Chapter 71

It was done. Fann watched as all three men were tossed from the cliff into the pounding waters of high tide. Apparently the three who were rallying all the others. Uilleam and Callum both agreed that with these three gone it was likely most of the others would leave without much fight. He turned back towards the woods and passed his dirk to Will with a nod. He was about to continue down the corridor when something about the boy’s stance made him pause for a better look. The boy looked nervous and wouldn’t meet Fann’s eye. He was not new to life with the mercenaries, the death and blood should no longer bother him much. It had not on the last attack.“Is aught amiss, Will?” The boy bobbed his head yes, and his mouth opened, but no words came out.“Be ye injured?”“Nay M’Laird” his voice was uncharacteristically quiet.“Be ye ill?”“Nay M’Laird.”“Speak your mind, Will. I lose patience with ye.”“Some say I must tell ye now, some say I must no tell ye until later. I ken not who is rig

Chapter 72

Fan paced the hallway trying to calm himself. He wanted to go in to see his wife, but he would have to be calm. His frustration would only make her cry more.It had taken two days to purge the castle of foes. Old friends had become enemies, and new friends had come to help them. With the men Padraig MacInnis and the king’s emissary had sent and making good use of the holes in the walls, they had tracked down or chased off all those who were not happy to be part of the clan as the king wished it to be. But it was not a happy victory. He had secured their home, but many had died. Then, when he should have finally been able to relax in his home and find peace, his wife refused to sleep in their bedchamber! Refused to even enter it! She either would not, or could not, tell him why! When he had gotten frustrated with her, she'd started crying and could not stop.Old Mary had suggested taking her to her old bedroom instead of that room, and that is where she was yet. The bed was only just b

Chapter 73

A few weeks later, the sun peeked up over the ocean, dusting the water with yellow as it made its daily climb across the water and into the sky. Its rays filtered through the fog, bathing the cliff where Fann and Eleanor sat in the glow of the morning. “You should go soon then,” Eleanor said as she looked out to see, “travelling in the cold with all those animals would be awful. They should be settled in their new homes before there is a risk of snow.”“I do not want to leave you here alone. It is too soon.” She closed her eyes and took a deep breath.“If it is what is best for the clan, you should go.”“The clan be dammed,” Fann cursed, taking her chin in his hand and turning her to look at him. “You are my first priority. I will do what is right for you, then what is right for the clan. They are catching fish and hunting well now and with the women working together to salt and smoke we will have plenty for winter. Nobody will starve.”“Does Paddy really want to care for all those a

Chapter 74

The swaying rhythm of the horse’s steps, the steady beat of Fann’s heart, and the scent of the sea had become such a part of her time with Fann that Eleanor felt more at home here than she ever had, anywhere that she could remember. They could just as easily be back in England, newlywed and heading north. Which in a way, they were. It was amazing to look back on all that had come to pass and realize how little time they had been together. They had met late spring, hand fasted just in time for summer, separated for the peak of that season, and were now heading North again in early autumn. Was she still the same girl who she had been in the abbey? She certainly wasn’t as naive, and at the same time not as cynical. She certainly felt better about her marriage than she had ever thought she would. Her time with Fann, both in his bed and out of it, was not something that she simply had to endure. She enjoyed getting to know him and being with him.“You are not sleeping, wife. Do not try to

Chapter 75

The autumn market on Stuart land was really something to behold. In all his travels Fann had not seen the like outside of the more permanent market squares of large cities. Banners and flags were everywhere. There were stalls with everything a person could possibly need. He was glad he had listened to Alasdair and here first. It was likely they would not need to find any others. From here they could go to Padraig’s place and pick up the animals the emissary had left there for him and be home several days sooner than expected. He was so busy looking around as they made their way to the place they had chosen to tie up their horses that he didn’t notice Eleanor moving Beck up close beside him until she spoke.“Will you take me on your horse, Fann?” His eyes widened in surprise at the paleness of her skin peeking out from under the hood she had drawn over her. She shivered under it, despite the warmth of the afternoon sun. She had been so content during their travels so far. With all the

