71: The rightness of belonging

“Mia!” he repeated, his fascination lingering in his deep voice. “It’s nice to meet you.” He stretched his hand out to her and when she took it; he brought it to his lips and placed a tender kiss on it.  Mia's skin crawled at the contact of his lips on her skin. She thought he would just shake her hand and she didn’t expect the kiss that followed. She knew at this point Xavier was red with anger, if not more, but he had to behave. They were in an open gathering and he couldn’t act out. This would get her into deep trouble, but she didn’t care. She wanted the trouble.  “The pleasure is mine,” she said, forcing on a smile.  The young server returned with her grape wine in a golden goblet and he handed it over to her. His eyes took notice of her and then Blake beside her before travelling to the back where the alpha king stood and his eyes displayed panic as if he was the one in trouble. Mia smiled at him, took the cup, nodded at B

72: The making of a monster

It wasn’t the first time Mia had slept in his room in the past months, but it was the first time he woke up and didn’t find her in his arms. He wanted to always wake up to her in his arms, sleeping soundly, mumbling sweet nothing. Then he would spend the first hour of waking, playing with her curly, coarse red hair. When she’d finally wake to stare at him with her adorable amber eyes kissed by the sun itself, he’d smile and greet her. Those routines got him ready for the day. Waking up without her didn’t feel right. It sucked, and he didn’t like it. He knew he’d have to let her go sooner than later and the very thought hurt him. He had suggested the one-year agreement to her without thinking about what it meant. Mia was a creature of beauty both inside and out and he didn’t realise it then. If he did, he would have made their agreement longer than a year. It would have been selfish, but he would have had more time holding onto her. This all would have been an easy fit if his feeli

73: Plans and problems

“How do I not know this?” Mia asked, climbing down the stairs of the balcony along with Edward. She lifted her long blue gown with her hands to help keep her graceful step while racing down. “You should know by now that your husband is just as secretive as the listeners he confines in, or worse, the cave shamans,” Edward replies. Edward had barged into her study a few minutes ago while she read throug the records or the maidens’ council. He asked her if she knew what today was and she told him it was the third day of the week and the fifteenth day of March. He then asked if she knew today was Xavier’s birthday, to which she replied no. Then he told her it was. Mia didn’t believe it at first. She had woken up in the alpha king’s bed today, but he didn’t inform her about his special day. If he did, she would have remembered instead of staring at Edward like an idiot when he broke the news to her. Edward spent most of his days with his father, the alpha of alphas, and went with him on

74: A good king loves his people

“Where are we going?” Xavier’s sceptical voice asked as the carriage drove him and Mia away from the Palace. Mia had stepped into his inner court and asked him out on a date. He had a lot to attend to, but she had never asked him out before and he couldn’t turn her down the first time she did. Besides, he wanted alone time with her as well. If he could get a week off his responsibilities, he’d take her off to the royal resort and spend every moment with her. For now, they made do with what they had. So he dropped everything and said yes.  There had been mischievousness in his little wife since they stepped into the carriage earlier. There was something she wasn’t telling him, and from the look of things, she planned a surprise for him. His heart skipped at the thought of what she planned out for them. Yet he didn’t know why she bothered.  He couldn’t tell her plans just by looking at her. She looked beautiful and radiant, as always. Today, she wore

75: Beyond abandon

His eyes lifted and locked on hers. His heartbeat increased and his body became alert at her closeness. He almost leaned in and kissed her lips, but he held himself back and glance down.  “I don’t think I’m a great king. I’m hardly a good one and many people have seen my dark side.”  “Many people might have seen your dark side, but I’ve seen the good side.” she leaned into him, tiptoeing so that her lips could meet his.  He kissed back immediately, his response desperate, and he pulled her closer to himself. This felt right, she felt right, more than anything else. Her soft lips tasted so sweet he could kiss her all day. He pulled back, panting after about a minute.  “We shouldn’t,” he cleared his throat, “we are out in the open.” “My king is conservative.” She teased. He chuckled and nod his head, “I don’t think you’d like to fuck me in the dirt while the horses watch.” he told her, glancing at the horses s

