Chapter 71: Dixie

"Hey, Dixie?""Hm?" Dixie glanced to her left at Luna. The other woman leaned closer and lifted her hand, whispering, "He's still looking at you.""Shut up," Dixie mumbled.Luna tossed her head back and laughed. She wrapped an arm around Dixie's shoulders and squeezed."I missed you," Luna said."I missed you, too. All of this.""Well, you aren't going to get rid of us easily next time." She wagged her finger at Dixie. "And just wait until the L.O.L. Gang get their hands on you.""L.O.L. Gang?" Dixie repeated slowly."Yeah." Luna grinned. "I think it was that new stylist at The Hair Box-well, new like ten years ago, new-she said all her cosmetology girlfriends called their much older clients their L.O.L.s. Little old ladies.""Oh, I see.""But you know the group that meets up in the antique shop tea room? That's a gang of L.O.L.s, so someone started calling them the L.O.L. Gang and it stuck.""Of course it did." Dixie shook her head. How was it she'd lived in Ra

Chapter 72: Benji

BENJI STOOD IN THE open barn doors gazing in at the bare floor.Half an hour ago it had been strewn with streamers, confetti and a billion napkins. He'd have to remember that whole throwing them in the air thing if they ever hosted another Greek wedding. They really hadn't been prepared for this group, but everything had gone off well enough. All of the attendees had appeared to have a good time. And the newlyweds had paused on their way out the door to gush about the event. It was a job well done. And Benji was ready to pass out.He glanced at the single light shining from inside his house. Garth had bailed earlier, leaving Benji with the last few things. That was highly unusual. Garthmicromanaged everything they did. Letting Benji turn the lights off was strange. His stomach growled. He turned his attention on the cheery light coming out from the open windows of Scarlett's house. What were the chances he could beg a plate there? The only thing to eat at his place wa

Chapter 73: Dixie

DIXIE CURLED HER LEGS under her and pulled the fluffy throw with a giraffe motif across her lap. Shonda's home was one of those special, few places that had become a kind of safe haven for Dixie. A place where she could go and vent without judgment. Monday nights when she and Elisabeth were invited over were her favorites. It was when Shonda's husband cooked and he was always trying out new things. Tonight was no different. Dixie couldn't pronounce the dish they'd eaten, but it had been delicious, much like everything else he cooked.Maybe Dixie needed to add cooking classes to her list."Have you started this month's book?" Elisabeth toed off her shoes and hugged a pillow to her chest. With the end of the school year looming, she was showing the seasonal stress."No. Have you?""I can't even think about getting it." Elisabeth pressed her fingers to her temples. "My brother, DeeDee. He's just...""I'm sorry.""Ever since he started getting letters from dad, it's like I don'

Chapter 74: Dixie

"I'm getting there." Dixie took a deep breath. "Talking to him is one reason why I want to be me again.""This is a lot deeper than I expected. I thought you were going to say he has a nice behind or something. We might need more wine for this kind of discussion." Shonda shook her head."His behind is very nice." Dixie fought the urge to fan herself. She was going to blush no matter what. "I like more than his physical attributes, you know?""He's fine and Dixie is too embarrassed to say it." Elisabeth snickered at her friend."I've known him most of my life. He's the older brother of one of my, well, former best friends. And speaking of, Scarlett wants to meet up and talk, so...it's complicated and too much.""But he treats you right, doesn't he?" Shonda asked."Of course.""He has a sexy voice.""You talking about me?" Shonda's husband stuck his head in through the arch and grinned."Your voice is sexy, but no. Dee-Dixie's new man. The one you talked to?" Shonda rea

Chapter 75: Benji

BENJI WAS LOOKING FORWARD to distracting himself with the guitars tonight. For an hour or two everything could be simple. He didn't have to wonder what her motivation was, would she snap at him, did he need to be prepared for some kind of verbal attack. He blew out a breath. They really had to figure Garth out.But not now. For the next little while Benji was going to focus on a pretty woman and the sound of a well-made guitar. He was determined to get her playing Forever and Ever, Amen before the end of the summer. He strolled through the barn doors and leaned against the exterior, watching the lane headed up the hill for Dixie's car. Since Garth was home tonight Benji had decided to avoid the house altogether.Dixie.They'd texted a few times and like last week her replies were short. To the point. Was that just how she communicated? Or was there something else going on? Did he imagine the sizzle when he touched her? Or was it really there? Then again, getting involve

