XX. A dangerous place

CaraThe bell gave a small ring as I pushed the glass door open. The place hadn't changed a bit, the same earthy smell -which was probably marijuana- , the same clutter, the same dim light illuminating the same smoky atmosphere. Kogo's shop was exactly the same as the first time I had visited, nothing was out of place.I could have sworn that that was the same glass of water I had seen during my last visit sitting at the table by the candles."Is she expecting us?"I asked Alice. My question was quickly answered but not by her."I am," the voice came from the top of the spiral staircase. There at the top of the metal flight of stairs stood Kogo. In her hand she balanced a tall stack of old looking books. She climbed down, enthusiasm in her voice as she spoke ," I have been expecting you, Cara. When you stepped out of my shop I knew our paths would cross again. You have questions. I know this time you will be more open minded."She was right, I had questions, many of them. When Alice co

XXI. Dearest

CaraA shiver ran through me. The wind was harsh and the sweater I wore hardly helped but I was still here. I wouldn't leave. The forest had become one of my favourite places to be, specifically the spot where Ivan and I first locked lips. The place had changed slightly, now it was colder and the flowers were not in bloom but I still liked it.It reminded me of a time when I was happy, when Ivan was the wonderful man who rescued me in the woods and not...not a vicious monster who I'd watched rip a vampire to pieces. The memory of his hands on me, his weight pressing on my body came back as the wind blew the forest's peaceful scent into my senses.I no longer feared this place. My love of it strongly overpowered my fear.I saw on the ground with my back pressed up against a tree trunk and my knee pulled up to meet my chest. This was my comfort position. This cannot be avoided any longer ,I tell myself. I was quite the procrastinator. For weeks I had managed to avoid reading the letter

XXII. A lost boy

CaraThere was a draft in the house, like a cold wind had blown past. I chose to ignore it, I had probably left a window open.Entering the kitchen, I shut the back door, making sure to lock it. Jasper's words were stuck in my mind, echoing inside it over and over again.I thought them through, calculating over and over again as if it wasn't such a simple statement, Ivan truly cares for you...Yes, he cared about me, he'd once -long ago -said he liked me. He attacked Hoff to keep me safe, if it weren't for him... if it weren't for him who knows what would have happened? The vampire would probably have drained me of all the blood in my body.Deep inside I was very grateful and thankful that he showed up when he did. Deep inside I cared for him greatly, what we had before, that doesn't just go away. It stays with you. There was no night I sle

XXIII. Never forget

JasperAbsent-mindedly, I listened to the clock ticking, eagerly waiting for the hour hand to strike midnight so that this wretched day may over.TickTickTickIt was now half past eleven. Thirty minutes left of this agony. The room was cold and empty. It was dark too. The only light that was on was the one on my desk, the one I was currently pretending to use.The walls were thick, thick enough for me not to be able to hear past them. They were made that way on purpose as were the walls of all the chambers on the South and North wings of the castle. The desk was filled with documents that I had to look at and papers I had to pass to Ivan. In the King's absence all his work fell on my shoulder, as his right hand man...practically even his own right hand. He was currently dealing with the hunt for Zoladie, a sorceress as old and as cruel as time. The woman was...slippery. She left no tracks, using powerful, ancient, untraceable spells to mask her paths and ways. As far as we knew she

XXIV. The old and the new

CaraAs the months faded away, I did too.I felt like a completely different person now, a ghost of my true self. This was weird considering that I had lived this exact same life before...before Ivan came along, before everything happened. As I stared at my reflection in the mirror I felt oddly bored. I should have been happy, but I wasn't. I felt like I wasn't doing what I was meant to do. I felt unfulfilled. The long black gown flowed down my legs, falling nearly at my feet, only inches away. My two inch, silver stilettos matched the diamond studs I wore. The earring were a gift from my father and the gems on them were real too, a few carats. I had been overjoyed when my father gave them to me just the night before, saying I would have to wear them on this day.My light brown hair poured out from under the graduation cap, cascading down my shoulders like a waterfall and reaching my waist. It had grown longer, I hadn't trimmed it in a while. My lips shined with cherry red lip gloss,

