Chapter 131

We'll see about that indeed. Ruth watched Kendrick stalk off and whip out a satellite phone. Darn it all. Did everyone have one but her? Although, who would she call? Carlie wasn't anywhere near a phone and she didn't need to listen to her mother's sobs. A heavy sigh escaped her as she sat down on a rock. "What's he doing?" Ruth asked Fernando who stuck close by. "Calling our boss, who will tell him the same thing he told Liam, that you're going. So don't worry your pretty little head." "Only would a gang of giants think to call me little," she muttered. Seeing Kendrick stalk back, a not so happy expression on his face, she braced herself for his ire. "You can't kill me. There're witnesses." Her quip fell flat. "I don't suppose you've changed your mind?" She shook her head. "Stubborn wench! Of all the stupid, ill thought, dangerous-" "But necessary," she interjected. "Did you hear the stupid part?" he yelled. "Better dumb than worri

I need a life. Or at least sex. Something to quell his ridiculous hard-on. Wandering back to Kendrick, Joel's mind spun, and not because of their mission. A scent, her scent, clung to him. The touch of her skin when he'd grabbed her arm seared his hand. Holy hell, the human's my mate. Or at least that was the most likely reason as to why his wolf took up howling in his head. A mate. A human. A chubby human. A freakn' Amazon of a woman with the waviest blonde hair, the biggest, bright blue eyes, a perfect handful of tits, rounded hips, and a height that wouldn't give him a damned crick in his neck. God, imagining those thick thighs of hers wrapped around him, squeezing ? Joel tripped over a root and went sprawling. His first thought? Shit. I hope she didn't see that. Wait, why do I care what she thinks? The fact he didn't want to appear foolish in front of her meant nothing. Blame that on the whole testosterone deal. No guy wanted to look inept in front of a gir

Chapter 133

Momentarily distracted by the female, Kendrick finally recalled his initial haste in finding the group. "Where's your guide?" he asked Liam, having met the other members of their group while setting up his sleeping roll and grabbing a bite to eat. "Right over ?" Liam frowned as he swiveled to look. "Hold on a second. Now that you mention him, I don't recall seeing him since your arrival." The news didn't surprise Kendrick. "Notice anything peculiar about him? Was he nervous? Did his scent seem off?" Liam shook his head as his face turned thoughtful. "No, but I'm assuming you have a reason for asking." "His father was leading Joel and me in the wrong direction. When I confronted him about it, he spouted off some nonsense about your group going where it was needed, then took off. We were worried he was leading you into an ambush, so we high-tailed it over." "Nothing weird other than his bailing on us. We are in the right spot, though, at least accordin

Chapter 134

Waking in the morning from dreams rampant with a glowering Kendrick and a smirking Joel ? in various states of undress ? Ruth crawled from her tent, her hair a tangle of curls, mouth pasty, dry slobber possibly on her chin, and her body much warmer than the climate warranted. Stretching in her tank top and shorts, feet already clad in her boots ? because it only took stepping on something squishy once to cure her of the bare feet she enjoyed usually strutting in ? she noted her companions already busy at work. Everywhere she looked, evidence of their camp disappeared as they packed up. "Thanks for waking me," she muttered, shooting Liam, the closest guy to her, a dark glare. "If it's any consolation, I just woke up too." Yeah right, she thought, eyeing his clean clothes, bright eyes, and combed hair. No one looked that good before seven a.m., not without prep work. Letting her gaze rove again as she sucked back a few gulps of water, Ruth caught Kendrick's eye. H

Would she just give up already? Kendrick had pushed them hard all day, waiting for her to break down. Stumble and not get up. Cry for mercy. Anything. He'd even readied his speech, the one where he said, 'I told you so!' A speech he never got to use, and which left him without a scenario he liked. Giving her to Joel to bring back to the village meant his friend getting mated without him, because he somehow doubted Joel could resist the temptation. Not acceptable. Letting someone else in their group take her back his wolf vetoed with a jealous snarl. Having her out of his sight at all also didn't appeal. The one plan he and his wolf seemed to enjoy best involved him carrying her out of the jungle. Screwing her silly in a hotel, enough she'd stay put until he got back from the mission they still needed to complete. But again, that plan meant leaving her alone. Unprotected. Vulnerable. He couldn't decide, so he did nothing. Not that it mattered when she ruined all

