Chapter 121

For a second, Gina wondered what her new mate would do. He seemed so taken aback, even puzzled by the sound. He said nothing for a moment, but the purrs continued. "Um, Sheng? Are you alright." "I'm purring." He sounded surprised. "Yes you are. And I like it so long as that's not your, I'm about to eat you, sound." "Eat you? Seriously?" "Well, who can tell what with you being a big tough jungle cat and all?" "Are you mocking me? Or is this a not so subtle hint you want something?" "I would never mock my mate. Much. But I do want something." She wiggled against him, holding back a self-satisfied grin at his stirring cock. Now wasn't the time for round two, though, not with the sound of gunfire in the distance. "You say you're not a Persian, but I've yet to see your cat. Hint. Hint." "Soon, my she-wolf. I think the cavalry arrives." "Duh. I told you they'd come, but don't tell me you're going to just sit here and wait for them? Do you

Chapter 122

Jiao paced the living room. Leave me behind indeed. While Chris's concern for her wellbeing warmed her, his decision to not allow her to go on the trip, pissed her right off. Sheng's my brother. Who does he think he is making decisions for me? Her mate. My mate? The concept still hadn't sunk in yet. They'd claimed each other. Now until they died, they would belong to each other. She guessed that kind of gave him a little say in her protection, but she wouldn't let him stifle her like Sheng had. Poor Sheng. She only hoped he didn't suffer while in Kaleb's grasp. She could admit the plan had merit. Send Sheng as bait, wearing a GPS transmitter. Track him back to Kaleb's lair, then not only take care of the ring master, but dismantle his compound and free the other prisoners as well. When Jiao questioned Chris under her breath about numbers, laughter erupted from all around. "Don't worry about us. We have enough Grayson's and extended family to take over a small co

Over in the Rocky Mountains? The compound secured, the guards taken care of and the prisoners released, Sheng finally shifted back to his human shape and took the pants someone handed him, but not before he covered Gina in a long shirt that did more to display her assets than he liked. Thank God it worked. He'd initially balked at the plan to return to Kaleb's stronghold. His first instinct not fear for himself, but for Gina. Sure, as a cop her first instinct would probably involve saving the victims, but Sheng had a duty to keep his woman safe. But as Chris and his brother's so eloquently put it, "If you tell her no, she's going to do it just to prove you wrong. And kick you in the balls for good measure." All was well that ended well though. Kaleb had finally met justice. Sheng no longer needed to fear, capture at any rate. His new family on the other hand though? "Just how many people stayed behind in case Kaleb tried something sneaky?" Sheng asked. "

Chapter 124

The Christmas celebration rocked the house while music about Santa ho-ho-ing, jingled, and lights twinkled. Garish decoration abounded with every clich‚ known to mankind displayed from snowmen, to mangers, to a little village of penguins dressed in pointy red hats. God she loved it. Loved the chaos, and noise, the goodwill and food. Jiao maneuvered through the bodies, all shifters and mostly wolves given Chris's family predominated the place. But she did catch the occasional whiff of cat as Javier and Alejandro, accompanying their mates, mingled as well, their swarthier tones offsetting that of the predominantly Caucasian crowd. A handsome fellow, someone she'd not met before, bumped into her. His eyes lit with interest. "Well hello there, cutie. You must be new. I'm Joel." An arm curled around her waist possessively, and Chris growled. "She's already freakn' mated, Joel, so go pour the charm on someone else." "No. Not you too?" Joel's eyes widened in mock horro

Chapter 125: Human and Freakn'

Somewhere in the Lacandon jungle, a few days before Christmas ? Nothing screamed 'Wake up, dumbass!' like regaining consciousness to the fluttery warmth of something breathing moist air into her face. A living, breathing entity, which smelled both earthy and spicy ? covered in tickly fur. In other words, something that didn't belong in the shelter with her. Panic took complete control of her body. Despite knowing it was the middle of the night and pitch black, her eyes flashed open to see the intruder. In retrospect, she perhaps should have feigned slumber, given she now stared into a pair of glowing eyes ? one golden, the other a clear blue. Had she forgotten to note they glared ? probably with murderous intent ? a few paltry inches from her face? Not a good distance when it came to wild animals, especially with no bars to separate them. Should she freak? There's a plan. Scream my face off, get eaten, and become a tiny blurb in the paper. On to option two. Scre

