Chapter 71: The Tape

Pietro's funeral was held the following weekend at the local church. Waverly walked up the staircase and past the abundance of individuals gathered outside, mourning and discussing the life that he had led. Followed by Sawyer, Waverly entered through the large wooden doors and was greeted by a large photo of Pietro at the head altar surrounded by flowers. A guest book sat on a table right by the entrance beside another image of Pietro with his parents and grandparents outside of their family restaurant. Sawyer placed a hand on Waverly's lower back and led her towards a seat at the pews. They sat together and Waverly's eyes watched as members of the Crimson Shadows trailed in behind them, taking their own seats one after another. Once everyone was seated, the Pastor nodded at Sawyer to indicate the beginning of the service. "Hello everyone," the Pastor began. "We are gathered here today for what is a truly tragic occasion. Before we begin the service, as tradition, our Alpha will gi

Chapter 72: Mia

Waverly snatched the headphones off her ears and threw the cassette player aside, horrified by the tissue held in her hand. She tossed it directly in the trash bin and quickly stood; her head rushed, creating speckles across her vision and she gripped her forehead, straightening her other arm onto the table to catch herself. Once they disappeared and she felt ready, Waverly let go and made her way out of the bedroom and down the hall to find Sawyer. She wasn't exactly sure what she was going to tell him. Should she tell him that she just coughed up blood, or should she start with the fact that she was always unsure whether all of this was due to the pregnancy? When Dr. Stevenson first told Waverly and Sawyer that she was pregnant, it was like everything had been explained; her headaches, stomach pains, pale skin, and inability to heal or even shift. But as last month faded into this month, she got progressively worse and her symptoms intensified. Despite visits with Dr. Stevenson a

Chapter 73: Once Upon a Dream

Mia? Waverly paused. Wait, how did she know her name? Had they met before?"You're looking sicker than the last time we met," she said, dropping the flower. "Then again, I guess pregnancy does that to a wolf, doesn't it? Mind you, I wouldn't know." Waverly's mind whirred, but she suppressed all her emotion with a single gulp. "Who are you?" she repeated.Mia looked to her and sighed. "You know, as a Luna, your manners are something to be desired." Despite her lack of healing and changing capabilities, Waverly was grateful she could still sense danger when it was near and although she was fearful, she placed herself on guard. "You've been following me around town for weeks. I have a right to know who you are."Mia laughed. "Following you around? Don't flatter yourself. I'm merely in the neighbourhood for a friend."A friend? Could Waverly be wrong? But then again, why else would she be out here, in the woods alone? Something wasn't adding up."What friend?""Oh, just a recent

Chapter 74: Hallucinations

For the entire walk back through the forest and to the house, Waverly couldn't grapple with what had just happened. Did she make it all up? Was everything she had seen—Christopher, Mia, Pietro singing—was it all merely a hallucination? What was going on with her?On autopilot, Waverly followed Sawyer into the house and started taking off her shoes. Everything was a lie. She was ill to the extent that her mind had begun playing tricks on her and all of her demons had bubbled up to the surface to join in on this fiasco. But in the midst of everything, she wasn't sure if she was more scared that her subconscious had created this nightmare-ish fantasy, or if she was truly sick enough to be at the point of auditory and visual delusions. The closet door banged as it hit against its twin beside it, snapping Waverly free of her increasing fears. Sawyer sat on the bench in the entryway to remove his shoes. His movements were swift and forceful, and he struggled to undo his laces. "F*ck," h

Chapter 75: New Normal

Adjusting to life as it stood was more difficult than Waverly initially thought. As the week continued to pass by, it wasn't only the growing sickness that she faced, but also that Sawyer had barely spoken a word to her outside of short one-word sentences when she prompted conversation or in passing. In the year they had been married, and even prior to that, she had never seen Sawyer as upset with her as he was now. It would've been less painful if he ignored her completely—but instead, he still communicated with her in an indifferent manner and somehow, that made it worse. They sat together at the dining room table, eating dinner. Waverly's eyes flicked upwards towards where Sawyer sat. He kept quiet and ate his food without making eye contact. Waverly moved the food around on her plate with her fork, scraping the dish hoping to get a reaction. When she didn't, she set down her utensils. "Is this how it's going to be?" she demanded, staring directly at Sawyer. He looked up at h

