CHAPTER SIXTY ONE

"You're so lonely, Ruby." Merri told her niece. The three year old girl did not seem to be paying attention as she played with her grass doll. Merrigold was doing her niece's hair. She flinched here and there but anything to pass time. The sun was hardly ever out but on that day it was surprisingly..."It would be nice to have some mates to play with around your age wouldn't it?" Merrigold said thoughtfully.Oh God.I'm losing my mind.I can not keep them, I can not.She was thinking about it again.Ruby responded with some incoherent mumbling. Merrigold smiled. "If they do turn out to be boys, they'd be bullies like their father. I'm afraid for you, Ruby." Merri could only think of Austin's toxic attitude and how he handled himself. She would personally rather not have to deal with him for the rest of her life. If she did it sounded like a long life of pain and misery. She could never imagine herself loving anything that she had made with that...man. He made her feel nauseous. A whif

CHAPTER SIXTY TWO

As weeks went by, Mrs Cunningham was acting a little strange. She treated Merrigold a little too gently. Merrigold felt suspicious and oddly uncomfortable with the way Austin's mother was suddenly treating her. She had always been a nice lady but now she was...very very nice. Faith watched from afar with envy, why did this white lady not like her as much as Merrigold? Faith thought about what her mother had said to her... no it was not her fault that she did not have the privileges that Merri had. It was all favor. Merrigold was favored and had always been and for that reason Faith hated her more than anything. Of all the children on the plantation, Mrs Cunningham had to bring Merri to reside in the house, teach her table mannerisms and all the math she needed to help out in the office. It annoyed her. Faith felt it was not her fault. If Mrs Cunningham has been a fair lady, then she would have treated Faith just like Merri. Faith remembered how she had changed her name the minute she

CHAPTER SIXTY THREE

"...Faith..." Mrs Cunningham entered the kitchen."I do not mean to offend you but uh, thought I'd make Merri a good Kartoffelsuppe..."Faith stumbled a bit, putting the small packet of rat poison in the straps of her dress. She gave the old hag a smile, feeling utterly aggravated. "No need, ma'am you deserve to get some rest. I'm nearly done as it is and uh whatever that maybe sounds delicious.""It's German Potato soup, I appreciate your concern but cut me some potatoes, onions, tomatoes, green pepper—""But ma'am, I've already—""Don't worry your silly head, you're expecting as well. Drink some, take it home, share with your mother and siblings.""I do not like soup. I'm not sure if you knew but us black people do not like soup. Merrigold might like it but that is because she is white... in the inside.""That is an awfully spiteful thing to say Faith."Faith rolled her eyes when she was not looking. "It is rather the truth. Merrigold is very Caucasian more reason she gets along wit

CHAPTER SIXTY FOUR

Austin and Merrigold walked back home in silence. It was nearing sunset. She did not want to speak to him, she did not want to pretend they were suddenly friends. Merrigold felt disgusted with herself for putting her lips on his. She was in a vulnerable state, for goodness sake she thought this was her end and her last seconds of life. The kiss reminded her that, this was indeed how she got in the same position she was in. Carrying his offspring. The thought of it made her feel muddled and out of balance. She was really carrying his child? When he looked down at her, her heart puddled with anxiety... this was the father of her child? Oh God. What a brilliant pick! She wanted it off, she wanted it out of her body. Merri wished her almost drowning had caused an abortion. Did she really want to die? CHAPTER SIX FIVE

Besides Merri almost taking her life, a lot happened that day. On her way home, Faith was stopped by Thomas. It was nearing six, she was glad Mrs Cunningham had let her go early. She felt a tad bit annoyed by his presence but none the less she stopped to hear what he had to say. They had not seen each other much, it was mainly her fault. Faith did not understand what was going on with her. She had wanted Thomas for so long and now that she had him... she did not want him. She had forgotten that she was carrying his child. Remembering how desperate she had wanted to fall pregnant made her feel ashamed of herself. Perhaps her mother was right. Merri got the valuable diamond while she was fighting for a worthless stone. He greeted her with a smile, she was quick to cut to the chase."I wanted to know if you're alright and if there is anything you may need from me as the father of your child?" He told her, the sounds of crickets... present as they merely stared at each other in the dark n

