CHAPTER THIRTY

"Do you want to maybe take a walk...?"I shook my head."Just to get some fresh air and stretch your legs."With my somber face pressed against my pillow, I shook my head."Anything you want maybe? I can surely get it for you. Even if it means Faith has to steal from the main house... the fancy white people stuff." My sister in-law joked. I only turned to look the other side."You can talk to me about anything, Merri. Anything what so ever. I know this isn't easy and it won't be easy but I'm here for you. We love you, Thomas and James love you and they will be back soon. Everything will be alright.""I-I'm f-fine." I told her, clearing my throat as I had not spoken in a while. It felt odd, my throat hurt. My tears had dried up, my lips were dry. I licked them feeling the rough patch that had mounted on from my lack of care. My nose was oily, my eyes were dull and gloomy."Oh good lord Merri you spoke, I'm so glad. I was beginning to worry. Do you want me to undo these cornrows and mak

"You're a despicable human being!" Thomas spat in Austin's face. With his hands tied behind his back, Austin could have easily taken advantage of the situation but he wouldn't stoop that low. CHAPTER THIRTY TWO

Accepting her fate. Merrigold packed the little that she had as Grover stood by the door. Miriam and James begged her not to leave but she told them she had to. She smiled widely and told them she had healed and was ready to continue with work and her life. With knowing what Austin was capable of, she did not delay. Blaming herself for every misfortune her brother and Thomas has went through, she decided it was only right to give them a break and for her to deal with her fate. Thomas had told her that he would always love her but he needed space to think and properly feel out all the hurt. He could not keep it all bottled up, her face reminded him of her betrayal. Merri was afraid, if anyone had to suffer... it had to be her. She knew if she did not go, he would only look for a way to hurt those close to her. She did not want to play any games like before, or entertain anything. She simply wanted to give the people she called family, their peace. Merri felt as though she had been a bur

CHAPTER THIRTY THREE

I could not sleep that night. I could not dare close my eyes as I resided with my perpetrator. A part of me feared that he would come as soon as I let my guard down so I did not. I busied myself, did as much cleaning as I could around the forsaken house. I wanted to forget it all, if I could. I wish I could. I felt void of everything. I wondered where I'd beget the strength to be here in this very same house. My tears refused to fall, my throat felt dry and a bitter taste of metallic dazed me as I bit my lip harder than I should have from anxiety. I refused to remove my jersey for it would display my bare scars and wounds that I hid underneath. Everything seemed to be going alright for the rest of the day except for the pitiful stares that everyone gave me. Lady Bertha then came in a hurry to drop off her kids, claiming she was still not on speaking terms with her brother but at this point she was desperate and had no one to leave them with for the weekend. My loneliness was overjoyed

CHAPTER THIRTY FOUR

"Hey Thomas!!""...morning...""How are you doing today?" I said as enthusiastic as possible. With a sigh, he tied the horse and moved away to the next."I said how are you doing today Thomas?" I followed along."...fine thank you.""Star gave birth again.." I tried to make a conversation."...as you can see...""Mhm...they must be the cutest, may I see them?""...I'm working, Merri...you should get back to your own swindle..."Swindle? Cheating, stealing, blackmailing... the word could mean so many things but it still made me upset. It made me feel unworthy of being in his presence. Everything was tense, it had never been this way... it felt odd not speaking to Thomas about anything or whenever I wished to."I see you got some new pair of shoes..." I smiled, sidling behind him as he walked away with a bucket of manure. I followed along eagerly."...borrowed from Grover... suppose it's from all the pity...""Oh... they're really nice, must be comfy too.""Yes, Merri they're!" He repli

