Chapter 10 - Things get hot, then awkward

I asked Lukas with a grin, “Are you ready for round two?” I had secured my hand wrappings and was eager to change my mind with our sparring session.Unfortunately, Lukas didn’t seem to share my excitement. He frowned and responded, “I’d love that, but that’s not what I had in mind.” His beautiful amber eyes were hidden beneath thick black lashes, and his long curly hair fell on his face. I resisted the urge to come closer and remove the strands from his face.I slightly jumped in place and made small circles with my wrists to warm up. I needed to think of something else.Lukas continued, “I was hoping we could go out and grab a bite to eat. Since you didn’t tell me where you lived, I thought it best to meet here.”Lukas was dressed casually and wasn’t prepared for a fight. He wore dark-washed jeans over his construction boots and a white T-shirt underneath a black jacket. My heart screamed, “Yes! Yes!” but I had to force other words out. “I’m sorry, but I’ve had a rough day today. I wo

Chapter 11 - Dead man's tale

I skillfully picked the lock to Umbridge’s apartment and managed to slip inside without disturbing the red police tape wrapped around the door. Once inside, I made sure to lock the door behind me and tip-toed around the few remaining markers on the floor, trying my best to leave no trace of my presence. As I explored the apartment, I was overcome with a feeling of frustration and exhaustion. The night with Lukas had been a disaster, and I barely managed to get any sleep at all. I had woken up at sunrise and taken a cold shower before heading to Moe’s to obtain the Michael Umbridge file. With the file in hand, I had come straight to Umbridge’s home to investigate. However, my hopes were soon crushed. Everything appeared to have already been thoroughly searched and investigated. Every possible piece of evidence, including the trash cans, had been removed, leaving me with nothing to work with.I summarized the pool of dried blood that stained the floor had been where Umbridge died. It was

Chapter 12 - What the...?

I pressed the intercom button at the police precinct and waited for the robotic-sounding voice to respond. When it did, I presented myself and stated that I had another skip for processing, and the person on the other end sent two police officers to take the perp off my hands.I decided to lie low after my completely illegal investigation of the Umbridge case a few days ago, and I hadn’t seen or heard from Lukas in days. The feeling I had was the same as when you give your phone number to some cute guy with a promise of a call, and he never does. It was irritating and humiliating, even more so since I had jumped on him and savagely made out with his face. The back door to the precinct opened, and police officer Dan came down. He always came when he knew I was bringing someone in. However, the look he gave me when we met sent chills down my spine. If a look could kill, I’d already be dead and buried six feet under.“What crawled up your asshole today?” I muttered to Dan while handing hi

Chapter 13 - Fyre

I walked into Mortimer’s Bail Bonds and collapsed into the seat in front of Bea. She glanced at me from under her lashes, then stopped typing and pushed her glasses up her nose with her index finger.“Already done?”I handed her a small stack of bail bond paperwork, and she quickly reviewed it, entering all the information into the computer system. But when she reached the last case, she gave me a stern look.“Four? You’ve caught four skips in one week? Honey, maybe it’s time to take a break,” Bea said, her eyes filled with concern.I waved my hand dismissively. “It’s nothing. I’m just trying to keep myself busy. This is an excellent distraction.”Bea’s eyes softened, but she still looked worried. She and Moe always knew I liked to keep myself occupied, but maybe I had gone a little too far this time. I had been chasing and handcuffing people non-stop, barely taking the time to eat or sleep. It was a wonder I hadn’t started smoking cigarettes with all the stress I was putting myself un

Chapter 14 - Not so friendly competition

Jace POVThe night was starting on a high note, and I was elated by the turnout at the opening of my new vampire nightclub. The club was designed to cater to the needs of the vampire community in the city, providing them with a safe and secure environment where they could socialize, conduct business, and have fun with their pets outside of business hours.I wanted to create a space that would not only serve their needs but also promote peaceful coexistence between vampires and humans. This club would also serve as a distributor for the synthetic blood created by the Harrington and Leigh Corporation, known as V Blood, which was a game-changer for the community. The launch of V Blood was the highlight of the century, and the Harrington and Leigh Corporation hoped that it would put an end to vampires robbing hospitals or killing humans needlessly to obtain the blood they so desperately needed to survive. Synthetic blood was a revolutionary product that would enable us to coexist with huma