Chapter 76: Return of the Dead

Over the next few weeks, the hunt for Pietro's cause of death had slowed in the town as citizens of the Crimson Shadows had come to believe the death certificate and obituary in the local newspaper that cited his death as a drowning. However, in Waverly's house, it was entirely the opposite. Sawyer spent late evenings and early mornings focusing all his energy into the reports and information he had gathered throughout the months from those who had known Pietro best or who had seen him last. Yet, with his death came the revelation that whoever had the nerve to murder a child, also was most likely the same person who burned down Tillbury's, which terrified the residents of Trinity Mountains. If they could kill an innocent individual, what else were they capable of doing? And to who? She set down the brush she had been using to comb her hair and pulled it back into a tight ponytail. Her reflection was no longer unusual to her; as the weeks passed, it had become so familiar, she cou

Chapter 77: Proceed with Caution

Waverly blinked her eyes. It was just an illusion—fake. Nothing about it was real. Only, when she kept blinking and the figure remained, she was less and less able to convince herself. Pietro stood still, but fear consumed his eyes. "You need to stop him." His voice was dark and husk, and Waverly sat frozen in her spot, completely paralyzed. "You can't let him go." Waverly's mouth was dry, and it took all her strength to find some piece of her voice. "I—P—Pietro…? You're not—you're not real. You're…dead." Pietro continued as if he had not heard her. "He can't go down there—Sawyer, if he goes, he will confront great danger." At this, Waverly's reflexes clicked in, and it was like her entire body broke free of the chains of fear and switched into gear. "Danger? What kind of danger?""A danger so great, it will place all at risk. But only you can stop it. You hold the power to end it all." "End all of what?!" Waverly said, pushing for answers. "Who killed you? What happened? Pi

Chapter 78: Lycan Pack

For the next day or two, Waverly was unable to shake the image of Pietro from her mind. Everywhere she went, she thought of him standing in the corner, soaking wet, with unprecedented fear making up his distorted features. She wanted to warn Sawyer and tell him everything she could, but with all that had been happening lately, along with her illness and potential hallucinations, she wasn't sure he would entirely believe her. H*ll, she wasn't even sure she believed herself—but there was no way she could take that risk. What if he was truly in some sort of danger? She had to find some way to make him trust her: the only problem was, how? Waverly walked hand in hand with Sawyer down the path towards town: half for strength support, and half for comfort. She observed the trees which were changing from green to red and yellow as the start of fall began to kick in. Her loose, long sleeved maroon shirt draped down her torso, absolutely covering any hint of a bump."Are you nervous?" she

Chapter 79: Homecoming

Sawyer's grip tightened around Waverly as she concealed her face into his body, muffling the sound of her tears to not disturb the celebration. "Here, let's go outside, alright?" Waverly nodded into his chest, still covering her face. Darren looked to Sawyer, questioningly, to which Sawyer bowed his head to assure him that all was okay before following Waverly out of the restaurant. Once the door shut and they were hidden by the wall of the storefront, Waverly faced Sawyer. Tears had smeared her mascara and her nose was beat red, standing out from her skin. Sawyer reached out a hand for hers and rubbed it. "What happened?" Waverly sniffed. She couldn't find the words. All she could think of was what Finn had said: "They don't know if he'll make it." She knew the risks of being an Alpha, but she never imagined in a million years that her father would face the consequences of his position. He was the strongest Alpha she knew, next to Sawyer. If anyone could handle himself in a

Chapter 80: More Than Fate

Waverly descended the staircase after an hour, making her way into the kitchen. The house was silent, besides the sound of the fridge door closing. As she rounded the corner, she saw Sawyer standing behind the island, alone. "Where is everyone?" she asked, somewhat disoriented. Her eyes were reddened, and she sniffled after she spoke. "Outside," Sawyer answered promptly, not providing further information. "Are you alright?"Waverly shrugged and laughed a little as she sat on the bar stool at the island. "Are any of us okay these days?"Sawyer opened the pack of pasta in his hand and put it in the pot of boiling water. "I meant with your own health, Waverly," he said rather seriously. He turned the dial down on the stovetop and faced her, slinging the cloth over his shoulder. "You weren't well to begin with, and this added stress could make matters worse. I'm surprised no one has said anything.""They have dad to worry about—knowing Finn, he probably is absorbed possibly becoming
