Chapter 41

That afternoon Don had hurried across the street to the bank where he kept his expense account for the business and withdrew four thousand dollars. She was still sitting where heÕd left her when he came back and the waitress had placed his regular order in the place across from MelissaÕs. He looked at the food and back to her. ÒI told her it was okay to put it there. I even covered it to protect it from flies.Ó She explained. He slid back into his seat and passed the envelope full of cash to her discreetly. ÒWhatÕs this Melissa asked as she looked at the envelope suspiciously, though she already knew what was in there. It had the name of the bank and its logo on the flap. ÒYour rent and a little extra.Ó SheÕd just looked at him, and back down at the envelope. ÒI donÕt knowÉÓÒOh please take it.Ó He was begging her to take his money, just what she wanted, but she wanted more than a one-time payoff. ÒAnd what do I owe you for this kindness?ÓÒIÉI just want t

Chapter 42

Detective Celia Sparks left the station house and headed for home. Ever since the murder case a few weeks ago life has been going nonstop and she was wishing for the days of old, when nothing more exciting than a brawl at the pub between one of the locals and a bewildered tourist needed her attention. The case had garnered her more publicity than she was comfortable with, even a write-up in the local paper. People called out to her on the streets now more than ever and for the first time it was as if sheÕd finally been accepted into the fold. It had only taken three and a half years. As much as she hated her new notoriety and the fact that a woman had been murdered while yet another had taken her own life, there was one good thing that came out of the whole horrible situation, and that something was Riley OÕRourke. The man sheÕd been crushing on since moving to the small town. It started the night she went to his home to tell him that his wife, who sheÕd arrested o

Chapter 43

Celia didnÕt breathe until he turned and walked away to climb onto his horse. Oh boy, she thought, sheÕd read a whole lot in that look and now that they were here, at this point she never thought theyÕd reach she was terrified. She was surprised to learn that she wasnÕt prepared. At least not for anything approaching the heat sheÕd seen in that look he just gave her. There were times in the past few weeks when she wasnÕt sure where they were going, so sheÕd prepared herself to be friend zoned, telling herself that that would be enough, and knowing that she was lying to herself. But in that look sheÕd seen something, something sheÕd longed for since the beginning but was afraid to reach out and take. SheÕd convinced herself because of the ease with which theyÕd slid into the nightly phone sessions that friendship was the most she could hope for. No man ever opened up like that to a woman he was interested in surely. But now she wasnÕt so sure anymore. He made some k

Chapter 44

Melissa checked her bag one last time to make sure she had everything she was going to need for the evening ahead. Her pulse raced with excitement and she had to stop and take a deep breath to temper the giddiness she felt. ItÕs been two weeks since she started her new clandestine relationship with Don and just like sheÕd suspected from that first day in his office, he was into being dominated by a woman. SheÕd pushed the envelope more than once to see just how into it he was and realized it was more than just a fetish, but the way his sick brain was programmed. She didnÕt care as long as she got what she wanted out of the deal. If he wanted to be tied up and whipped, even talked down to and berated, who was she to judge? SheÕd never done anything like it before though, but she figured it couldnÕt be that hard. He never came right out and told her what he wanted, too chicken shit she supposed, but so far heÕs been loving everything sheÕd brought to the table.

Chapter 45

ÒCome straight to the farm after work.Ó ÒWhy?Ó There was no answer coming from the other end of the line, nothing but dead air, so she took the phone away from her ear and looked at it before putting it back to her ear again. ÒAre you there?Ó ÒYes!Ó ÒDid you hear me? Why do you want me to come straight there from here?Ó Again there was no answer, and she finally caught on. SheÕd noticed in the last few weeks since that sunset horseback ride that heÕd started to change. He seemed to be coming out from beneath the dark cloud that had been hanging over his head. She wasnÕt sure if this new stubborn, possessiveness she sensed in him was the real him, or a by-product of all heÕd just gone through, but she knew she was feeling the brunt of it. So when he didnÕt answer and didnÕt budge from his stance, she decided it was best to give in. HeÕd shown her the day before that he was more than capable of going to any lengths to get his way. ÒIÕll see you a