76: Finding reasons

Mia barely close her eyes that night. The memories of what happened burnt in her brain and with every blink of her lashes, she saw a flash of the horror that took place on the way back from the ranch. At this point, she was straining her eyes to keep them awake. It’s been three days and yet no sleep. How could she? When her husband the Alpha king turned into a monster out of nowhere and killed four travellers who came up to her asking for nothing more than just directions? If they had attacked her, he would have been defending her, but this wasn’t defending. This was a cruel attack, and for what? He didn’t get her to say I love you back. She felt sick in her stomach whenever she thought back to those men being ripped from limb to limb and their blood splashed all over the road, carriage and also on her. She felt filthy that night, filthier than she ever felt. It became a point of duty to scrub, washed and get their blood off her body. After hours of unending washing, she cleaned her

77: Assuming the worse

The door to Xavier’s chambers cracked open and a little light shone through, illuminating the darkness. Xavier’s angry eyes snapped open, and he ran off the bed to see who was intruding on him this time, and his eyes caught Mia. The anger he felt died as he saw the angelic creature he called his wife at his door. His hands ran over his face to wipe at it. An attempt to make himself look presentable to her. He hadn’t seen her in days and he had counted down till this moment and now he didn’t want her disappointed at what she saw. He had done a sloppy job of cleaning himself up. His robe clung to his body, shrunk terribly, and this was his worst look ever. He was still a mess, but she was here to see him, and that was all that mattered. The excitement he felt, however, was short-lived when he saw Edward step up beside her. Why were these two always together? Was he the reason she reacted so coldly to his profession? Was he the man she loved? Was that it? “Why a

78: Blinded reality

Xavier pull his hand away from Mia’s temple and she gasped and stumbled back from him. She stared at Xavier, her heart pounding loudly in her chest. She immediately felt remorseful having realised the truth, which she didn’t see. She had thought the worse of him these past few days when what he did was protect her from danger. He didn’t kill those men in cold blood as she had initially thought. He killed them because they were on a mission. A mission to kill her and she had thought they were commoners travelling who lost their ways, but she was wrong. She had also called Xavier a monster and a cold-hearted beast, and she was wrong as well. She was grateful Xavier saved her life and remorseful for thinking the very worse of him in return. He was hurt. She didn’t give him the benefit of a doubt, even after everything, and that hurt him. Her eyes were guilty as they stared at him. “Why didn’t you just tell me that day?” “I saw the way you looked at me and I realised you might never se

79: The inevitable fate

Xavier and Mia, along with Edward, made their way towards the courtroom where Edward had told them Robb and the councils of elders were. If Xavier said he wasn’t afraid, he would be lying. If he had the chance to go back to three days ago, he probably would have done the same thing: protect his wife and queen and kill those assassins. He didn’t want to think of those waiting for him, and he didn’t want to think of the things ahead. The door opened and Xavier and Mia stepped into the courtroom where Robb sat in the upper seat and the eight elders beside him. Standing beside Robb was Elliott, and the sight of him made Xavier furious. “Should he be here?” he rose a concerned brow. “I asked him to stay,” Robb replied, and a smirk appeared on Elliott’s face. “It’s good to finally see you after three days of visiting!” “I’m sorry, your grace, the past three days haven’t been the best.” “Guilt or something else?” Robb asked. “I have no reason to feel guilty, your grace!” he answered.

80: Until our last breath

Xavier sat at the table of his study, handing three royal scrolls to Valerio. He wanted him to personally deliver them to the supervisors of the Capital 3 project. The door opened and Edward, who had gone ahead to the temple earlier, stepped in and he approached him. Xavier nodded at Valerio and he took his leave and as the door closed, Xavier’s attention turned to Edward. He had gone ahead with four elders to confirm the information Xavier had given about the men he killed. Edward was to report whatever their findings were. “Any news?” “The bodies of those men which were supposed to be at the temple are missing,” Edward said, locking his hands behind his back. The council of Alphas, Robb Ainsworth, the queen, prince Edward and lord Elliot were the only ones that heard his remark about those he killed and he wanted to narrow down to who amongst them could have done this. His guts told him his enemy sat with them at the courtroom. He couldn’t ignore that feeling. He scoffed and ti