XXVI. Timeless

KogoBright light surrounded me as my body left the comfort of my boutique. It was as if I was floating in an empty space. I actually was. There was nothing around me. I was surrounded by heavenly colours. The kind of colours found above the clouds with blue, purple, magenta and black. This had always been my favourite portal.A lethargy began to take over my body as the portal asked its carrying charge. That's what a portal did to you. It sucked the life force out of as you moved throw it. Everything had its price, even magic, especially magic. For every spell there is a toll. This is to keep the balance of life, the balance of nature.I was not so sure my body could handle this task any more. I was getting old and age also has its toll. If I had it my way, I would never leave my house or my liquor cabinet. Sadly, I had to attend the stupid meeting. One day -soon- I would tell the other Princeps to go screw themselves.Screw you all! Fuck your godforsaken meetings.A smile tugged at

XXVII. Believe me

CaraGod, he's handsome ,I think, staring at the man before me. I had forgotten how breath-takingly handsome Ivan was. It was striking -his beauty. It never failed it amaze me how attractive I found him.Did everyone else see it or was it just me? No, they must have seen it too. Who couldn't?Ivan was handsome in a way that was different from the modern definition. Yes, you could describe him as 'hot' but that would not suffice. His beauty was old-fashioned and nothing like the kind seen in today's male models. The beauty he displayed was a dominating and mature kind. It took over your senses and it was not too boyish -not meaning that he looked old, there was nothing old about him.A cold wind blew past us but I hardly felt it, the warmth he radiated shielded me from it. The trees swished and I was reminded of my location and why I was here. How could I have forgotten? Ivan had distracted me from the matter at hand. Liza was missing and possibly in grave danger. A panic filled me aga

XXVIII. The dragon and the fly

CaraI was sat on the couch using my laptop, checking college admissions, so far I had gotten three, none of which I really wanted. To be honest, I had only applied to them in case I did not get into the one I really wanted, Balor.Balor was my dream school and I really wanted to get in. Sadly the application process was a whole thing. First you send in your credentials followed by a few assigned essays and then an interview. All I had to do was attend the interview on Saturday. Saturday because they like to see if the applicant is serious enough to attend an interview on a weekend. A good way to weed off the jokers.Dad was at work and my friends had left after breakfast that morning.Hanging out with them had been nice but Liza had been a bit off. It was probably because of what had happened the night. Maybe a hangover. A hangover was nothing the girl could not handle so I did not worry too much about the issue. The house was pretty much empty. I liked the peace and quiet. There was

XXIX.Vendetta

JasperThe fire burned furiously in front of me in an icy blue flame. Unlike an ordinary fire, it was as cold as Greenland's icy mountains, freezing you with its touch. It made the atmosphere similar to that of a crypt. Cold and unnerving. An unburning arrow stuck out from the flame. The arrow had been used to light the fire. By my calculations, it had from travelled beyond the castle walls, past the large opening where there should have been a wall and landed right onto the spot it currently was. The work of a skilled marksman. Or markswoman.Below the cold waves was a sign. A sign with an unmistakable message. It was as old as time itself and everyone knew what it meant. Revenge. Vendetta. The sharpness of the points of the star-like sign chilled my bones. This was the work of powerful magic.I stared across the room. It was evening now. Night was approaching. Ivan would soon be here. I greatly anticipated his reaction to this. He would either lose his tempter and break something l

XXX.Tattoo

CaraI dropped down, pain shooting through my knees due to the impact, but I did not care. I barely even noticed.Liza's form was cold. Freezing. I pressed my palm on her temple. She shivered under my touch. I was actually thankful that she did. It assured me that she was still alive. My breath caught as I took her in. She was covered in soil and grass. Her clothes -the same one she had worn the other night- were dirty and torn up. Her blonde locks were a mess. She was barefoot. Dry blood covered her hands and feet."Oh my God!" I exclaimed, my palm covering my mouth. How had this happened?Who did this? She was fine yesterday. What shocked me most was the gory cut on her left wrist. A deep anger accompanied my astonishment. I wanted to know whoever had done this to her.Was the work of a human or something else? Probably the latter.I felt defensive and protective of my friend in that moment, feeling a strong urge to find whoever it was that did this and exact a painful revenge on th