CHAPTER SIXTY SIX

"YOU'RE A WITCH!""How could you be so heartless, what has he ever done to—" The woman stuttered as the tears overwhelmed her ability to speak. Her legs gave in as she felt to the dusty compound not far from their baroque porch."Mama please..""No Kifah leave me.." The women cried rolling on the gravel yard in front of the Cunningham mansion. She did not care for her clothing or the dirty, she did not care because none of it would bring her son back to life. She felt so much anger, if she was to die today, she would gladly. Waking up to her son laying cold had to be the most horrifying thing she had ever experienced in her entire existence of living. In her entirety life of being a slave, she had seen a lot, ill treated and unjustified from an early age... but none could compare to losing her son. She only had one person to blame and it was Mrs Cunningham the witch, who had poisoned her son. Kabangu had always been a healthy boy, was never one to fall sick out of the blue... she was

CHAPTER SIXTY SEVEN

"Nothing absolutely nothing ever goes well for me, clearly I'm not meant to be happy. What is this life...""Things could be worse..." One of stable workers told him."I was going to be a father, I was willing to try and make it work with her but she... all along she was conniving to hurt Merri. She did all this to hurt Merri. Her falling pregnant and everything... none of it was genuine. Now my child will be born destitute to a mother on the run." Thomas could not help the tear that escaped his eye as he stared at the wooden door, a compartment for one of the horses in the stable. He held his knees close to his chest. His friend was standing, peeling an orange. He seemed unbothered by Thomas crying in one corner. Peter seemed amused."That's if the child even survives past pregnancy. Faith used to do my brother some favors. He is married. I sort of figured from then on that she was not the type of girl to mess around with." Peter told him with a shrug. "She killed her own brother, sh

CHAPTER SIXTY EIGHT

Mrs Cunningham walked in the guest room that they had been set up for her, the lamp was dim. It was quiet except her mild sobbing against the pillow. The bed was twice the size of her old mattress. Much more comfortable but nothing could fill the emptiness in her heart. Taking a seat on the right side of the bed, Mrs Cunningham scanned the food that was set aside, the flies roaming over. She had not touched any of it. Merrigold wore a cotton comfy nightdress long sleeved on the arms, it reached her ankles. It smelt like lavender, it was Mrs Cunningham's. It fully accommodated her visible belly bump; that she had tried so long to confine. Every time the door opened her heart skipped a bit. She knew he was coming to crucify her. She hated him so much. The thought of him, brought her tearful sorrow. The thought of him reminded her that she could never ran away from him and his misery. The thought of him reminded her that, if they had never crossed paths her life would be different. Mores

CHAPTER SIXTY NINE

She blinked her eyes open staring at the Georgian decorated ceiling. One of the housekeepers had opened her curtains, the sun went straight into her direction and burned her eyes with discomfort. She slept stagnant in one position unmoving. She did not move but it was moving. She huffed, annoyed to death. It had been moving more than usual lately. She had looked around the room for anything sharp enough to cause her death. Nothing, unfortunately. She stared at the same painting for hours, it was disturbing. She hated it. Fresh lilies were out on her bedside every morning, the smell was awful, it made her morning sickness even heavier. There was a soft knock. In he entered, startled... Merri immediately grabbed a pillow next to her and put it in front of her stomach. He didn't look too well, the eyebags beneath his eyes. As pale as a ghost, he took small steps towards her bed."I did not say come in.""William will be here soon, to check up on you.""I did not say come in.""William is

"Eddie..!""uhm...A-austin..?!""Looking good, I see my sister is treating you well."Confused at his brother in-law being so very generous and bubbly, Edward stumbled a bit. Austin Lionel Cunningham not being a gritty brute, with a sardonic response for everything. Austin actually smiling...How odd."Uh yes, ofcourse." He responded. "What brings you here?""Well, I have some great news to share. It certainly could not wait." Austin smiled at the thought of it."Share already?" Edward chuckled."My sister first!" Austin grinned not being able to contain his joy. His smile, not being able to be hidden beneath his once intimidating demeanor. Even though he was craving to blurt it out already. Who would have thought that he would one day be excited for a child of his own? Seeing William father Christian had gave him some sort of envy, he did not want to entertain the thoughts as he felt he would be betraying the old Austin who did not feel capable enough or deserving enough to be anyone
