaced. "I've always used my phone calendar for important things, but it's not going to cut it."She stared at him with wide eyes, brows lifted."You okay?" He chuckled."Yes. Go on." She'd put her fork down and the excitement bubbling off her was next level stuff."I was hoping you might have a calendar app or paper book idea.""You want a planner?" She clasped her hands to her chest and grinned."Yeah. I guess." He chuckled."What layout do you think you'd like? How much stuff are you keeping track of? Is size important?"Benji bent forward and laughed. If he'd known asking her about calendars would get this reaction, he might have

Chapter 90: Dixie

DIXIE PULLED INTO THE clinic parking lot.A big, blue truck sat at the very back, its wide set tires braced on both sides of the parking space. Benjamin sat on the tailgate, bent forward, elbows on his knees, looking at his phone. He glanced up at that very moment and locked eyes with her. A smile spread across his face, just for her.Her heart fluttered, and she smiled despite the nerves that had kept her awake for most of the night.Benjamin was at her door before she turned the car off. He helped her out and pulled her straight into a hug. She closed her eyes and took comfort in his presence. Yesterday they'd managed to get into a small clinic that would do their testing overnight. It was worth the extra fee to Dixie for the presence of mind to know now if Jace's scars would reach even further."Everything's going to be okay, no matter what the results say, okay?" he whispered into her ear.She didn't believe him, but his words were nice."Have you been waiting long?"
