Chapter 81: On Her Own Two Feet

EllieStaying in bed was getting unbelievably boring. Ellie didn't know how much longer she was going to be able to tolerate it. Luckily, she'd been cleared by the pack medic to get up once she could demonstrate that she had the ability to keep her balance while walking to the restroom and was strong enough to walk that far on her own without having to stop or getting winded. She'd just finished lunch when Sarah, the pack healer, came into the room with Luna Patricia."Hi!" Sarah said with a cheerful smile. "How are you, Ellie? Are you feeling okay?""Yes, I'm feeling great," Ellie said, meaning it. Her back was still a little sore, and she had some scratches that were pretty deep that hadn't completely healed, but other than that, she was in pretty good shape."All right," Sarah said as Patricia took the tray from her lap. She'd eaten all of her sandwich and most of her chips. Patricia would've made her anything she wanted and often spoiled her with delicious meals, but Ellie was tir

Chapter 82: In the Garden

RiverWaiting for Ellie to change clothes so he could take her outside seemed to take forever. River was determined to give her at least five minutes. Every time he looked at the clock, he felt like at least a half an hour must've passed, but it was usually only about twenty seconds."River!" He heard her voice from across the hall and darted over, ready to fly through the door and help her in any way she might need. But reminding himself that she was changing clothes, he stopped right outside. "Yes, Ellie?""I'm ready," she said. River took a deep breath and opened the door. She was sitting on the edge of the bed wearing some comfortable looking purple linen pants and a soft white, long-sleeved shirt. She had on white tennis shoes, and her hair was up in a ponytail. She looked every bit as lovely now as she had at the ball where they'd shared their first dance.Walking over to the bed, River offered her his hand. "All right then. Let's go."Ellie put her hand in his, and River pull

Chapter 83: Yoga

EllieSpending time with River had made Ellie nervous at first. He was always polite and never did anything to make her feel uncomfortable. The more time they spent together, the more at ease she felt, but he was certainly keeping his distance, and she wasn't sure why.It had been about a week since she'd started walking again and had gone outside. The healer had told her that she was ready to start training again, and River had volunteered to help her with that as well. She was dressed in workout clothes for the first time since before the attack, and while she was nervous about what might happen when she started exercising again, it was nice to be back in something that made her comfortable. She'd never been one for lounging around.River knocked on her door at 10:00 sharp, which was exactly when she'd been expecting him. She was fine to walk on her own, so she went over and opened the door, giving him a smile. He looked great in gray joggers and a blue T-shirt. "Good morning," he s

Chapter 84: Hurt and Worried

RiverHis ribs ached, and the cut on his forehead was beginning to burn as sweat seeped into it, but River refused to let Ellie know that she had hurt him. They were almost a week into her training, and her kicks had gotten stronger. He was using the pads now, but sometimes, she was so fast, he didn't quite block her kicks fast enough. The cut on his forehead had come when she'd knocked him back into the trees and a wayward branch had dug into his skin."Are you sure you're all right?" Ellie asked, hardly even breathing heavily even though she'd been working out for nearly two hours now. "We can take a break.""I'm fine," River insisted, not for the first time. "I'm just fine."She didn't believe him; he could tell by her expression. But he refused to back down. He would wait for her to say she needed a breather and then he'd rest.Ellie whirled around in a circle, kicking the pad with one leg and then the other. She was so quick, she was just a blur in the air. River had never been s

Chapter 85: Coffee Talk

EllieSpending the day with Shelby was great. It completely took Ellie's mind off of everything that had gone on with Blade. Her best friend truly knew how to make her feel better, even if she did spend most of the day talking about Carl. Still, as they sat in the coffee shop down the street from River's house, sipping their drinks while sitting on the patio outside. It was a nice, late fall day. The smell of the leaves, a fire somewhere in the distance, and a hint of the promise of snow in the not so distant future were all easy to detect with her shifter nose."So… how are things going between you and River?" Shelby asked, once she was finally done talking about Carl--for a few minutes."Uh… things are getting better," Ellie said with a confident nod. "We've been training together. We spend a lot of time together."Shelby raised an eyebrow at her and took a sip of her coffee. Ellie could tell she was expecting her to say more, but she didn't really know what else to say. "Have you k