Chapter 76

In the two days since their arrival, Fann and Eleanor had both purchased almost everything they had hoped to buy for their clan. They hadn’t found a falcon that was well enough trained for a beginner, nor the grey kitten, but they were fairly certain the MacInnis brothers would be able to help with those when they passed by there. Winter could still have its problems, but if they arrived on MacDonald clans without being robbed, they shouldn’t lack food and would be doing well enough come spring, if the weather cooperated. The prince had introduced Eleanor to some of her cousins over tea at the castle shortly after their arrival. All were small and looked a bit like her, but most seemed more biddable, like Eliana. It grated on Eleanor’s nerves at times, but she was happy to become acquainted with some of her mother’s family. He watched the small group of women head off to watch the races. Thomas followed behind them at a small distance to keep an eye on Eleanor without being intrusive

Chapter 77

Fann used his foot to slam the door shut behind him as he took Eleanor from his shoulder, putting her on her feet an arms length in front of him so quickly that she stumbled back a couple steps before regaining her footing. She flipped her hair out of her face and looked up at him with her hands going to her middle making him worry that he had re injured her ribs. Again. Their eyes caught. He relaxed slightly when he saw no significant pain or tear filled eyes shinning back at him. He took a deep breath, relieved that he had likely only winded her. Looking at her the way he was, Fann saw the change in her expression the moment she realized he was more relieved and aroused than angry. Her chin dipped and a gentle smile curved her lips as her blue eyes blinked up at him through her long lashes. “I don’t know what I want to do to you more at this moment, mo Leannan.”“What are my options, husband?” “I want to beat some sense into you! You were so foolish and reckless!” His brows drew t

Chapter 78

Eleanor took a big gulp of wine and swallowed. Then she drew her lip between her teeth and looked around the MacInnis family’s great hall. They had arrived just in time for the start of the autumn equinox celebrations. The room smelled lovely, scented by the drying herbs and it looked very festive with garlands hanging from the rafters and everyone dressed in their finest clothing. Everyone was so merry that she could feel the happiness seeping into her, despite all the people in the room. She startled a bit when the cheers went up as the kitchen staff came in all at once, a line of people carrying platters of meats to the head table. Eleanor felt herself shiver and steeled her spine so she wouldn’t try to slink back out of sight. Some people were looking at her, but not a whole lot of them. Most were looking at the meat, or at Paddy and Eliana to see which platters they chose to eat from. No more than normal were looking at her...were there? Her hand came up to fiddle with the choker

Chapter 79

The bonfire glowed brightly, casting light and heat over everyone in the yard. Lively music was being played and everyone, young and old, was dancing around. She grinned as Fann spun her around, her feet lifting off the ground. They were both laughing by the time her feet hit the ground again. Eleanor couldn’t remember ever having so much fun! Did MacDonald clan never have these parties? There were certainly plenty of children about, so if they had partied like this when she was small surely she would remember it. If it wasn’t something they did, she and Fann would have to start the tradition. It was too good a celebration not to! Their new clan would need to have fairs like the Stuart clan, but the girls could compete just the same as the boys, though perhaps not against them. Different events for lads and lasses as well as for women and men! And then a feast and a party with a big fire, music, dancing... Perhaps they could even do this often! The solstice, maybe another for Christm

Chapter 80

“You will ride Beck, Eleanor. Storm is staying here.” She glanced around to be sure they were alone before she said, “but Fann-”“No. It is not up for debate. We will be travelling in a large group so there is little chance of attack and no need for his speed. I don’t know how he will react with all those other animals around, not to mention the men and dogs corralling them. I don’t want to put anyone at greater risk in what could very well already be a bit chaotic. Not you, not our clansmen, not even this blasted beast. Beck is sure-footed, calm and used to a wide assortment of creatures. Storm is going to stay here and we will return for him on another trip or Paddy can bring him when he and Lia come to visit.” She sighed and dug a few more carrots from her satchel to feed to him. “Do not try to disobey me on this.”“I won’t,” she said as she stroked the horse and stepped out of his stall, “you are right. He will not be happy with all the men shouting and cracking whips. He will be