Best idea ever. Sure, Joel trudged through a jungle ? sweaty, confused, horny, very horny, but he couldn't say he was depressed. Didn't give a damn what his father was up to. Wasn't worried about proving himself better than everyone thought. However, he did have to wonder at his sanity as he mulled over the question of mating with a human. Humans plus wolves equaled extremely bad idea. Or did it? Others mated with humans just fine. Not all of those pairings ended up with a shifter going crazy when their human left. Heck, Kendrick's aunt married a human and they were still going strong forty years later. Could it work for me? The blame for his newfound interest in the question rested squarely on Ruth. Tougher than he'd have credited, she didn't once complain about Kendrick's forced pace. She bore everything with grace ? and killer looks. Literally. If she could have made Kendrick explode with her eyes, they'd be picking up pieces. It shouldn't have made him snick

Chapter 137

"Why are they fighting?" Ruth asked as she paused rummaging through her bag in favor of watching Kendrick and Joel duke it out. Peter shook his head as he walked past her with an armload of fronds. "Because they're guys." "You're a guy and I don't see you fighting." "Yet." His grin made her lips curve. "And they say women are hard to understand." She shook her head with a smile. "Hey, while I've got your attention, how important is sleeping in a tent, do you think?" "How do you feel about waking up covered in bug bites and looking like a lumpy troll?" "That bad?" Her shoulders slumped. "But I saw Kendrick sleeping under the stars last night and he seemed fine this morning." "Because he's got tough skin. Your soft skin doesn't stand a chance. I'm going to guess your question has to do with the fact you're still having a hard time with your tent." "No comment." "Here, let me help you put it up while they're busy." "Would you?"

Chapter 138

Kendrick didn't want to feel sorry for Ruth, he really didn't, but dammit all, did she have to look so disappointed, and worse, cry when they didn't find any decent clues as to her sister's whereabouts? It annoyed him that his first urge was to hug and console her. He restrained himself, and meant to ignore her, but he wasn't a complete ass. He could understand how Ruth missed her sister and worried for her safety. If it were his family, he'd have lost his mind. But understanding didn't mean he could let her bow to her sorrow, especially since he didn't see any reason for it yet. While he couldn't explain how he knew, Kendrick read the signs enough to know the kidnapped girls didn't suffer any abuse during their capture. As to after, only time would tell. The council didn't seem to think the girls came to harm, though. Needed help getting out of the jungle, yes, but on their two feet and not in body bags ? a certainty they wouldn't explain when they set him up to go on this missi

Funny how their mission had changed, at least for Joel. What started as a rescue operation was now widening to encompass safety for the lone human in their group. If they try and take her, they'll have to go through me. He almost wanted to dare them to try. Despite himself, Joel couldn't help the protective instinct. Human or not, and whether he liked the fact his wolf kept trying to claim her as mate, he wouldn't let anyone harm her. He'd die first. But who will protect me from her? That was the biggest worry of all. The more they traveled, the more he got to know of their fragile female companion, the more he craved Ruth. And not just her body, but her laughter. Her smile. The sweet color that rose in her cheeks when she got flustered. The way she studied things around her with such evident pleasure. How she handled her fear, with a shriek, but bravery too, as she squashed bugs that should never see the light of day. Forget the mating fever, he feared he'd gone past

Chapter 140

Maybe I should have stayed home, Ruth thought, not for the first time as she struggled with the stupid tent. Up in just a few easy steps, her rather large ass! She knew she messed up somewhere along the way, probably when Kendrick walked by carrying a large load of wood like it weighed nothing, his shirt stripped off to show a body that didn't spend a lot of time indoors in front of a television. The man could have modeled those washboard abs in a fitness magazine. Worse, he caught her ogling. Flustered, she ducked her head, but caught in the throes of an arousal she couldn't stop, she kept lifting her eyes to take a peek. Her inattention bore fruit as her hands did something to the unfolding tent, which now mocked her in all its lopsided glory. "Need a hand?" Wandering over, Liam cocked his head at the contraption and she could see he fought to hide a smile. "Am I that obviously inept?" "There's a trick to these things. Don't worry. I didn't do much better my f