Chapter 76: Dixie

DIXIE'S HANDS WOULDN'T STOP sweating. The room was comfortably cool. There was no reason for her perspiration, and yet every few minutes she was wiping her palms dry."From the top," Benjamin said and launched into singing again.Holy mother of...She tapped her toes and moved her hands, always a fraction of a second behind him. He'd dug out a song that had two simple chord changes. The rich sound of his singing seduced her senses. If she'd thought everyday Benjamin was hot, the singing, guitar playing one was hotter."Good, last bit," he said as they strummed between versus. It was easy for her to tell his playing from hers. His was clear, the sound pleasant. She was the opposite. It seemed she hit more dud notes than good ones. She arched her left hand a bit more, stretched her aching fingers and wielded the guitar pick up and down while her better sense continued to scatter. Somehow she made it through the last verse following along with Benjamin's lead."You did i

Chapter 77: Dixie

Dixie glanced down at their joined hands now resting on his thigh. His other arm was braced on the sofa behind her head. He'd leaned in so far it felt as though he were sheltering her from the world, putting himself between her and some unseen threat. When Benjamin was there, she felt safe. And other things she shouldn't feel about her friend's older brother. But there they were."Dix?" he murmured."Sure. It's okay." Except her mouth was dry. Parched. And it was becoming hard to breathe. He released her hand, leaving it sitting on his thigh, and cupped her cheek, turning her face toward him."And now?" he whispered. This wasn't the touch of a friend. Her insides quivered, half telling her to run while the other half wanted to crawl into his lap."It's fine," she whispered. The hand at her cheek slid back, his fingers curling around the back of her head, tugging her gently.Oh, God...A small voice in the back of her head screamed at her to do something. Sitting t

Chapter 78: Benji

BENJI LEANED THE SHOVEL up against the tree and dragged the back of his hand across his brow. The landscaping they'd been cultivating was paying off, but that had a few unfortunate results. Namely, more brides wanted their ceremony outdoors with the ancient oaks overhead. The screen of sunflowers planted along the property line helped since the neighbor's old eyesore of a barn wasn't visible.Last year Scarlett had talked Garth into letting Benji lay some stone for a center aisle and paved space for the wedding party to stand, citing things about women's shoes. Garth had begrudgingly agreed and Benji organized the work. Now they were turning an eye to the area where guests sat.Controlling the undergrowth was the name of the game. They'd tried laying sod and encouraging a thick blanket of grass, but the tree canopy was too thick to support grass. Which left the area prone to weeds. And that was why Benji was currently smoothing out what felt like a metric ton of wood chip mulch o

Chapter 79: Benji

Fifteen minutes later Benji pulled up in front of one of the historic old homes of downtown Ransom. The craftsman style house was one of those that dated back over a hundred years. The exterior charm made it look like it belonged on a postcard with the stained glass accents on the front windows and flower beds dancing in the breeze. These days, it was also where the leader of the town's L.O.L. Gang lived.Bunny Foster descended from old money and had married into new money. According to town history she'd caused quite a stir when she ran for-and won-the town's mayor race in the seventies. These days she still pretty much ran things, only she did it with her granny friends. Even the current mayor, one of the Morgan brothers, leaned on Bunny for her wisdom.Today Benji was hoping that wisdom could help him.He stood on the sidewalk, acutely aware of his dirty, sweat-soaked clothes.Crap.Maybe he should come back later. But that would mean chancing an encounter with Garth in

Chapter 80: Dixie

DIXIE MADE IT THROUGH her workday by hiding. She'd had one well-timed sneeze, followed it up with a cough and when one of her co-workers asked if she was coming down with something Dixie had said yes.It was amazing how many people hadn't needed her today. The downside was that she'd had almost twenty-four hours to spin her wheels and freak out.Benjamin Lively had kissed her.And she'd kissed him back.Dixie slid down farther in her seat as she passed the Ransom city limit sign. No one had said a word when she ducked out just a little early.A few minutes later she pulled into the parking lot at the Ransom High School and parked into a visitor spot. At least once a year Dixie made a point of stopping in to see Elisabeth's classroom. Looked like this year was going to be a special case of two visits.Dixie grabbed her purse, locked the car and headed into the school. Classes were out, and the halls were empty. She didn't bother going to the front office. Instead she hooke
