Chapter 211: Summerlands

"I know I joined the coven to practice magic," Kayla Lewell said from where she sat on her bedroom floor, twirling her copper hair with one of her fingers. Alex Barrister sat with her, his back against her bed, his legs folded and crossed in front of him. "To be honest, though, I never really thought it was all that real, you know? I just thought it was like meditation and the power of positive thinking. When we fought at that small neighborhood a few days back, it surprised me I could do anything."Alex shook his head at her. "You'd done small things before. You should have known magic existed. I mean, how long have you been practicing at the Murky Cauldron?"Kayla stared at him a moment, his dark, greasy bangs dangling in his dark eyes. Everything about Alex seemed dark. Dark eyes, dark shirt, dark clothes. Even his mood, at times, grew dark, mopey almost. Maybe, she thought, it came from being the only male in the coven. He never really stood a chance against all those women. Howeve

Chapter 212: Summerlands

Alex crab-walked backward, shoving himself out of Kayla's way as she turned, her normally bright green eyes a flaming red as she glared at him, her lips twisted up into a sneer. "Kayla, what the hell?" He slammed himself into the wall, pressing against it as he forced himself into a standing position, his hands out in front of him. Kayla opened her mouth, but the voice that came out was not her normal, soft-spoken tone. Instead, her voice sounded gravelly and deep, sinister and male. "The young witch is no longer in control." Kayla stood, her arms at her sides as she took a wobbly step toward Alex. The creature laughed as it examined the body it now possessed, glancing down at its arms and legs, touching itself in all the most vulgar ways. "I am Baltabek, and I now own this vessel." He jerked a hand out, flinging power at Alex.Alex rolled to the side, chanting as he stood, thrusting his arms out, repelling the creature's power. While he didn't want to hurt Kayla, he wouldn't allow w

Chapter 213: Summerlands

Rhychard jumped onto his back porch, rushing through the doorway of the sliding glass doors leading into his condo, which they kept open for Kree, so the coshey would be able to come and go as he needed. Renny had screamed once and then silence, and the silence terrified him. When he slid into the small living area of his condo, he saw Renny pressed against the wall, staring with wide eyes at something in the middle of the room. Pux and the other three gnomes stared at the same spot, but whereas Renny held a petrified expression pulling her face taut, they just looked confused."I swear, I don't see anything," Fist said, his tiny hands bunched into fists and shoved onto his hips. The gnome stood no taller than a child's action figure and looked just as silly. "It's just air. Who screams at air?""What's going on?" Rhychard asked, darting his gaze from Renny to the empty spot in the living room where she stared and then back to the gnomes standing around staring. "What the hell is ever

Chapter 214: Summerlands

Pux and the other three gnomes watched with pinched brows as Renny took another step away from Rhychard, screwing up her courage to face the ghosts. Rhychard watched her take a few calming breaths to steady her nerves. He stayed close, just in case she lost control again. She stood tall, arms straight at her sides as she faced the ghosts. "I know what you seek," she said, her voice holding a slight tremor. "But I can't give that to you just yet. I don't know how. I know you think I'm the bridge, but the bridge is out right now." Rhychard smiled at her attempt at being a smartass like him in the face of the supernatural. Everyone possessed their own coping mechanisms. She stood as if listening to something. Or rather, to someone. Her head tilted to the side a bit, her blond hair falling slightly, brows pinched over her nose. She nodded. "I know. I know you want to cross over, but I don't know how. I can't access the bridge.""Maybe tell them there's a toll, and they can't cross over

Chapter 215: Summerlands

Tansy tossed the book into the pile already teetering on her desk. "I can't find anything," she said in exasperation as she fell back into her chair. For the past three days, she had poured over every book she had in her personal library while the Lore Master Apprentice searched through the ones on the front shelves only to come up empty-handed. "I've searched every book I can imagine and nothing talks about people leaving the Summerlands once they arrive nor those of the living traveling there." With a scowl twisting her features, she stared at the pile of books in front of her, her arms over her chest. "If Rose is truly trying to reach us, then I think the only path left is holding a seance and trying to contact her." She glanced up at Wanda who hovered over her all morning."A seance, how exciting." Wanda clapped her hands and then rubbed them together. "I've never done one of those before. What do we do?"Tansy just shook her head at the older woman. Wanda always attacked everythin

