Chapter 21: Proving Your Innocence Isn't Easy

"What are you doing, Miss Clancy?" Martin asks, looking down at me.I've ducked down so I can look around the corner. I don't want anyone to see me. It might be the weekend but that doesn't guarantee that the company is empty. For one thing, I'm pretty sure Noah will be in his office."SHH!" I whisper. "You can't call me that.""There's no one here. It's eight in the morning on a Saturday." The way he says it, makes it clear he would much rather be at home than here helping me.I don't say anything as I get back up, darting down the corridor as quick as I can.Martin's eyebrows are sky high. I probably look ridiculous. I'm wearing sunglasses and a scarf around my head."What do you look like?" he asks, rolling his eyes at me.I've known Martin since I was a little girl. He's more like an uncle than my grandma's assistant. Grinning at him, I pull the scarf closer around my face."Don't I look pretty?" I ask, trying my best to keep a straight face.Laughing, he presses the call button fo

Chapter 22: Self Sabotage

I mope around my apartment for the rest of the weekend. I still haven't fully unpacked and so I decide to make a dent into the pile of boxes currently taking up residence in my living room.On Monday morning, I dress for work even though I'm not sure if I should go in. Martin didn't seem to think confronting Noah was a good idea. I've never been one to avoid conflict but I've never been suspended either. The CCTV still photo is sitting on the coffee table. Would Noah really give the design to Holly though? He got so angry at me, just for talking to her, it's hard to believe that he'd be the one actually passing the information to them.Picking up the photo, I put it in an envelope and grab my handbag.I'm still angry and even if it does turn out that Noah didn't do it, I still want to have my say. I'm being stubborn but I don't care. I'm not going to just sit here and wait for him to fire me.Slamming my apartment's door behind me, I rush down the stairs and onto the street. I hail dow

Chapter 23: Dedication To Your Pay-Check

Noah's POV:She must be insane! In what world would I sabotage my own team? She's not moving though. Eden Winters is ridiculously stubborn and she's showing no signs of backing down. How can she even keep a straight face while making such utterly absurd accusations? "It doesn't make sense," she says. "Your problems with Team Two pre-date my arrival at the company. It's far more logical that you or someone else in the department are culpable.""You're delusional," I bite out angrily. "Why would I sabotage myself?""Dunno," she says, shrugging her shoulders again. "I didn't say you did, only that you could have."I open my mouth to respond but she's too quick."You tried to fire me without any evidence, just an assumption. Based on your logic, you should be fired too.""But you're not fired," I retort, "so you're splitting hairs.""Only because I actually know my employment rights," she comes back. "You wanted to fire me.""This is pointless. You're wasting my time.""True," she agrees.

Chapter 24: No One Refuses A Free Meal

Eden's POV:I should be happy. I'm innocent and Mr Grisham knows it.Now that Stacey has left, neither of us say anything. He should be apologising. He should be giving Stacey the same treatment he gave me. Not that I want Stacey to be fired. I really don't. The double standard just upsets me.He didn't even hesitate to believe her. He took her word for it without a second thought. Even though they've worked together for a few years now, it still hurts. He wasn't even willing to give me the chance to explain myself and yet he outright refused her resignation even when he knew she was at fault.I wait for him to say something. Anything at all. Even if it's just one word would be better than this. But he doesn't and I'm disappointed. He wasn't kidding. This is a waste of time. As confidently as I can, I stride towards the door."Where are you going?""Home," I reply."What? Why?" He at least has the good grace to look awkward."You told me to leave.""Yeah but…""But what?" I ask. "I'm s

Chapter 25: Apologies

For the most part, things return to normal over the next few days. We're all working overtime to come up with a replacement product and things are a little frantic as we feel like we're rushing towards the submission deadline with no idea what our final product will be. The department's morale is a little low but they're all determined to make a success of the replacement product, if only to prove that they won't be beaten.Things are tense between Noah and me. We're barely talking, only saying enough to be considered civil. Fortunately, we all spend most of our time in the conference room together so our awkwardness goes relatively unnoticed. He's apologised and I've reluctantly accepted it, but it doesn't do much to change how I feel."Eden, do you have the revenue report for last month?" Noah asks softly. He's been extra polite over the last couple of days, as if he's scared of offending me."Yes," I answer, passing it to him without meeting his eye.He continues talking about the t