Chapter 15 - Noctua

I gradually woke up, and my head throbbed mercilessly. I opened one eye and noticed a glass of water sitting next to two pills and a note, which seemed to have been placed there with care. I groaned and turned away from the intrusive light, shielding my face with a pillow. Suddenly, a wave of memories from the previous night crashed over me, leaving me feeling disoriented and vulnerable. I recalled seeing Lukas and drinking a copious amount of whiskey to numb the pain that still lingered from our last encounter. I had hoped to make him jealous if he was watching. I faintly remembered possibly kissing Jace, but then everything went hazy, and I must have blacked out. After gathering my courage, I tossed the pillow aside and reached for the pills, my fingers trembling. I washed them down with the water, feeling the cool liquid soothing my parched throat. I then turned to the note, dreading what it might reveal about my behaviour the previous night. I hoped I hadn’t embarrassed myself too

Chapter 16 - Give me a chance

Lukas POVAfter the incident involving Max and me at the country cabin, I kept a close eye on her from a distance. I was angry for allowing things to escalate so quickly between us. I should have known better. Max needed time to understand and accept what I was.I had been hiding my true self from everyone in this city for years, and it was becoming increasingly difficult to keep up that façade. When Max and I were together in the cabin, things got heated, and I felt on the verge of revealing my true identity. But that dread of being rejected, or worse, feared, made me back away from her. If I hadn’t stopped, I would have marked Max, and she would have become mine per the werewolf bond. But Max deserved to have the choice, and I had no intention of forcing it on her without her consent. She was as drawn to me as I was to her, so that had to mean something; however, the choice would ultimately be hers. However, I’d need to tell her soon before Jace got the upper hand—if he didn’t alread

Chapter 17 - Things are getting weirder

As Jace’s name slipped from my mouth, I slapped my hand over my lips and backed away from Lukas with shock. Why the fuck had I said that? Why was I even thinking about him?I pulled the covers over me and thanked God that I hadn’t turned on the lights. At least in the darkness, I couldn’t see the destruction I had just inflicted on Lukas’s ego.Shit. Fuck. Fuck.“I…” I didn’t know what to say, and it mortified me.I had deep feelings for Lukas, and I hated myself for possibly obliterating my chances of ever seeing where these feelings could lead. There was no way to salvage this.Lukas repositioned himself on the side of the bed. I heard him exhale and pass a hand over his face.“It’s fine. Don’t worry about it,” he replied. “You must have a lot on your mind right now.”I couldn’t understand how calm he was about the whole thing. For reasons beyond my comprehension, I had just said another man’s name while having foreplay with someone else, and Lukas was acting as though nothing really

Chapter 18 - Following Umbridge's footsteps

I had no idea what was in store for me, and I dreaded what this mysterious Vic would show us. The building had several apartments above the Chinese restaurant, and I assumed they were probably similar to my bachelor pad—one room and a bathroom. They couldn’t be much bigger since the building was small. We walked down a dimly lit hallway until we stopped before a door marked 5B. I hesitated for a moment before knocking. Someone from within yelled to come in, so I opened the door. The room was shrouded in darkness, with only five computer monitors casting a faint glow. Vic’s equipment and setup were impressive and seemed to belong to a skilled hacker. The windows were painted black, blocking out any sunlight, and the walls were adorned with black soundproofing panels. I thought I would be greeted by a middle-aged man with mustard on his shirt, but surprisingly, “Vic” was a tiny woman wearing a chunky and elaborate gamer headset.“Ravenwood?” Vic asked with her back half-turned toward the

Chapter 19 - Taking a day off

I casually walked over to Bea’s desk and sat, waiting for her to return from the back office where she was likely looking through piles of documents. It was Monday morning, and usually, Monday mornings were slow and perfect for filing cases that were closed late the week before.Lukas was looking at the portraits in the waiting area and grumbled when I tried to shoo him outside.“Why do you keep asking me to leave? Are you shy about being seen with me?”“No… well, yes. But no. It’s just… they’re like family. They’ll start asking questions about you. Couldn’t you wait outside?” I asked as I got up and tried to push him out.Lukas chuckled, causing his chest to rumble, and he quickly sidestepped me, enveloping me in his massive arms.“If that’s the case, they’ll love me. I mean, look at me,” Lukas said, flashing me a perfect smile and then kissing my head. “What’s not to love?”I groaned but did nothing to stop him. I felt helpless in his strong arms, which, incidentally, I didn’t want t