Chapter 216: Summerlands

Laci laid in her bed, her head resting on the headboard as she stretched her legs out in front of her, a book, which she didn't feel like reading, in her lap. Her side ached, especially where the stitches were, and movement only seemed to agitate her wound. She had hoped reading would take her mind off everything, but even one of her favorite authors could not distract her from thinking about what transpired over the past few days. Her mother left her alone, deciding for once not to call out of work, and Jayden attended her classes at the local community college, leaving Laci alone for the first time since she left the hospital. If she was honest with herself, she feared where her mind would take her. Since leaving the hospital a couple of days ago, every time she closed her eyes, she saw Rose and Renny standing there, wrapped in coils of magic, screaming in pain, their bodies jerking and twisting in the air. Those screams kept Laci awake at night.Closing the book, she tossed it on th

Chapter 217: Summerlands

Famallumi sat on the floor of the Murky Cauldron, a pile of books scattered around him, while Tansy sat at her desk sipping some mint tea Wanda forced upon her. The elf arrived shortly after Wanda put the call out to the Valentine sisters about what happened, and he immediately started poring over the books on the shelves in an attempt to decipher what happened to the witch. Tansy turned him loose in her store as she always did, but inside she wondered why the Lore Master Apprentice didn't know more lore about things. He always seemed so shocked and amazed by anything that transpired in their world even if caused by a creature from theirs, that she wondered how long he had actually been studying to be a Lore Master.Wanda sat in a chair across from Tansy, her own hands wrapped around a chipped ceramic tea cup as she stared into the dark liquid. She gnawed on her bottom lip, her eyes bunched together as she struggled to come up with a reason for what happened, while never taking her gaz

Chapter 218: Summerlands

Rose Tillery hung in the air, unsure of what held her up there, or even how something could be gripping her. She struggled against the invisible bonds that wrapped around her, at least thankful that the coils of red demonic power no longer sizzled into her, scorching her flesh and making her body twist in spasmodic jerking motions. There shouldn't have been pain in the Summerlands, only peace and tranquility, while she awaited her rebirth. Yet, she had felt more pain since her death than before, and had yet to see anyone else in her family or among her loved ones since she arrived in the land between lives. Tears streaked her face, her throat raw from the screaming she did when she saw Laci, the warning she tried to give Kayla, the crying out to Tansy trying to get her to sever the connections between them until the demon, Baltabek, silenced her with his malevolent magic. She was alone again, which didn't make sense to her. Surely, there were others in the Summerlands, other souls wait

Chapter 219: Summerlands

When Alex and Kayla arrived at the Murky Cauldron, Kayla seemed huddled in on herself, her arms wrapped tightly around her waist as she stuck close to Alex. That part, in and of itself, wasn't unusual. Tansy had noticed the two of them drawing closer to one another over the past few weeks and it even made her glad. They both needed someone to lean on who would understand their unique quirkiness. Alex seemed to have the cooler head of the two, always eager to practice his craft or get lost in some idle conversation about some random tidbit of history, while Kayla seemed more introverted, shying away from anything or anyone who would demand something of her. However, today Kayla's reticence seemed even more heightened than normal, and the expression on Alex's face warned Tansy that something troubled him about his friend. He shot Tansy an imploring look and then quickly glanced at the smaller redhead as if hoping Tansy would pick up on his cues. Tansy sighed, realizing how lousy as of la

Chapter 220: Summerlands

Tansy stared around her, the floor now a field of high grass, the walls transformed into mountains, the ceiling replaced with a bright blue sky full of clouds and flying birds. She sat on the giant red pillow in the middle of the backroom of the Murky Cauldron; at least, that's where she knew was, but at the moment, it looked nothing like the back room of the witch's shop. Instead, thanks to Famallumi's magic, it had been altered to resemble the beginning of time after the Guardian and the other Elohim had left the world, and those who filled it, to their own devices."The human race was the Guardian's prize," the elf said, his voice an even monotone as he held his hands aloft, the scenes he described playing out around them, giving them a visual history lesson. "Some of the Seelie did not care to share the gods' creation with the Guardian's pet project. They thought they deserved the new world for themselves and sought to do away with the human race."The room shifted as creatures of