Chapter 86: Bad News

River"Blade?" Ellie repeated. "What do you mean?"River hated to interrupt the nice conversation it looked like Ellie was having with her friend Shelby at the coffee shop, but he had to tell her what Alan had discovered when he was out on his patrol."That's right. Alan saw him and several of his warriors out in the forest between our two pack lands." River pursed his lips and waited for her to absorb that."That b*stard!" Shelby exclaimed before Ellie could say anything at all. "Let's go kick his a*s!"Ellie stared at her friend for a moment with one eyebrow raised. "Tell us how you really feel, Shelby.""I'm just saying, we should go get him right now before he can hurt anyone else," Shelby said with a shrug."I agree," Ellie said. "But the problem is, we aren't all organized yet. There are other packs that want to help. We need to come up with a plan to trap him between all of us so he can't get away, and we can't implement that plan just yet.""Why haven't you already come up wit

Chapter 87: Alpha Meeting

EllieHaving all of the Alphas from the tournament together in one room--except for the one they were getting ready to fight against--was a bit surreal for Ellie. She was glad to see all of them and counted them as friends, but it was also slightly awkward. She knew that some of them still had romantic feelings for her, and since he didn't reciprocate those feelings, it just made her uneasy. But at the moment, everyone was concentrating on the map River had spread out on a conference table in his office. "This is where Blade was last spotted," River said, pointing to a woodsy patch near her own territory. It made Ellie nervous to see that he was so close to her village. She'd alerted her pack and knew that they were all watching for him to see if he came anywhere near the heart of her packlands, but so far, none of the patrols had seen him. That was exactly how she hoped it stayed."I was thinking we could surround him there if we can confirm that he's still in that area. I will come

Chapter 88: Stalking Prey

RiverBeing out on the battlefield always got the blood flowing through River in a way nothing else could. He loved the thrill of battle, the rush he got from stalking his prey, and then the surge of adrenaline he always got before the attack was enough to make him wish he lived back in the days before the packs were as civilized as they were now. His mother used to tell him stories about his great-grandfather and how he'd conquered the area that was now his territory, taking it over and making the rogue wolves that had lived there for years become part of the pack or leave the area for good. Some of them had been ferocious fighters, but that hadn't stopped his great-grandfather from waging war against them and bringing his pack into this preferred territory. In his wolf form, River stalked across the forest, Alan and his Omega warriors spread out in two lines that spanned almost one hundred yards across. All of the attacking packs that were looking for Blade and his thugs were coming

Chapter 89: In Sight

EllieIt was good to be back in her pack; it was good to be back in her own territory. Not that she hadn't enjoyed her time with River and Luna Patricia. She had--especially toward the end when she and River began to spend more time together. He really was a wonderful guy, and she hoped to get to know him even better once this battle was over. But for now, she could only focus on one man--Blade.Being back in her wolf form was also exhilarating for Ellie. She had shifted a few times since her jump into the river, but for the most part, she'd been working out in her human form. In order for a shifter to be in their best shape in their wolf form, they needed to be strong in their human form. A weak person could never be a strong wolf, and a strong person was almost always a fiercer wolf than those who didn't hit the gym on a regular basis in their human form.Ellie stalked along through the forest that bordered her territory and spilled into the no-man's land where she'd encountered Bla

Chapter 90: Decision Maker

RiverBlade was moving. Whether he'd sensed that he was being surrounded, or maybe actually seen or smelled the other packs moving into position, the Alpha seemed to know that he had enemies moving in. Either that, or he had just decided to shift his location anyway. It was getting dark. Normally, shifters moved after the sun went down. It was also usually the best time to attack, but River and the other Alphas had decided it would be smart to try and catch Blade off guard. The fact that he was changing his location made River nervous. Carter wasn't quite in position yet, and Lance needed a few minutes more to get to his original position, but Blade was running to the southeast and Lance was coming in from the northwest, so the more Blade moved, the harder it was for Lance to get into position. At least Blade wouldn't be able to turn around and come back the way he came without running into Lance--theortically."Alpha River, Ulysses's pack is reporting that they're in position with no
