Chapter 61: How'd I Get So Lucky?

Emma still wasn't sure how she'd got talked into hanging out with the Portwood's for Thanksgiving. She had held her own, telling Jackson she wouldn't be hanging out with his family, and then all of a sudden she was trapped. They'd been talking football, and Emma was in the zone. She had been talking strategy, the lineup, who was the favorite and who should really win, and then Jackson snuck in asking her to watch the game with him. After she agreed without giving it much thought, she tried to bribe him into coming to her place. It didn't work, though, so she was stuck.Of course, Josh got wind of the fact that she was coming to watch the game, so the invite for the meal was back on the table. Not having the heart to tell him no, she finally agreed, but only if she were allowed to come and help out beforehand. Emma wasn't the best cook in the world, sure she could make a few easy meals if a recipe were easy to follow, but a turkey never stood a chance around her. She could, at least, of

Chapter 62: As In Cinderella?

Jackson lay by Emma as she talked with her mom on the phone. He was finally starting to get the whole phone call routine down. No wonder she had a billion ringtones. If he had that many people calling him, there's no way he'd be able to keep it straight. He could sense that there was still something off, though. It'd been a couple weeks since Thanksgiving, and something had changed for her that day. Jackson had tried to talk more about it, but she'd always put him off or changed the subject. He wished she wouldn't shut him out.The smile that lit up her face was the first he'd seen in those weeks. She put the phone on the bedside table and said, "Everyone decided against Chicago for Christmas. They're all heading to Mom and Dad's.""And..." he figured he was missing the point."And, that means I'm going home. I was so worried I wouldn't see them because I wasn't going to Parker's. With the limited space at his house, everyone just decided that it was best to have it at home."Cuddling

Chapter 63: Mini Van Convention

Jackson had been talking a good game, but as the plane got closer to Nashville, the more nervous he became. All the reasons he'd been excited about going to visit Emma's family were fading, and he was starting to dread what he might be walking into. Emma had been going on and on about how bad her brothers were, and while he had told her he could deal with it, he was starting to wonder. He could have handled a few days with them, but for some reason, Emma had talked him into a whole week with them. Since they were giving time off freely during the holiday in his company, he didn't have that excuse to not stay with her. To make matters worse, he found out everyone seemed to be fighting about where they were going to stay. At one point in time, her brother Matt had suggested that Emma stay with her parents and he stay with him. Thankfully that wasn't how things ended up. He had heard a lot about that particular brother, and he knew he didn't want to be caught alone with the guy. Jackson

Chapter 64: She's Still Got It

When Jackson woke in the dim light the next morning, he was sure he'd be alone for a while that morning. Who actually got up at six on vacation? He did. He hated getting up in the mornings, but now it'd been a part of his life for so long. Sadly, six was sleeping in. He thought maybe a run would be nice, so he pulled on his sweats and took his shoes with him to the living room. Only when he got out there, he wasn't alone. Olivia was up and already making coffee."Oh, hey, I didn't realize you'd be up this early," she said."I'm just gonna go for a run. I can't seem to sleep late even if I want to."Olivia nodded, "There's a good running path at the park two blocks over.""Good to know. I shouldn't be more than an hour."Forty-five minutes later he made his way back to Olivia's for a much-needed shower. Once he was finished, he changed for the day and found his way back to the kitchen to get a cup of coffee."Want something to eat?" Olivia asked."Nah, this is good.""So, I have to say,

Chapter 65: You're Happy Right?

At precisely nine-thirty, the gift unwrapping began. By ten, all nine of the kids had opened everything in front of them and were sitting in a sea of ripped wrapping paper playing with one of the many gifts they'd received. Looking around the room filled with family and love, Emma couldn't help but notice just how perfect the moment was."Soooo," Matt said drawing out the word getting everyone's attention as he stood, "Amber and I got y'all one more thing." He went around the room handing out identical, red envelopes and instructed everyone to wait to open them. Once everyone in the family had one, he gave the go-ahead to open them. The room was eerily quiet as everyone started to open them, and then there were gasps that broke the silence. Emma looked in awe at the sonogram picture of her new niece or nephew."Holy s-h-i-t!" Collin spelled out the last word. "Again? Haven't you learned your lesson yet? Next year I need to buy you a box of condoms for Christmas. Dad obviously dropped t

