Chapter 31

The guard turns the iron key and unlocks the heavy wooden door. The hinges protest in a loud squeaking noise as he opens the door and pushes Rebecca into the small cold space.Rebecca ignores the guard's crude manner. All she wants is to hold and comfort her son. Over by the window, stands a man looking out into the night. He is tall, muscular and striking with short blonde hair and noticeably pale complexion. Rebecca looks around to find Joar, but she can't see him.“Joar, where are you? Mummy’s here." She doesn't get an answer, so she turns to the guard. "Where's my son? You were supposed to put me in the same prison cell as my son."The guard laughs coldly, shakes his head and slams the door behind him. Rebecca runs towards the door, bangs hard on the wooden boards and screams, "Take me to my son!" But she doesn't get an answer, so instead she turns to the man standing by the window. Dusk is upon them as the rain pours down over the camp site, turning the only source of heat into a sluggish pile of dark gray ash. Vimar tries in a furious effort to stop the water from flooding their sleeping quarter, but he has no chance against the forces of nature.The rain splashes down over Indra's face. Her fingers are freezing and slow moving from the intense cold. She doesn't know what the next obstacle might be, but right now she's too exhausted to care. The air leaves King Laurin's body. He tries to call for help but no sound can get past the water filling his mouth. All he hears is his own gurgled cries for help, echoing in his ears.When he lets himself fall through Charot's frozen lake, he ended up in a river’s raging rapids. Millions of gallons of water push him under the surface and keep him there. The struggle for survival has begun and he is being dragged down, deeper and deeper. His body hits sharp rocks in the turbulent waters that tear up large flesh wounds along his legs, staining the water red around him. He tries to grab on to anything, but everything flashes by at breakneck speed and his fingers can't hold on. He's got to get up. Cain bolts out from between the trees, in the direction of Indra. She has time to spot his dark eyebrows, straight nose and sparkling hazel brown eyes. His shiny copper armor that sits like a perfect mold over his well define muscles, sends the clear message of power. She even has time to see the scar that runs across his jaw down to his mouth and glows pale white on his tanned skin.But she still doesn't have time to parry his attack. Out of nowhere, he shows up and throws himself at her like a predator attacking his prey. They tumble on the hard ground, which is wet after the night's rain. Cain pushes her down on her back, wraps his strong hands around her wrists and pin them down into the damp soil. The sun is high in the sky. Indra moves her pack from one shoulder to the other when the straps begin to cut into her skin. Her clothes are soaked from the sweat flowing freely from her scalp down her back and front, gluing the fabric to her body.They're getting closer to the mountains. The hilly landscape with uneven and rugged terrain mean that they have to concentrate on every step they take. Everywhere, small saplings grow like a tangled net, and areas of spongy mats of peat makes it difficult to walk without sinking into the damp surface.Indra gestures to the others. The sun is burning its way down, coloring the sky in vibrant shades of pink and orange. They've been walking all day in the soaring heat. They have run out of water and food and they have to replenish their supplies.Cain walks a bit in front of the others, with the Siberian Jay on his shoulder. The little bird chirps loudly, as if to say something. Cain gets annoyed by the continuous sound and shoos away the bird that flies and sits on Brage's shoulder instead. She jumps back and forth across his shoulder and her tiny head bobs up and down as she chirps. Eventually, the Siberian Jay uses her beak to pull hard on a lock in Brage's hair."Ow! What are you doing?" Siberia takes off into the air, orbits them and eventually lands on Indra's outstretched arm. "It seems like she wants to tell us something." Indra caresses with her finger over the bird's chest and Siberia calms down. "What do you want to show us?"She raises her hand and the little bird leaves her arm.

It hurts. Indra screams inside her head. Its agony to breathe; her stomach turns and she vomits water out of her lungs that burns like they're on fire.Someone pats her hard in the back and more water comes up. Her chest starts to rise and fall. It is refreshing to fill the body with oxygen and with that present time appears in waves around her. She hears the sound of the babbling water and upset voices going from hushed mumbling to loud clear words.The first thing she records when she opens her eyes is Vimar's anguished screams. She is helped to sit up and sees Vimar sitting with Brage in his arms. He cries and prays to higher powers to return his beloved, rocking back and forth as he’s showering him with kisses over his pale face.