Chapter 46

Celia woke to a weird buzzing sound coming from somewhere in the room. She was still so out of it that she couldnÕt quite recognize the sound, and it took her a second to remember where she was and why it was that her body felt like her bones had melted. She cracked one eye open and looked over at the naked chest beside her as it rose and fell with each breath. AhÉit all came rushing back to her now, and as soon as her mind cleared, her body decided to give up all the aches and pains itÕd been numb to while she slept. Between her thighs felt like sheÕd been hit by a battering ram over and over again, but it was the ache deep inside that she knew was going to be trouble. She looked back over her shoulder at the bruises there and rubbed a finger over the sting in her neck. Had the very handsome laid back man next to her really turned into the beast that had fucked her all night into the wee hours of the morning? Her stupid body betrayed her by getting wet at her thou

Chapter 47

ÒI think we need to think about this; this is a pretty big step.ÓÒOkay!Ó She was a little put out by his easy capitulation but knew it would be the epitome of stupid to make a big deal out of it when she was the one who said no. Still, how could he give in so easily, did he no longer care? Her mind was filled with the worry that now that heÕd gotten what he wanted out of her, he was ready to drop her by the wayside. But why ask her to move in if that was the case? What if IÕd said yes? She thought. ÒThat mind of yours is going to get you into trouble.Ó Riley lifted her chin and studied her eyes. He wondered if she knew they gave her thoughts away, how transparent she was to him at least. He stood up in the tub and stepped out before turning back for her and lifting her out. He grabbed a towel from the warming bar and ran it briskly over her skin before drying himself off just as quickly. Dropping the towel on the floor for his housekeeper to pick up later, he to

Chapter 48

Celia barely made it out of the farmhouse without having to have breakfast first. ÒRiley, I really have to go.Ó She kept looking at the housekeeper who had a sour look on her face. He didnÕt seem to care as he had his arms around her, his hands locked over her ass. ÒYou canÕt work on an empty stomach, baby.Ó Her heart jumped when he called her that, and she got all soft and melting. But as she found herself being drawn in, she pulled back; the man is lethal. ÒIÕll grab something on the way in; I really have to go.Ó She wouldnÕt say he pouted, but he didnÕt look too pleased. She guessed she could understand where he was coming from this was supposed to be her day off after all, and it wouldÕve been the first theyÕd spent together. ÒBesides, I need to take care of your sore pussy. I saw the way you walked down those stairs.Ó Her face went up in flames, and she took a quick look at the housekeeper to make sure the other woman hadnÕt heard even though heÕd whispered i

Chapter 49

There wasnÕt much that could be done until they got word back from the M.E., so Detective Sparks and Officer Bailey spent the next few hours combing through the victimÕs life for the past few years. It wouldÕve been much simpler if the two men in the womanÕs life werenÕt so obviously innocent Celia thought as she interviewed them one after the other. But she didnÕt see either of them for the job unless one of them was a very good actor. She was even more bewildered when she spoke to them both together. The way the husband would look to his wifeÕs lover to answer a question he didnÕt know the answer to left Celia thinking that there was more to the relationship between the three people than the town gossips knew. Like, maybe theyÕd had some kind of relationship the three of them together, or the husband was one of those men who came to terms with such things for the sake of holding onto the woman he loved. And there was no mistake about it Gil Sherry had loved his wife.

Chapter 50

Celia felt the warmth in her tummy and the little blip in her heart when she saw him come to the door to greet her before sheÕd even turned the car off. She tried keeping the sappy smile off her face but failed miserably as she climbed out of the car and made her way towards him. Riley lounged in the doorway with his shoulder propped against the jamb and watched her coming towards him. Sometimes, like now, he realizes just how fucking gorgeous she is, and it gets him in the gut each and every time. The thing that he likes most about it is that she doesnÕt seem to know. Celia felt gauche and unsure of herself as she reached him and stood there, not knowing what to do with herself. Give her a dead body, and sheÕs right at home in her element. But having a man look at her like that, especially this man, the one sheÕs been crushing on since moving to the little town, and sheÕs all thumbs and stumbling feet. Right now, she couldnÕt even seem to find her tongue. Riley sn