Chapter 66: Just Tell Me

Getting back to work after their trip was a welcome relief to Jackson. He had always been more of a loner and being around Emma's family was like being thrown in one of his worst nightmares. He didn't mind her family at all, they were pretty cool, but there were just so many of them, and it was so loud all the time. Even the fast pace of work was a welcome change to get him back to his calm world. The email that sat in Jackson's inbox both excited and bummed him out. Work had been crazy since he'd got back after the first of the year, and looking at the training schedule he'd been sent, it looked like the year would be jam packed. Dragging his feet, he finally got the nerve to walk into Emma's that night. He knew they needed to have a talk, but it didn't make what he had to tell her any easier. He thought about putting it off as long as he could, but the last time he'd done that, she'd flipped out on him, and they didn't talk for two months. When the door opened, he was hit with a wa

Chapter 67: Can't Blame A Man For Trying

Emma had been waiting for this night since Jackson had asked her to go to the formal with him. She loved getting dressed up in fancy dresses, pampering herself, and making herself look amazing. When she knew the man she was going with loved her as much as Jackson did, it made it even better. She had taken a half-day at work so she could go and get her hair done, and she'd even splurged and had a manicure and pedicure. She had been pampered from head to toe.She loved the dress she had found in Nashville, and she couldn't wait to put it on. Slipping it over her body she tried to get everything into place. It took some work to get it zipped herself. There were couple tries where her arms contorted in weird ways, but she'd finally gotten it. Taking a long look at herself in the mirror brought a smile to her face. The strapless ivory gown was so simple, but it hugged her curves and she felt like a million bucks. It was perfect. When she heard the front door open, she slipped on her heels t

Chapter 68: Thought You'd Never Ask

It was official. Time had sped up. Ever since Jackson had told Emma about all the training he was slotted for, time just raced for those dates when they'd be separated. Before she knew it, January was behind them, and he would only be around for another week before he was heading out for a month. Payton had been giving Jackson a hard time because he was set to leave just days before the baby was due. Jackson wanted to be around when his niece was born so bad, but it was looking like he wouldn't make it.All the teasing was getting to Emma. She wasn't upset with the leaving part. It was much deeper than that. She'd been thinking a lot about her future recently, and Jackson was right there in the middle of it all. Jackson told her how he wanted to be there for his brother and Payton when Sophia was born. Even though he didn't say anything, she could tell that just the idea of him not being there was bothering him. The whole situation was a dose of reality, like a shot of nasty, cheap vod

Chapter 69: Missed You

Emma was measuring time any way she could. Sophia was a month old. Jackson had been gone three weeks and three days. She'd been keeping herself busy at school, cleaning her place from top to bottom, and anything else she could find to keep herself moving. She'd even been over to babysit Sophia. Josh had finally talked Payton into going out for dinner, just the two of them, and Emma was more than happy to go over and hold the baby while they were gone. It had taken everything for the new mom to walk out the door, but she finally had. Payton had only been gone about ten minutes when the texts started to come in and then the phone calls started. Every time Emma reassured Payton that Sophia was still asleep in her arms and doing fine. It wasn't more than an hour before the door opened and the couple came back in."How is she?" Payton asked as she rushed through the door.Emma smiled, "The same as when you called to tell me you were on the way back less than ten minutes ago."Reluctantly sh

Chapter 70: Anything For You

Jackson pushed on his temple with his fingers trying to ease the pain. He'd had a couple MRI's since his incident with the door a couple months ago, and everything had come back clear. Even though everything looked fine, he still got a killer headache now and then, usually due to high stress. Things around the office were crazy, and he was trying to deal with everything as quickly and efficiently as he could so it could all be put to rest. The powers that be had decided that everyone from the unit wouldn't be headed out this fall. They had been cutting people from the roster left and right. He'd heard rumors from a guy he knew that he'd probably be flagged and taken off the list due to his accident. He didn't really want that to happen, and he made sure that no one knew about the potential of him staying behind. The last thing he needed was to get someone's hopes up only to have them trampled when it didn't happen later. He'd been handed a shit hand today. He had spent the day dealing
