Blood Loss II

"We all have been unhappy," Amia pointed out as she firmly pushed Zande to a sitting position. "How could what Clent did to me, to all of us, leave us unchanged? But Dedari will not desert us. He would never do such a thing, not even in the guise of a carelessly received wound." "Do you think he was careless then?" That frightened Zande even more. If Dedari had been careless, it meant her fears were closer to the mark than ever. "Take my blood, Zande. It is freely offered to you and Dedari. I hope that it provides both of you with strength and peace," Amia replied softly. She opened her wrist with one sharp nail and held it to Zande's mouth. "For Dedari, if not for yourself." Zande fed, then leaned down to her brother, whispering softly into his ear. "Take from me what is freely offered, brother, what you need. Take it for yourself and for all of us who depend so heavily on you. I offer up my life that you might live." "Zande!" Amia protested sharply. "Dedari might not know wha

Blood Loss III

Zande knelt on the bed at the back of the bus and stared out at the scene of dwindling chaos. Ambulances and police cars were pulling away, the crowd was beginning to disperse. She hadn't thought to ask Dedari if any of their attackers had escaped. Knowing him, she doubted it, but he might have been so concerned with her, Prest, and Rich that he had allowed some of those guilty to escape his particular brand of justice. Amia drove the bus with surprising expertise, and Zane kept her eyes glued behind them, watching for any lights trailing the vehicle. Suddenly her heart was in her throat, pounding in alarm. For some reason she didn't want to leave the bar. She felt she was leaving behind her destiny. She needed to be where he could find her. He? Zande gasped and sank back onto the bed. "What is it?" Amia demanded, looking into the rearview mirror. She could hear Zande's increased heartbeat, her sudden gasp of alarm. The blood was pumping through her veins far too fast. She couldn't

Blood Loss IV

Zande rubbed her forehead with the heels of her hands. Whoever he was, he would come for her, and she had to decide what to do. She could never leave her family. Especially not now, when Dedari was having such a hard time with his own darkness. "Oh, God," she murmured aloud. "What am I thinking?" "You are in pain?"Zande's head snapped up, and she looked around the bus cautiously. The voice was clear, arrogant, a velvet purr. Not Dedari. Her throat closed convulsively, making it nearly impossible to breathe. She felt a strength, a male's touch, his heart beating steadily, his lungs working easily, in and out, regulating her breathing as if they were one being. His voice was beautiful, and reached something deep in her soul. Yet he was using a mental path unfamiliar to her. The experience unnerved her. "Go away." She tried the path he was using. She heard soft laughter, taunting male amusement. "I do not think so, piccola. Answer me. Are you in pain?"Zande glanced around guiltil

A Secret Door II

Olivera's POV: I literally balked as the walls parted like the red sea in front of the legendary Moses. My heart beat increased as I noted the locked door which the parted walls had made visible and touchable to me.A secret door? Did the Alpha know about this? I wondered, unable to stop my legs from moving forward. I knew I should mind my own business, find the trick area on the wall so that I could lock back the walls, but my curiosity got the better of me.I will just take a peek, and walk away. I thought. Nobody will find out about it.The closer I got to the door, the higher and faster my heartbeat went. I took a deep breath to calm myself down before I escaped with a heart attack out of the room. The knob was so cold,... like it should be, silly. I mumbled to myself. I turned the knob but it didn't even shake or budge.Another secret lock somewhere? I mused, taking in the strange features of the black iron door. It had some drawings on it, more like carvings, and some funny sy

A Secret Door III

I picked the enthralling ring from the table. For some reason, it beckoned onto me, and though I couldn't fathom why, I couldn't stop myself from taking it up and admiring it whole. It was a simple ring, except for the small glittering red orb at its center. A more detailed look at it, I noticed that it had some strange cravings in its inner circle. What's with all these and strange writings? None was even scribbled in English. I thought, shaking my head. These foreign entities were already giving me a headache. I should probably visit the library. Surely, there must be a book in written in English over there. I cocked my head to one side, after turning my back to the table, taking a look at the carelessly strewn papers on the table. Some were filled with drawings, others with the same writings in some language I had no idea of.Hmm. I sighed, dropping the ring back on the table. I was thinking on getting to the library when the board caught my attention next, and I walked to it, g

A Dream

Author's POV: A Dream(in the present tense)The night was black, the moon and stars blotted out by ominous swirling clouds gathering overhead. Threads of shiny black obsidian spun and whirled in a kind of fury, yet the wind was still. Small animals huddled in their dens, beneath rocks and fallen logs, scenting the mood of the land. Mists floated eerily out of the forest, clinging to the tree trunks so that they seemed to rise up out of the fog. Long, wide bands of shimmering white. Swirling prisms of glittering opaque colors. Gliding across the sky, weaving in and out of the overhead canopy, a large owl circled the great stone house built into the high cliffs. A second owl, then a third appeared, silently making lazy circles above the branches and the rambling house. A lone wolf, quite large, with a shaggy black coat and glittering eyes, loped out of the trees into the clearing. Out of the darkness, on the balcony of the rock house, a figure gilded forward, looking out into the nigh

Captive

At another place, the same time:There was blood, a river of it running. There was pain, a sea he was floating in. Would it never end? A thousand cuts, burns, the taunting laughter telling him it would go on for all eternity. He could not believe he was so helpless, could not believe his incredible power and strength had been drained from him, leaving him reduced to such a pitiful state. He sent mental call after call out into the night; none of his kind came to help him. The agony continued, went on relentlessly. Where were they? His kin? His friends? Why wouldn't they come to him and end this? Had it been a conspiracy? Had they deliberately left him to these butchers who wielded their knives and torches with such delight? It had been someone he knew who had betrayed him, but the memory was curiously fading, obscured by endless pain. His tormentors had somehow managed to capture him, paralyze him so that he could feel yet not move, not even his vocal cords. He was totally helpless, v

The women. He recognized them, knew they were out there, alive, no manacles, not buried beneath the earth but able to move freely around. Especially the one that resembled him. Captive III

The captive, Zendedari later slept for a long time, determined to renew his strength. He woke only to feed briefly, to assure himself that she was alive and nearby. He contained his elation so that he would lose no more blood. He needed his strength now. She was so close, he could feel her. She was within a few miles of him. Twice he "saw" her cabin through her eyes. She was fixing it up, doing the things women did to make a rundown shelter a home. Later, he began to awaken at regular intervals, testing his strength, drawing animals to him to give him much-needed blood. He haunted her dreams, called her continually, kept her awake when her body desperately needed sleep. She was already fragile, half-starved, weak from lack of feeding. She worked day and night, her mind filled with problems and solutions. He ignored all that to keep at her so that she would be so tired, he could easily hold her under compulsion to do his bidding. He was patient. He had learned patience. He knew he was

Captive IV

She suddenly caught the scent of a rabbit, and her body stilled. She could hear its heartbeat, feel its fear. The animal sensed danger, a predator stalking it. A fox; she caught the whisper of fur sliding through the underbrush. It was wonderful to hear, to feel things, to not be afraid of hearing things others couldn't. Bats wheeled and dipped, diving at insects, and She raised her face to the heavens, watching their antics, taking pleasure in the simple show. She began to walk again, needing the exercise, needing to put the weight of responsibility from her shoulders for a time. She had found her cottage, the barest bones of a home, and over the last few months had turned it into a sanctuary. Shutters blocked out the sunlight during the day. A generator provided the lights and necessary power for her computer. A modern bathroom and kitchen had been the next priority. Slowly She had acquired books, supplies, and everything needed for the emergency care of patients. Though She hoped n