CHAPTER THIRTY FIVE

"We never have to speak of it, if you wish not to." Austin told her the day before when they parted ways from the comfort of deceit they had both slept in. He did not want to but he had to. Austin had never felt such pleasure in such an unforgettable rush. It crossed his mind more than it should have. In those moments, when she needed him. She wanted him and it had always been something he yearned for... her desire for him. She was out of limb, vulnerable and wanted him to be with Austin and to have him hold her in the most intimate manner. Gulping down a feeling of hysteria thinking of the way she looked at him with every stroke. He couldn't help it, Austin couldn't. He had to give her whatever she wanted. Whenever she looked at him with those doll eyes, he was left feeling helpless, she could tell him to jump off a cliff, at which he gladly would. It was the only time as of recent that she let her guard down and the speck of hate her eyes always held for Austin disappeared for a whi

CHAPTER THIRTY SIX

"I'll be gone just for a little while...""That's odd." My brother said with concern. "You've never been off the plantation what if you got harmed? You certainly can not trust that man...? What if he is planning to murder you where it is you're headed even worse sell you off. You're not going anywhere Merrigold, I refuse!""Y-you can not tell me what to do?! I'm only going because it's my duty to help with...uhm...the many things I do...you would not understand James. I'm well skilled, somewhat educated and that is the reason why he has chosen to me and no other for this voyage.""You sound delusional, what is it that he did to you upon your return? You're not going anywhere!""I'm leaving at dawn, just thought to inform you." I crossed my arms."Merri...!" Miriam, my brother's wife said trying to calm him down as he was already fuming with anger. Knowing him, I thought it was simply to give me a scare."Where is your head at this point and time?" James growled at me, massaging his te

CHAPTER THIRTY EIGHT

William advised nothing properly heals the heart with content and fullness than a letter. I'm not a Shakespeare, I'm simply Austin the child in your eyes (please note I say this as I roll my eyes). Well, I suppose I've already ruined this part of the love letter. I'm frustrated, angry and so many other woes. I might be seventeen in age but I'm older in mindset by years. You belittle all that I have to offer, always. It rather... makes me livid. Henry is an twenty-eight year old geyser, he does not do much for you. When you cry, I'm there. When you're sad, I'm there. Whenever you need me, I'm present as should be. Where is Henry? God knows. You and I could be together, I do not care for my lousy brother. He pisses off when holds you, caress you, glances... it hurts that I have to watch that sham of a marriage when I love you this much, with all that I have.To God forbid, one of these many days... when he pisses me off, I will have to deflate his ego with mentioning his infertility. I'

"Aunth Thella!" Mandy chanted excitedly. Still feeling a tad bit awkward, Stella looked at the little girl. She felt as though this was her punishment but Mandy did not deserve this, she did not deserve to be born this way... she was so innocent. Mandy did not have much of a big vocabulary but she did know Stella and she adored Stella even though, she did not visit often. Stella would always be thankful to her forty-eight year old sister who took care of Mandy all those years and cared for her like her own. Her sister was a widow at the time and she did not mind some company. Even after finding out Mandy's rare condition at the time, Evelyn still took the little girl in and cared for her.Her flattened face especially the bridge of her nose. Her almond shaped eyes that slant up... the tiny rare grey in them reminded her of someone special, someone dear to her. The tiny white spots on the iris of her eyes. Her short neck that made it hard to turn from time to time, small ears... that g

CHAPTER THIRTY NINE

"Home sweet home!""But it's empty..." Merrigold said a bit eerie, looking around the beautiful elegant home that belonged to Austin before his departure to help manage the plantation. It had been a three hour ride, exhausting as if she had never had to sit still in one place for that one... better yet travel else where."Perfect!" Austin replied. "Do not worry, there is a bed.""How long have you lived here... it's so...secluded..." Merri asked, swiping the dust off the counter of his fitted lounge cabinet. The dark wallpaper made the room, rather the house feel gloomy. She had never imagined how Austin's house looked like. She never even thought he owned a home."I'd rather not have neighbors..." Austin said wearily, walking around as he took steps the titles creaked."What if you suffered from a stroke and you needed help..?""Then I'd die, love, then I'd die because it will be my time.""Nothing scares you... it seems.""...there is..." Austin added. "But I will not tell you that.
