Waiting out the storm

"Excuse me?", she asked, her eyes wide.He sighed impatiently, "You're soaked, you need to get out of those clothes before you catch a cold""But I have nothing else to wear", she protested. "There's some blankets here that we can use", he replied, gesturing to a large wooden trunk beside him. She looked at him, uncertainty in her eyes, as a draft blew through the cave making her shiver."Just change out of your clothes over there while I start a fire", he said, waving his hand in the general direction of the trunk as he crouched down and began lighting a fire. The cold was seeping into her bones and she grit her teeth to stop them chattering as she rushed to the trunk behind him and began taking off her clothes before quickly pulling a blanket around her. She stood behind him, quietly watching as he started a fire and patiently tended it, leaving her wondering how he could stand the cold. "Could you pass me a

Midnight Rendezvous

It was late when they eventually returned to the mansion and Merlin went straight to her room to bathe and put on some clothes. She had dinner alone in her room before retiring to bed but, unable to sleep, she decided to go back to the library and find the book. The mansion was quiet, everyone having already retired for the night as she made her way downstairs and through the long corridor to the library. Pushing through the heavy wooden doors, she found the library bathed in the soft glow from the moonlight streaming through the French windows that bordered one side of the room. Reaching to turn on the lights, she thought better of it, not wanting to alert anyone seeing the lights on and come to check. Moving quietly to the back of the room, she quickly located the shelf where she had first seen the book. She scanned the books on the shelf but couldn't seem to find the one she was looking for. She paused, trying to remember if this was where she found it,

The Witch's Powers

"Through the kitchen and down the hall, on your right, there is a guest room, which is where you will stay while you are here. I will have your things from the second floor brought up in the morning. I expect that you will have an alternative course of action for me within the next twenty four hours since your recent endeavor to retrieve the book has proven fruitless. ", his voice, like his face, was blank, devoid of any emotion and not waiting for a response, he turned and walked into his bedroom. Merlin felt the tears, stinging her eyes, feeling somehow that maybe she deserved this for allowing herself to believe that she could ever be more to him than what she was. They had a deal and that was all it was to him, she felt so incredibly stupid that she had even dared to hope that he had genuinely cared for her. She was just an asset that he needed to protect until she had served her purpose, that's all it was and all it ever would be. The facts were crysta

Aunt May

Merlin blinked slowly, her mind trying to catch up with what her ears just heard, she thought maybe Zeke was teasing her again but the look on his face told her otherwise. "I....I couldn't......you don't know that it was me", she stammered. "I was there Merlin", he stated simply. Her hands were clutching at her shirt and he could see her trembling as her eyes darted nervously around the room. He could hear her breathing becoming shallow and erratic, her heart beating too fast. "Merlin", he called, "Merlin, look at me"She didn't seem to hear him so he called her name again but louder this time. "Merlin! I said look at me! Finally she looked at him and he spoke to her in a soft, firm voice, "You need to calm down and control it, don't let it control you. Do you understand?"The blank look in her eyes faded as she focused on his face and voice and she nodded imperceptibly. "I think

Who are "They"?

The door slammed shut with a resounding  thud, leaving her alone, as she heard the sound of the Alpha's car driving away and breathed a sigh of relief. Behind her, the back door in the kitchen opened and the sound of footsteps echoed through the empty house. The hairs on the back of her neck bristled as a cold draught accompanied the footsteps and she knew who it was, even before she turned to look into his dead, black eyes. The man standing in her kitchen, was rangy and almost seven feet tall but his slender frame hid a strength that she knew all too well. She had been younger and afraid then but not today, today she was fearless, fearless because she had nothing left to lose. He smiled then as if reading her thoughts, a humorless smile, his startlingly white teeth incongruous against his smooth, ebony complexion. "Maybelline", he said, his mouth and tongue caressing her name like some clandestine lover from her youth. "Obeah!", she spat