Chapter 26: They'd Sell Like Hot Cakes

"Eden, can you come in here?" Noah calls out through his open office door. It's late and for the most part the department is empty. Entering his office, I come to stand at his side. He's standing with his back to the door, looking down at something on the desk. Laid out on his desk are the team's design ideas for the replacement product."What do you think?" he asks without so much as a glance my way."About what?""Which do you like most?""Er… This isn't really something I know anything about.""You made the right call last time.""I made a passing comment.""Yeah but it was right," he replies, giving me a sideways glance."I like the hanging sofa," I tell him eventually, "but if I'm honest, I keep thinking about the echo-friendly tents.""What about them?""It's potentially a whole new market," I tell him. "Clancy's Comforts doesn't do outdoors, for one thing. But also, if we can start a range of echo-friendly products, it could be huge.""Yeah, I think so too," he says, rubbing his

Chapter 27: Moody Jerks Shouldn't Look That Attractive

The rest of the week sees the team holed up in the conference room. As I suggested, Noah has split the team in two and now there's a competitive edge to everything they are doing. They've placed bets on which design will bring in the most money when they finally go live and the mood has definitely improved compared to how it was at the beginning of the week.Holly passes by several times, clearly snooping but the team are highly original in their tactics for distracting her, doing everything from spilling coffee on her to practically forcing her out the door with a fake note from Mrs Clancy for Lewis Artie.Stacey jumps to her feet. Dragging me from the conference room, she whispers in my ear, "Holly's here. Don't look."When someone tells you not to do something, what do you do? You do it, right? Instinctively, I look up and Holly looks like she's on the war path as she strides towards us."I wouldn't go in there if I were you," Stacey tells her, sidestepping her."Why not?" Holly as

Chapter 28: Working Late

It's almost home time on Friday night and the department is quietening down as everyone leaves, excited about their weekend. I'm in no hurry though. I don't have plans for the weekend and strangely enough, I quite enjoy this job.Any minute now though, Noah is going to come out of his office and tell me to go home. He never works late on Fridays. Unlike me, he must always have plans.I begin collating the department's weekly complaint log even though I know it's a long winded task. There's no way I'll have it finished by the time Noah finishes for the night. I might just stay late. It's not like I have anything better to do.Perhaps I should have taken Stacey and Rob up on their offer of going out for a drink but I hadn't really felt in the mood for socialising. I'd also had an offer to go back to my grandma's house for dinner but I'd told her that I wasn't sure when I'd be finished at the company.I'm not sure why I feel so deflated at the idea of spending the weekend away from the co

Chapter 29: Monday Morning Blues

I arrive early on Monday morning. I'm not really sure why. Except that I'm excited. I want to be here. I'm eagerly waiting for Noah to arrive. I'm trying not to think about why I want to see him. I spent most of my weekend wishing that Monday would come quicker.Logging into my computer, I impatiently wait for it to load while making a mental note to recommend grandma updates the company's IT system.Glancing up frequently, I tell myself that I'm not looking for Noah. I quickly go through my emails, surprised to find several emails from the complaint department. Usually, I don't hear from them except for on Fridays with the weekly complaint log.I click to open the first email just as I notice Noah making his way towards me. He's carrying two coffees and he's actually smiling. It's disconcerting. He never smiles on Monday mornings. Hell, I'm lucky if he doesn't spend our Monday mornings screaming like a banshee at me."Morning," he says with a strange amount of chipper as he places one

Chapter 30: Buying Time

"They want to recall it?" he blurts out angrily and like that his good mood vanishes.Sighing, I tell myself I should have gotten evidence. There's no way the rest of the team will believe that he was actually smiling earlier. His hand covers mine on the computer mouse as he scrolls down. There's even less room between us now but he's completely focused on my computer screen."Eden, I need you to get the advertisement department on the phone," he says authoritatively. "They can't just recall the entire line.""Yes sir," I say, picking up my phone. He pulls away, rushing back around my desk before disappearing into his office. I'm kept waiting on the phone for a while. It would seem that no one in the Advertising Department has arrived yet. Glancing at my watch, I grow frustrated. It's not that early. Our team have started arriving, waving at me as they make their way to their cubicles."Any luck?" Noah pops his head around the door."They're not answering," I tell him."Right, grab the