Chapter 126

To Kendrick's surprise, his sister Naomi bawled worse than one of her babies at the airport when she came to see him off. Talk about out of character. Even worse? Hers weren't the only tears. Ma cried too, although, hers were thankfully silent. The big shocker? His gruff father showed a hint of moisture, which he of course blamed on nonexistent dust. Weight shifting from one foot to the other, Kendrick wondered how to escape the waterworks. "Geez, guys, it's not like I haven't gone away before." "But never so far," sniffled his sister. "And where there's so much danger." Good grief. Who took his snarky sister and left this emotional mess in her place? Sure, Kendrick appreciated the break from her acerbic tongue and strong-for-a-girl fist, but still ? The Naomi he knew didn't cry because her brother went on a trip. She celebrated because she got more of Mom's cooking to take home as leftovers. "I'll bring you back a present?" He asked this hopefully. Ow. He'd tak

Chapter 127

I'd give anything to feel cool again. Ruth fanned herself and wondered, not for the first time, what the heck she was doing traveling thousands of miles from home. Her family warned her not to go, her mother pleading with her to stay so she wouldn't lose another child. The authorities cautioned against it as well, but with her sister Carlie missing in the jungle and no clear answers from the people investigating, she couldn't sit still. So on a plane she hopped, traveling way out of her comfort zone, with her nerves strung taut, hoping that somehow, someway she might make a difference. Forget making a difference. I'm more likely to faint from dehydration. Not a breeze stirred the humid and heavy air at the airport, and the stench of hundreds of bodies ? sweat and perfume blending with the aroma of cooking food ? made her wish for the crisp cleanness of her garden at home. My oasis. People often joked they possessed a green thumb, but Ruth possessed more than that, or so pe

Haven't I had my share of bad luck yet? "What do you mean the group started without us?" Kendrick growled, not that the wizened old man before him seemed to care. "You were late. They left." Gnarly shoulders shrugged. "Because the bus from the airport got a flat." "Still late." "But I'm supposed to lead the damned expedition." "Then you should have set a better example and arrived on time," the old geezer announced all too smugly. "Well that's just freakn' great." And getting mad at the guide, the only other one available, unfortunately, wouldn't change a damned thing. It seemed things went downhill the moment after they stepped on the plane. Or as Joel joked, they must have offended Lady Luck because since their departure, they'd encountered nothing but problem after problem, which translated into delay after delay. It began with turbulence midflight. Forget joining the mile high club, despite the overt invitation from the cute fli

Oh. My. God. Yup, that about summed up the hotness level of the two guys who stepped from the jungle. Ruth had thought the current men she traveled with a good-looking lot ? Liam with his blond, Ken-doll appearance, Peter with his cocoa skin and beautiful smile, and the all too suave Fernando, his Hispanic heritage evident in his accent and flirtatious dark eyes. But these two guys? Damn! Hot freakn' damn. It wasn't a pretty boy cuteness that rendered them so appealing, though, but rather their innate ruggedness. From their short haircuts, almost military in style, to their square, bristled jaws, wide, superbly-wide shoulders, and perfect height, these two guys oozed testosterone. Confidence. Swagger. Hot, I-am-the-man, stuff. In other words, all the things that totally turned her on. Sometimes she hated her hormones. Why did she always find herself attracted to the impossible to attain type? So unfair, given her attraction was rarely returned. At six-foot-one,

Chapter 130

In the silence following her words, Kendrick could have heard his brother Stu fart from thousands of miles away. "A map?" Kendrick said. "What the hell are you talking about?" Cheeks pink, her gaze finally not challenging him, the Amazon-sized blonde ? with the most amazing scent ? dug a hand in the front pocket of her pants. "Hold on. It's not in that one. Let me try this one." She muttered to herself as she rummaged through her many partitions. Kendrick almost offered to pat her down, not to help but because his hands itched to touch her. Not a good idea. He tucked them behind his back as he watched her yank various odds and ends from her pockets before she finally pulled a Ziploc bag forth with a sheepish grin. "Got it." "Got what? Start explaining." "Not long after I got here, a package arrived at my hotel, addressed to me." She waved the plastic bag. "Inside was a note, bus tickets, directions to the last village, and a map." "What note?" The more she