Lightning Crashes

Merlin knew that she should resist, knew it with every fiber of her being but she needed this, she needed him. She had just lost the only family she had ever had and she was completely alone now. Without Aunt May, there was no one left for her, she probably didn't even have a home to go back to once this was over, whatever the hell this was. She felt like she was suffocating, she couldn't breathe, she wanted to be anywhere but here.  Merlin pushed him away and wrenched the door open, almost falling out of the car as she stumbled and righted herself before taking off, running into the forest. It was dark in the forest, the tree canopy, preventing the moonlight from reaching the ground below. She ran blindly, the undergrowth like skeletal fingers, reaching out to drag her down, their sharp claws, scratching at her face and arms, drawing blood.  In front of her, a flash of lightning briefly illuminated a path through the trees with a

Don't overthink it

They were found a short time later, by a search party, led by Abel, after Zeke’s vehicle had been found abandoned by the side of the road.  Zeke’s wolf had put him into an almost comatose state during the night, in order to heal him, and he had fully recovered by the time they reached the mansion. Dr Lesley came by later that morning to examine Zeke and Merlin, finding them both to be in good health, but ordered that they rest for the next day or two. Zeke slept fitfully for most of the day while Merlin stayed by his side, anxiously watching over him, just to be sure that he really had recovered. When he woke in the middle of the afternoon, he found her asleep in a chair beside his bed, her head resting on the mattress. He smoothed her hair back from her face, gently tracing her cheekbone, watching as her lashes fluttered delicately against her skin. He wondered what she was dreaming about and hoped that it was a good dream, with a happy ending because

It's Complicated

"It's complicated", Merlin replied softly. "Let's get cleaned up and get out of here, you can tell me all about it over dinner",  he said, smiling reassuringly. Later that evening, after dinner, as they sat outside on the balcony, watching the sunset, Zeke turned to look at her, a questioning look on his face. "What did Aunt May say to you that day?"Merlin hesitated, running her tongue over her lips as she stared out at the forest, trying to gather her thoughts and arrange them into some sort of order. Zeke waited patiently, reaching out to take her hand in his and  running his thumb over her knuckles. When she eventually spoke, her voice was soft and halting and filled with so many different emotions. "She said, trust no one but the Alpha, his destiny is tied to yours" A strange, but not uncomfortable, silence settled over them as they became lost in their own thoughts, while above them, the moon and

Juliette

The next day, Zeke took Merlin to the mansion infirmary, she had no idea why they were here and he had made no effort to explain. Following him through the examination/treatment room, they entered a small room in the back. Walking through the door, Merlin found herself face to face with the dark-haired witch who had almost killed her in the library. Her eyes widened in shock as she staggered backwards, her hands reaching for the door before Zeke’s voice stopped her cold. "Merlin, this is Juliette and she's going to teach you to use your powers""I will do no such thing!", Juliette spat, even before Merlin could voice her disagreement. "You will do exactly as I say if you wish to continue to remain here, safe and alive", Zeke countered, glancing at her sharply. "This! This is the person you want to teach me?! She almost killed me!", Merlin exclaimed angrily. "And I would have, if you hadn't stolen my magic!", Juliette y

Practice makes perfect

After her first day of training, Merlin returned to the third floor that evening, to find that Zeke had left for a series of meetings with the neighboring packs and would return at the end of the week. She was, in fact, quietly relieved as this would enable her to focus on her training so she could be ready when he got back. With each passing day, Merlin’s magical abilities improved, along with her confidence, under Juliette's unorthodox tutelage. The two witches had formed a friendship of sorts and a peculiar bond that, under different circumstances, might never have been forged. They were frequently seen either arguing loudly or doubled over in fits of unrestrained laughter, completely oblivious to the stares from passing werewolves. For the most part, their training sessions were uninterrupted, the werewolves steering clear of them, due to the long-standing feud between witches and werewolves. As the end of the week approached, Juliette prepared Merlin f
